Angie, your picture of the delicata squash as decor waiting to be eaten inspired me to buy some for the apartment, where deep yellow is one of my colors.

When we came home from our overnight at the nearby fancy inn, I brought 3/4 of my delicious dinner (roasted stuffed delicata squash) to LMA. He ate it for lunch, accompanied by my telling him repeatedly what it was called and that the skin is soft enough to eat.

Directly after lunch, he and Mr. A went to the grocery store for me, and I gave them a list that included 3 delicatas. Mr. A (who just ate roasted delicata squash cooked by me last week, and watched me eat my dinner at the inn): "What IS delicata squash?" Me: "Ask LMA." He does. LMA: "I have no idea."

They then ask the produce manager at the market, who also doesn't know what they're talking about. It's like the Y chromosome carries the gene for OBLIVIOUSNESS.

*carries off a bit of the brownie skillet and ice cream*
The only cooking I'm doing these days is bagels in the toaster oven and frozen burritos and curries in the microwave- and I don't see that changing within the next month. My job zaps the miniscule amount of energy I can muster this time of year :/

WOW, SarahD8, those look scrumptious and beautiful! We have very similar taste in baked goods, I've noticed - AND your artistic Christmas yule log cracks me up.

April, we are not gluten-free! I'm not allergic to anything - apart from sodding suncreen - yet, we LOVE these gluten-free cookies. Made them for gluten-free friends, and now we're hooked! I can eat anything chocolate flavoured, as long as it isn't bitter dark chocolate. I'd love your skillet chocolate cookie, and that would have zero effect. It's the slabs of chocolate that disagree with me, apart from a few types of brands. Something in cocoa makes me feel sick.

Such fun reading what everyone is up to!

IP - let us know how your skillet brownies turn out.

Angie - I did not know that chocolate made you feel ill. Also is it you or Greg who avoids gluten? Anyway, your cookies look wonderful, and hello, delicata squash!

SDB - I am still chuckling over your yule log. Those kitchen disasters make hilarious memories, don't they?

Bella - you had me at puff pastry.

I made these puff pastry mini Christmas trees and they were a big hit with my family.
https://www.jcookingodyssey.co.....mas-trees/
My sister got us some panettone and it was delicious! I want to try my hand at making one but I don't have the right kind of mold/pan. I might just try making a no-knead cinnamon raisin bread, which used to be a favorite a couple of years ago.

The brownie cakes look delicious, as do Angie's cookies!

April your story of trying to master potica reminds me of the year I tried making a chocolate yule log. We still refer to the episode as "that one time Sarah baked a giant reindeer poo."

Holiday baking for me so far is a batch of Lucia buns that my kid took to school for a club yesterday. We'll bake another batch for us this afternoon. Pepparkakor and speculaas cookies this weekend. Then julekage (Scandinavian Christmas bread with cardamom, raisins, and candied citron) on the 24th to eat for breakfast on the 25th. Then I will tell my stand mixer how much I love her and give her a rubdown and let her rest for several months!

April, you are a compelling writer and story teller! As always, you had me captivated - as did those scrumptious skillet brownies :)

Love that you celebrate it ALL, and with fun homemade food too!

I’ve been cooking up a storm. And we’re eating lots of stollen, like we do every December. Our best! I’ve settled on one cookie to keep on baking this month since we can’t get enough of them - and the stollen!

Gluten-free white chocolate. On a white chocolate kick. One of the few chocolates that don’t make me feel ill. Hubs loves white chocolate too

IP - the brownie recipe is this one. (Barefoot Contessa loves XL eggs but I rarely have them on hand, so I just used 3 smaller ones.)

The little skillets are pretty easy to find - a good item to share with someone nearby who also wants to try the recipe. They are quite small and stackable. I was incredulous that they don't need greasing in any way before adding the batter, but they don't.

I do not know how similar poviticia is to potica, but I was raised with poviticia. It looks very similar with similar roots.
However I would hands down chose the skillet brownies and I have the pan but not the recipe!!!

Hello! I have been so busy running back and forth between house and apartment that I have been pretty inactive here.

This past week, though, I have been living in the kitchen at the house. Tuesday was Mr. A's birthday, which required a special dinner, which I delivered. The birthday cake was molten skillet brownies. At 6 pm, Mr. A: I can't possibly eat a whole one! At 6:15, see below. (These are tiny skillets, what was he thinking?)

Wednesday I had to wait for dishwasher repair guy so I dove in to a first-for-me baking project: potica. See that lovely spiral? Yeah, I did not achieve that. A former sister-in-law (whose mother was the potica champion) confirmed that the spiral takes practice.

Thursday I started soaking dried fruits in rum for fruitcake-making.

Saturday I spent the entire afternoon seasoning my new carbon-steel wok and baking those fruitcakes. I'll send both to my little bro and his wife, who usually only get one and then must hoard what they can because everyone in their family loves fruitcake. This year they can be generous.

Sunday I set up my outdoor fry station on the covered porch and settled in to fry potato latkes while Mr. A set up our Christmas tree. We celebrate everything.
