I like the idea of wearing a cropped pullover sweater, it would cover up the top and look like a skirt/sweater outfit. But it has to be cropped just right, I think, so you don't lose your waist. You could experiment also with a fitted, cardigan (hitting no lower than high hip length), worn buttoned up. Heck, turn it around backwards so the buttons are in the back, just to be different. Think 1950s? With ballet flats? Or kitten heels?

Otherwise, my go-to for dressing down a dress is to pop on my F21 pleather cropped moto jacket in the fall/winter, or a jean jacket in the spring/summer. You could also try a boyfriend jacket.

Or just glam it up and go dressy, and accessorize with your hubby's big smile!

Thank you for your help everyone. I normally dress pretty casual so it would look a bit different. My husband got me this dress with the stipulation that I wear it for Christmas so I gotta! Oh well. I guess the best thing to do is just go in with confidence!

I was going to suggest a cardigan, but it would have to have a very high neckline to cover the neckline of the dress...unless you wore a scarf too.

You could also put a pullover on over the top of the dress.

Maybe add some patterned tights? Flats instead of heels?

I really like the dress, but an illusion neckline is really hard to dress down, IMO. Normally, tights and booties and a cardi will take any dress down a notch in terms of formality, but that's also much more difficult with a dress this colour. Hmm. I'm going to wait to see what others suggest, as I am stumped.

Then again, are they used to you dressing up? You might be overdressed, but if they are expecting it, then you can just wear the dress and relax, knowing that everyone understands that overdressing is just your style (this is true with me and my family).

So, like a lot of people, I'll be going to some holiday parties in the next couple days, and I really want to wear this lovely BCBG dress I received a little while ago. Only thing is, my families are always very casual people and I feel like if I wear it, I'll look way too dressed up compared to everyone else. Can anyone give me ideas on how to dress this down as best I can? I'm really bad at fashion pairings.

here's a couple links to pics:
