Thanks ladies! I now know I'm not losing my mind and I might have a way to rescue the tops. Kelly, I don't wear belts often either, so I think we both have "hungry" jeans. Any ideas on what to do with the jeans? They are my favorites and were not cheap.

I don't know what causes it either but all of my well worn layering tops from Old Navy have holes in that exact spot. I'm thinking it has to be a rough spot on my jeans since I rarely wear a belt.

There is a liquid called June Tailor-Fray Block sold at places like JoAnn's. It works in the same way nail polish works on panyhose. Be sure it is Fray Block and not Fray Check.
Hope that helps.

It sounds like the damage is all in the same spot....different tops? Do you have a belt that you wear with them? Sounds like we are thinking along the same lines, a pair of pants with a rough spot or something like that.

Don't give up on repairing them...sounds like a couple stitches by a skilled seamstress could do the trick. I cut the tag off a jcrew knit cami once and to my horror left 2 tiny holes in my sweater...I was able to repair myself, but would have paid my tailor to do the job if needed...good luck.

Calling all Sherlock Holmes fans: I would love some help with my wardrobe mystery!

I have recently discovered not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4!! of my newer knit tops have small holes in the front near the waistband. A few tiny holes right near the part of the wasitband where the button/snap is. When I discovered the problem the first time, I wrote it off as a moth or being partcularly rough in packing it and snagging it a zipper or soemthing like that. But, now I know I've got a more systematic problem and want to get to the bottom of it. Arghh! I hate that whatever this is has ruined perfectly good tops!

All the affected tops are cotton or cotton-blend knits-- think t-shirt alternatives. It has happened more as the weather has gotten warmer and I've worn a top without a cami underneath or just a short cami like the "second base" Angie blogged about.

I'm thinking the culprit is the waistband of my favorite jeans-- the corner of the tab with the buttonhole. It does not feel rough if I rub it with my finger, but I cannot come up with any other explanation. Could it be? What could I do to solve it? Does anyone have other ideas? I've given up hope that the holes can be repaired, but I'd welcome any advice on this as well.
