I think hourglass sounds good. Here is a page from Imogen Lamport's Inside Out Style blog that is helpful (although there are certainly pages on the blog section of YLF too):

http://www.insideoutstyleblog......pes-x.html

There is also a subtype of hourglass called the figure 8, which you might want to check out:

http://www.insideoutstyleblog......pes-8.html

I couldn't tell from the picture if you have the high figure 8 hip, but from your last post, I thought maybe that's what you meant by the "sloping out." I am a figure 8 and was mystified by my body shape until I discovered what it was. Now that I know what it is, I'm finding it easier to dress well.

I'd say hourglass! (yes, YLF body types do factor the shoulders)

I gain fat in the thighs too, and my hips are above the butt and smaller; in fact all of that sounded very familiar lol

Oh boo. Picture link not working for me.

From the numbers, you sound hourglass-y to me, but how things weigh "visually" is very different from how things go by the numbers. And if you put on weight around the thighs and have solid calves, like CocoLion says, I can see pear hybrid as a possibility too.

Well thanks for pointing me in the right direction girls. I hope this pic is helpful. I'm not sure if its any good.
Cocolion: A hybrid huh? well that's the last thing I would have guessed. thanks for the hip tip. I think I did measure correctly (lower to crotch) but All the same my hips kinda just slope out below the belly button but above the butt- looks almost the same width but maybe bigger than the lower half does. But since its above the butt it still gives me a much smaller measurement which was confusing.
April: Thanks, I think I understand shape a bit better now.

Everything that Gigi said, plus a response to your question: shoulders matter very much, but it's the width across the front that matters rather than the circumference.

Width across the front is about shape, whereas circumference is about size. Does that make sense?

Welcome, Britty!

The best way to find out your body shape is to post a picture to the forum or else link to a picture that you have posted on an outside site (I know that new members can't post pix). It's best to wear stuff that is really form fitting--a tank top and leggings, for example. You can cut your head off if you don't want a picture of yourself like that all over the Internet :^).

The reason a picture is best is because the body shapes are usually based on what the view is from the front as opposed to from the side. For example, fat on the hips can appear more on the sides of the hips or more on the rear end, or equally divided between the two. That's why pictures are so helpful.

I would have to see a picture to make a final guess, but by the sound of it I would say Pretty Pear/Hourglass hybrid. The Pear because you said your weight goes to your hips and thighs (and btw the hip measurement is taken at the fullest part around your hips/rear, on me that's really low like around my crotch). The hourglass because your shoulder measurement balances your hips.

Hope that helps!

PS -- Welcome!!

Hiya every! Just introducing myself and asking for a bit of advice. My name is Brittany and I am a 20yr old student from California who wants to eventually get a Ph.D. in archaeology.I came onto this forum for some fashion wisdom because my tomboyish nature has confused me to basic fashion rules. I have no idea what my body type is! I have been to many different calculators and get Pear, or rectangle, or even one of those 16 types with names that escape me. I just do not seem to fit into any of the descriptions as well as I'd like. I took measurements- no idea if I did it correctly though for the shoulders and hips (P.S. do shoulders even matter?)
Shoulders 40 in. (maybe 41- hard to measure myself)
Bust: 33 in (Im a 34 A.)
Waist: 29 in (Definitely defined enough to notice I have one- but IDK if its "tiny)
Hips:38 (Or 39 if I got it in the right place... I think the tape is supposed to wrap around the butt right? or am I measuring too low?)

Height: 5'5
Weight: Ehhhhh I haven't taken one in awhile but probably around 150.

Fat usually gathers on my thighs and butt like crazy. Although I am not certain I would call my butt curvy as even if it could me it probably needs a good workout. Still, it strikes me as rather flat if I'm a pear. My calves are surprisingly thick as well- but they feel pretty solid so I'm guessing its mostly muscle. I think this might be because as a child the only exercise I would get was bike riding, and I have been told I retain muscle extremely well. I didn't believe this until my senior year at high-school where I took a weights class (and probably worked out my upper half for the first time in my life). Within two weeks my scrawny arms bulked up in thickness department practically overnight.

Thanks guys, really need the help as I am trying to workout and was told that knowing your body type is imperative to effectiveness.
