Suz, that is very true, given that I wore an unlined sleeveless dress to a concert back in November! There's still a part of me that thinks I should have one "nice" lined dress, though. Probably the same part that has a blazer hanging in my closet.

cindysmith, who knew elk bugling would be such a hot topic? Here's a video, so you can hear the sound:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSpGd9p17n0

Hahah, enjoying the Vans/ Cons talk here. I can't really tolerate either (except with an insole) so will leave you to it!

So, what you said about the dress is a brilliant insight -- the lining makes it too structured for casualization. I completely agree. Which is why I almost never wear dresses casually in winter -- they basically have to be sweatshirt or sweater dresses (in my climate). In contrast, I can casualize all but my "occasion wear" summer dresses really easily. You might never need a dress with lining again at this rate -- not in your current climate!

rachylou, funny thing is I tend to sort in the spreadsheet before I do it in real life, which probably isn't the BEST tactic.

nemosmom, that's awesome! I really like some of the colors vans has been releasing non-custom, though!

Angie, I've been wearing Chucks for almost thirty years! Haven't even tried on a pair of Vans yet, though, so that's all speculative.

suntiger, I hope it finds a good home!

nemosmom, I decided after listening to advice the blogger Jessica Rose Williams that I didn't need to get rid of anything until I was well and truly ready. She does this holding zone exercise once a season as part of a wardrobe review, which I think is a great idea to keep it from getting out of control.

Janet, yeah, I think it's all well and good to be truly at home in our style, but there are times when you just want to wear something classic and blend in!

Preppy Pear, I always figured if I had to go to a real formal event I'd rent something. Hoping coronavirus doesn't spell the end of that experiment!

Vildy, it's cotton, but that's exactly what we're going to try!

Very smart editing/use of holding zone! I agree that keeping the black dress for now is a good idea - you just never know. I have zilch in terms of fancy dress in my wardrobe so if the need arises there will be a panic post on the forum, hee.

Great assessments. I tend to hold onto pieces like the black dress too (for me it’s black trousers, and yes, at least 2-3 times a year they are exactly what I need, so it’s worth it to have one pair of great tailored well-fitting pair of black trousers). If you have room, I think those classics that get occasional wear can be worth keeping.

Good luck on the replacement tee. That’s always a challenge. And for the old graphic tee...that’s exactly the kind of thing I end up demoting to pajamas. My old skull print Zadig & Voltaire tee has had a long life as sleepwear! And a cow print tee that got too thin serves the same function but at the ranch. It’s probably only a few washes away from the rag pile at this point.

Lisa, hah! In early fall, male elk do this mating call that sounds kind of like a cross between an unhappy horse and an elephant. It echoes across the valleys in RMNP, and you can watch them gather and fight for dominance from the mountains above. Pretty amazing, but it only really happens in the very early mornings and right before sundown. Thus, the 5am wakeup.

Joy, I've definitely dressed it down before, but it didn't feel comfortable and casual. It's a lined dress with a lot of structure, so even if it looked fine, I didn't enjoy wearing it casually.

I think I once had that Calvin Klein dress in a light ta. It was perfect with the right blush accessories for a spring/ summer wedding guest outfit and got compliments. I no longer have it because it go stained, but have missed it as it filled a hole. Hold you dress down your black dress? Maybe post it for ideas on the Forum? Could you wear it with brown like the brown Seychelles ankle boots, a brown backpack and canvas belt, brushed steel pendant necklace on a brown leather cord? If needing a topper, a brown canvas chore jacket or leather jacket or long cardigan?

Thanks, Sal! As you can probably tell, I tend to use my holding zone as an "I'm not quite ready yet" area. It's a good way to test out how I feel without something and discover if I really do need a specific item for the occasions I think might warrant it.

(And yes, Kevin's work parties were exactly why I have that dress. The new job doesn't seem to have any of that type of cocktail-dress-code events.)

I agree with your calls here.

The black fit and flare is a good basic for events (such as work do's, more conservative parties) - I have the odd work dinner with clients where I would pull this type of dress out. But if you don't attend these sorts of events it might be best to find a new home.

I would probably wear the tees for at home yoga or layering purposes. I would pass on the faux fur too as someone will adore it and make good use of it.

Hope the knitwear works for your son!!

Dug into my holding zone this afternoon. It's just one shopping tote on the floor of my closet.

First thing I did was compare the actual bag contents against the things I'd marked as "holding zone" on my spreadsheet (photo 1). They mostly matched, except that the holding zone also had a few pieces I'd already made a decision on and marked as retired. I set those aside with my donate/sell items, which are waiting for shops and donation centers to fully reopen.

Second, I went through the remaining items to see where I stand on them at the moment. Most of these are in Finds.

Calvin Klein fit and flare dress - This isn't a perfect fit for my current style, but it fits well and is flattering. It hasn't gotten a lot of wear because it's not an easy piece to dress down, even though it seems like it should be. If I don't pull it out in the next six months or year, I'll pass it on, despite the shockingly low number of wears. Until then, back in the bag.

On the Road tee - I love the idea of this tee and the design of it, but it's very thin, so I rarely wore it. I can't quite bear to part ways yet, though. Back in the bag.

olive infinity scarf (not shown) - This was an inexpensive acrylic scarf from Target, but it's so soft and has an urban edge that I like. Only problem is that days when I need a warm, fluffy scarf in southern California are few and far between. And generally, when we do have those days, I choose my cashmere wrap instead. Still...I like it, so it gets a reprieve. Back in the bag.

Orvis fur vest - Nothing wrong with this, but I never felt like myself in it. Not even when I wore for 5am elk bugling in Rocky Mountain National Park, which I feel like should have been its natural habitat. Passing on with 15 wears.

LL Bean Fisherman's Sweater - Bought this in 2015 and it has 22 tracked wears. I don't think I've worn it since moving to California and it's too heavy and bulky to make it into trip capsules. I offered it to my son, who likes the look of it (which is less waist-defining than the Find appears), but thinks the yarn is too stiff. We're going to try a couple of things to soften it. If that works, he'll take it. Either way, passing on with 22 wears.

Converse leather low tops - Oh, my babies. Designed custom in 2015. Falling apart, but they were in the bag because I wasn’t ready to let them go. I am now. Retiring with 135 wears.

navy Boden cardigan - Still in great shape after 64+ wears, but doesn't quite mesh with my style anymore. I have some sentimental attachment, so I'm holding onto it for a bit longer. This is another unisex piece that suits my son's Kurt Cobain aesthetic, and he likes it, so if I don't keep it'll go straight to him. For now...back in the bag.

Seychelles brown ankle boots - 67 wears and looking a bit rough at the moment. The footbed lining is peeling off and making them uncomfortable, which could easily be solved with an insole. I'll decide in the next month or two if they're worth a rehab project. Back in the bag.

That being done, I added two things to the bag from my closet.

Target long-sleeve linen tee - Bought this for $12 and have worn it 73 times. It's been getting thinner with each wash to the point where I can't wear it without an underlayer anymore. It's an essential, but I've been keeping it around until I find a good replacement. No luck yet, so it's going into the bag to see if I can do without.

Eileen Fisher linen shift dress (not shown) - 24 wears since 2017. So close to the 30, but I just don't enjoy wearing it. The arms are a bit tight, it's shorter than is strictly comfortable, and I don't like it over pants. I will probably sell it, but we'll see if I dig it out this summer.
