I clearly used "banning" as a relative term. Certain stations have
stopped the play of the song, which has nothing to do with government or
censorship. Of course private and for-profit stations will play what
their listening public will allow.

Thank you for coming clean on that. There is so much acrimony in the world today that added sensationalism is unhelpful, imo.

This is on a tangent... but Echo, I have to tell you now about how my Gen Z work children and I discuss the tragedy that is music today... ‘You used to call me on the cell phone’... which is worse, ‘Strange Love’ (about dishing out pain) or Drake (no love)?

Okay, I clearly used "banning" as a relative term. Certain stations have stopped the play of the song, which has nothing to do with government or censorship. Of course private and for-profit stations will play what their listening public will allow.

However, coming from the late 80's and early 90's as far as my listening to radio goes, "Baby, It's Cold Outside" has nothing offensive going for it when compared to songs that were my contemporaries, like Used to Love Her by Guns n Roses or Sex Type Thing from Stone Temple Pilots. That's not to say that either of those songs should be normalized or accepted, just that "Baby, It's Cold Outside" was written by a husband and wife team, and the original parts were labeled "Cat" and "Mouse". It was clearly written as a "game" and intended to be funny. And FWIW, when the song was written, it was VERY common for people, when realizing they'd been speaking out of turn or acting out of character to exclaim, "What's in this drink?!" as a funny excuse for their behaviour.

While I can see the "sinister" side of the song when viewed through today's lenses, I do NOT see it through those same lenses when hearing it. It was intended to be funny and fun, not sinister and date-rapey. Again, I guess it all has to do with what a station's listeners will allow. But, as a PP mentioned, then a whole lot of rap music, or even "popular" music from a different era (i.e. 70's and 80's) would have to not be played as well.

Nobody is banning anything, BTW. It's just that certain radio stations are not playing that song because they have determined their audience doesn't want to hear it. It's the marketplace. Banning and censorship are concepts that implicate the government, not private actors like radio stations.

So then will we soon be banning nearly all rap music too for similar reasons? I am really into music as I like to sing and play guitar so the lyrics have become more and more of an interest to me over the years. Many songs I choose not to learn because I read the lyrics and realize I don't like the message in the song and don't want it drilled into my memory.

MANY songs have lyrics that someone will find either sad, offensive, rude, discriminatory, etc.

I can see both sides of this debate. The song was written in the 1940's and it reflects a different era. However, I can see the the date rapey aspects when viewed through a modern lens. To be honest, I've never liked the song much and usually think it's sort of annoying so it doesn't bother me that radio stations aren't playing it.

It is not a song I know but I did look up the lyrics.

I suspect like many others it will just fall out of favour as being dated - when written it possibly had the frisson of staying out late and breaking the rules....but it can be looked at in a more sinister fashion.

There are many books/movies that I happily enjoyed that are problematic...

Gone with the Wind - the scene on the stairs with Rhett and Scarlett (to name one- I think there are several issues today)
Trade Wind- MM Kaye novel - I think the sex scene is actually a rape scene
Flowers in the Attic - Virginia Andrew - I read this series avidly as a teen, it is seriously sick.

There are others and how do we judge them with today's eyes and views?

I personally am against most enforced censorship, but stations, stores are free to make their own choices about inappropriate materials.

I sometimes think it is easier to protest these matters rather than the big scary stuff that is happening that we ignore/put our head in the sand about.

It's in a grey area for me. When I first heard it, I thought it sounded playful and flirtatious, and like the woman might really want to stay, but was worried about coming home late. Later, after first-hand experience with date rape, it took on a much more sinister tone. Ear of the listener, I guess.

It's a shame because it's a darn catchy tune, but yeah, it's always had those overtones. I'm OK with radio stations choosing not to play it -- this is not censorship, it's choosing what you believe your market will accept.

This year has been deeply affecting for many who experienced any kind of sexual assault in their lives. I'm not surprised or dismayed at all that some things that have previously gone unchallenged are now being questioned.

I think lots of news outlets have been very irresponsible about this, running headlines that claim there is a ban, then revealing somewhere deep in the article that that isn’t true, it’s simply music venues adjusting their playlists to their listeners’ preferences, which is *what they do* to stay competitive.

That song has given me the creeps for a long time. I don’t know as I’d swear off a station for life because of it, but “what’s in this drink” cuts through any talk of her looking for excuses because she really wanted to stay. That's never happened to me, but “think of my lifelong sorrow” is too close to reality for me. This song and a few other uncomfortable things could lead me to choose a different playlist (because that’s how I listen to music anyway, not on the radio), especially if kids were listening with me.
