What a blast from the past! That was definitely the era of Laura Ashley too.
I am following just a bit after you. I remember (very early 70s?) when YSL introduced the peasant look. I was planning a sewing project, and my very trendy, very judgy friend was prepared to look down her nose at me until she found out I was making a "peasant skirt". Which I loved and wore for the whole decade.
I also remember the maxi dresses, often with the bib front and back ties that didn't quite flatter me. I sang in some musical groups and they were practically a uniform. In fact when our church choir did a "70s theme" I wore one of those with bare feet and a small braid...

I love these! They bring back lots of memories. I wore similar outfits in the 70s. I have some photos somewhere but I am not sure where. Maybe my brother has them.

You were always pretty, and you had a great sense of style and fashion. These are fun to look through. I had some similar styles, but any photos like these of mine would be in my dad's collection of albums. I want to get out those albums next time I visit him--which may be quite some time, now! His retirement community is very restricted for now, and rightly so. I'm glad they are keeping safe.

These are so sweet! You look lovely no matter what style you wear. These are quite nostalgic for me. I had a prom dress almost identical to your pink dress in #5. Honestly, my boho tastes haven't changed much since the 70's.

I love these! Amazing how many of these pieces would look right at home in the current era. I love the last outfit too. I would totally wear the shape of 13.

I crocheted the same or an extremely similar shawl to yours in #2. Mine was also white. And I had a long sleeve version of #6 in a slightly different pink.

Those are so beautiful. Definitely one of my shadow personas. I’ve tentatively labelled my 70s persona as “Charlie girl”, after the perfume, but that may not be quite right, not peasanty enough.
I am younger than you and didn’t develop that persona until I was about 17, so that was 1978, and I kept it going for a few years until the bright colours of the 80s took over and I began to earn money, around 1983/4.
I could possibly look up some old photos as I have a couple of days leave just now. And nothing exciting to do with it!

I remember the empire style of flare beginning just under the bust being popular. No black in my wardrobe back then. Grey was rare and usually worn with pink. Deep jewel tones were starting to get popular.

Or as the Cher ear worm I now have: Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.

After I showed the dress in #2 (early 70s) I went through old photos to collect dresses I'd worn in the 70s. Not everything I wore was what we called peasant or hippie, but I had plenty of them. Seems to me this was too early for Laura Ashly, but I could be wrong.

Can you call it a peasant dress when it's made of polyester? We did have a lot of weird things to choose from. I don't find any of these particularly funny now, although someone else might, Of course, men and boys also wore some outfits they wouldn't want shown now.

Most of these photos are faded, or else didn't turn out at all. Probably a good thing.

#1--a long, diagonal plaid skirt. Not really the style we're talking about, but I dip my toe in to the idea of a long skirt after a decade of above the knee and miniskirts.

#2 My dress with shawl & granny boots.

#3-5 The middle 70s.A velveteen dress bought at the Treasury, a JC Penney attempt to be like K Mart. Worn with thick soled oxfords. Well, I couldn't wear brown with black. What style that brown dress was I couldn't say. The pink dress was called a "patio dress," and for some reason Mr. M thought it was great to do diagonal photos.

# 6-7 The pink puffy sleeve was a long dress.
I had a long black dress with ruffles and a hippie air. No long shot.of either.

8-9 My sister's wedding. She told me I could wear anything I wanted, so I turned up in the only non-ruffly, knee-length outfit. My sisters, Mom, and niece.

# 10 I wore this ruffly dress to the "prom," or as some called it, "dog and pony show." It was the annual dress up event for Mr.'s Big 8 CPA firm, (now defunct.) It bears a vague resemblance to my sister's wedding dress, so why didn't I just borrow hers?

11-12 Definitely a "peasant dress" from the late 70s. Mr. M thought I should wear it to work on a Friday--we were just beginning the era of dress-down-Friday. Only female associate in a stodgy old law firm? I think not.

13 And another polyester "peasant dress" that I may have worn to Prom another year. That's my older son all spiffied up for church. I had a similar one in pale pink--but no photos.

14. My favorite look from that era, signaling the end. Just call me the Farmer's Wife. I loved that skirt. I keep looking for another one similar to it.

Anyone else willing to share photos from a bygone era?
