Joy, you made your own tights? How is that even possible? Knitting? Btw, I’m still hoping for a tutorial from you on turning a scarf into a kimono with a few knots.

Your dream outfit looks great. I remember wearing something similar in the 60 s and even made my own crazy tights from a pattern. My favorites were hot pink floral worn with a grey knit mini skirt and pink chunky sweater.
Angie, I really hope your holiday outfit comes together.

I love tights too, but like you I run cold so rarely bother with skirts in winter (or I wear them over jeans). But this year I’ve been using the tights under cropped pants, to add insulation and cover the ankle gap. With the right tights it can look similar to the “funky sock” trend.

FI, yes, when I thrift shop I bring a list. I go a lot because I do theater and film stuff, and am often putting together costumes for myself or others. Some tunnel vision helps. Target the racks in the appropriate size, and look for specific colour/fabric combos. Crisp white cotton, or velvet in the red family, etc. I think theater is to blame for my habit of visualizing entire outfits like this; it's a costume approach.

I might also be open to, say, a hunter green mini skirt paired with leopard-print tights and a black or amber-colored top. Them I'm working with tops I already have.

Etsy! Of course. Why didn’t I think of that?

But don’t you go to actual B&M thrift shops fairly often? There are tons of them, and I’ve never gotten the hang of them. Do you take a list when you thrift? How does that work?

Haha, FI, since posting this I carted three velvet/velour leopard mini skirts (probably all 90s vintage) on Etsy that might work, plus a couple of green chunky-knit sweaters. The trouble is, what I like about the Madewell skirt is that it's actually polka dots in leopard colours, not a literal leopard print. It is priced higher than I'd be willing to pay, but maybe if it gets marked down before my size sells out...

I’m sure you could look great in this, but not so sure you’ll find all the pieces in thrift stores. I know leopard print is trending, but has it been “in” long enough to reach thrift shops? If you’re going to look specifically for the fun, swishy skirt, that sounds doubly hard. But I don’t know your thrift shops.
I’m trying t remember the holiday capsule you put together last year, but I can’t.

Okay, Angie, challenge accepted! Outfits with tights, starting tomorrow.

Runcarla, I will definitely keep wearing my plaid pants, especially since I just updated my knitwear -- with trendy mustard no less! But I am someone who craves silhouette variety, and this one (chunky knit plus mini skirt) has grabbed my attention. So maybe it will be the next thing I play around with.

I've noticed the brand sites are ramping up the sparkly holiday items on the first pages of their sites. This is distracting me from researching for some of the more practical items I'm looking for. Grrrr! I like the sound of your 'go-to' outfits from the past - especially the plaid bottoms with dressy top. Tartan is still trending strong. Could you update this formula with a bit of western lite? Maybe a belt with a western buckle and comfy western boots (with wool socks to prevent cold feet!)

(The look below is kind of maximal, but interesting!)

Anne, I had a red and black plaid mini skirt in the late 90s/early 00s that I really loved as a tween/teen. Pretty sure I actually wore it with dark green tights for Christmas once or twice, so this is definitely within my wheelhouse.

Bijou, I do think all the pieces would have versatility outside of the holidays, especially the hunter green sweater. The leopard skirt would be the hardest to style for me, but I think I have enough solid black tops and black graphic tees that I could come up with easy combos that feel like me. I could even go full-on grunge and wear it with flannel shirts from time to time!

This is a super cool holiday look, I love the knit and skirt together and can really see you looking stunning in this outfit. I also like how you can change the look up with different footwear.

I am all for getting a party outfit to celebrate the Christmas season, especially if the pieces are versatile and give you different options. I am looking for a holiday outfit that will go with these sandals and boots. I thought I found the right dress, but the fit was off. NEXT!

I'm not shopping, but I'm thinking. I want a fun, updated holiday outfit. My party clothes are feeling a bit predictable (I've been doing plaid pants plus fitted sweater or silky blouse; or occasionally a black dress with sparkly tights). I visualized this outfit below as I was falling asleep the other night, and put together all the pieces in Finds to remind myself. This is a 90s look, no? Chunky sweater plus miniskirt plus kooky tights. A la Clueless or Empire Records (how did Empire Records never get as popular as Clueless?!).

I've been a wuss about tights the past few years. I used to be able to wear skirts and dresses in mid-winter, but I run so cold now (I blame three years in the southwest) that I rarely bother. If I wear a dress, I wear it with black or grey leggings so I don't freeze (and sometimes wear Heattech long johns *under* the leggings). So I have this huge collection of cool tights that I only wear a few times a year. I really shouldn't add more, but it's a cheap way to create variety and I'm always finding pairs I like.

The other nice thing about this formula is footwear can go a lot of different directions. I own none of the right pieces to actually do this (except some shoes -- the last three pairs -- that might work), but we'll see. I really like the idea of it and may scour thrift stores for an approximation.
