Thanks, all! It's refreshing to have extra space. I'm now eyeing my shoes and belts, thinking of sending some of those to the holding zone too. Three purses made their way there as well.

Joy, I do similar to unfrumped. I hang things up on the valet rod to air out a bit, or on a belt hook off to the side in the closet. I do that a lot with jeans -- just hang them by a belt loop on a hook so I can wear them the next day.

Hooray for empty hangers and being patient with body changes. I find the holding zone idea pretty useful, not just for fluctuations, but because it helps iron out feelings of ambivalence toward a garment. Either that, or I was able to apply my Kondo tactics more ruthlessly this past weekend.

Joy, for separating items, I made my peace with, if I don't think an item needed to go in wash or to cleaners, it could ( eventually) go back to its spot. But, I like the idea of airing it out before putting it back close to others clothes. So I will hang them either on s valet rod or in an open space on rod overnight and then put back.
I also re- wear some tanks , esp in winter or when I wear something just between work and bedtime. I also " air out" but since I have dupes I'd like to separate clean from gently worn.
I have done different things, used hooks, or used 2 different small drawers in closet, but lately am considering a new " tank hanger" from Container Store.

You have made your closet a beautiful and serene spot that looks inviting and organized. So inspirational! I am running into a problem of what to do with pieces that I have worn briefly. They are not in need of cleaning yet but I also do not want to hang them back with the clean items. Do you ever have this problem? What do you do?

Janet, I am now going to go hide in a corner and cry. I haven't had a real closet in six and a half years, and I had forgotten what I was missing. Now I remember, and I feel sad over my little storage compartments I've been coping with for so long.

Nice progress, though. Good work, girl!

I love these posts too. What a ton of work you've put in! I think an expanded holding zone is perfect for this. I'll be interested to see how having a smaller, well-loved closet suits you. I have nowhere for a large holding zone at the moment, but I plan to do this when we finally move.

Interesting that you could edit more the next day. I wonder if that would be true for the next couple of days? How are you feeling about the items you love? Do you have tons of items you love?

Wow, super job!

I also have a too - big HZ which can become a catch- all for seasonal or random undecided.

I know I still avoid the gut- feeling Y/N approach but I did work through some issues and culled about 35 items this weekend. at least I am making some progress!

I also determined to set different categories for anything outside of the main closet.
1) love but doesn't fit right due to a potentially " reversible" issue-/ ahem- slightly tight pencil skirt.
I determine these need to be something I would buy again or buy very similar. Usually for me that is a fantastic fabric and/or a color or pattern that went with everything AND I'm not coming across better/ similar.
Still I know that the fit may never be right so these should be a lonely few. Being more rigorous on whether it's a really unusual item that I still love re: style helped me decide to discard some that I finally went, aha, I'd rather shop for something new, even different.

2) things that fit fine and could be useful but not sure why not wearing.
As you have done, I'm picking ones to trial in outfits to shake loose some kind of epiphany re: keep or toss.

3) Great items that fit and are definite keepers but I actually do want to store outside of main closet- such as very dressy items and very casual out of items- things I wouldn't realistically ever remix with workwear or current casual wear.

What a lot of work but wow!, it really looks good and will be so much easier to find things. I moved to a house with a bigger closet almost three years ago and the closet still looks good, but I can't add much more. I'll have to start a holding zone or practice one in/one out if I do.

Ah, empty hangers. Love that feeling! This look good. Have your ever tried the backward hanger system? Turn all hangers so they face the wrong direction. Then after an item is worn, the hanger is turned correctly. After the season, or year for all season closets, you know what was not worn because the hangers are still backwards. I have in the past and think I will go turn mine now.

For those who like wardrobe edit progress stories (like I do!)...

I did a closet review -- tried on all my pants and skirts, and many of my in-season tops and jackets. A bunch of things don't fit. Some of my tops were shockingly tight. Yikes. Proof that my middle has thickened. I'm not happy about it, but I have to say that most of my favorite items are things that still fit fine. Not much was too upsetting in terms of seeing these too-small items go into hiding -- I'm more disappointed that my weight/size has crept up that much.

Since I am resuming monitoring my eating and ramping up my exercise, I am not going to be quick about getting rid of tight things, but some tops are in the donate pile anyway. Others are going into my experimental big holding zone.

1 Piles of out of season, too small, or questionable items to go in the holding zone.

2 My tops after the edit. Holy crap, that's still a lot. Vests are on this rack too. This is just long-sleeved/fall-winter stuff.

3 Since this is a prime wearing season, I want to keep my jackets out of the holding zone -- except for one or two, they're all on this rack. I reorganized them to pull some unworn jackets further front and center. Upon looking at them today, I might put another few in the holding zone to free up more space.

4 Long jackets and vests, and only two dresses, and three skirts. I love that this rack is no longer crammed.

5 Sweaters and winter tees - I didn't take too many out because this is peak wearing season and I want to see what I reach for. A few more of these might go in the holding zone soon.

6 Jeans and pants. I pulled out all the ones that are so tight as to be unwearable. Switched things around to bring some infrequently worn pants into the light where I will see them better. It's working already because today I pulled out a pair of dark olive coated skinnies I kind of forget that I own.

7 Newly empty hangers.
