I was wondering about hiking shoes. Last fall we went to a birding festival in South Texas. One day it was bitter bitter cold. I was cold even with every layer on. Our guide was wearing Tevas. I couldn’t believe it. He said his feet couldn’t be enclosed or something like that. Whenever I wear sport sandals in dirt, I get sand under my feet and have to take them off. I just can’t stand that. I wear Salomon hiking shoes, which work for my feet.

ETA: I ordered some Keens for bike riding.

Thanks all! Birkies, and similar have been my hiking shoes as long as I can remember. The first day wearing this pair I put 6 miles on them The arch hits just right on me. I only hike in mild to hot weather, and just hate having my feet encased if I can avoid it. The trails I hike on are well maintained, national/state parks and my own and adjoining land.

As far as my numbers, my main need is for warm to hot weather- because that's when I'm outside more. The crops and leggings are good for the cooler days, but under about 50 degrees I stay inside!

Interesting that there are no proper shoes! Even I wear ugly trail shoes for hikes Excellent traction and protection. Camping though, I suspect the Birkies can work just fine.

I love your idea of basing it on forest tones! Fun.

This looks like a good mix of items. I'm amazed you hike in Birks, though! I guess it depends very much on one's conditions...I need closed toes, mostly, and at minimum some kind of tread on the sole.

Very sensible distribution among categories in both of your capsules and very sensible to have even thought to compile capsules for these activities.

I would have to keep the sneakers in the mix for hiking because of abundant poison ivy and I also need a waterproof sandal. I'm waiting for a pair of the Chaco Mega Z Cloud sandals to arrive, the fit is very adjustable. Tevas are like having plastic waffles strapped to my feet fit wise.

I'm going to do a real life review of the season and try this myself.

Suntiger, I am loving seeing your lovely capsules for your activities. My activewear is a bit all over the place and not cohesive. I really need to lift my game when it comes to my gym wear, although I have still not ventured back to the gym yet.

What a great idea. Start with the shoes. I like lug soled hiking sneakers. Think of light weight gloves and hat that will fit in your pockets. I like REI as a starting place to look for these items. For warm weather, you may want some water sneakers.

Suntiger, you are on fire! I like this hiking capsule. I also enjoy hiking and would recommend a breathable waterproof or windproof jacket. I've seen a few 3 in 1 jackets which have a waterproof outer jacket with a detachable polyester fleece inner, that seems to be very useful!

Good capsule start!
These casual- active capsules are important to me too.
I kind of combine walking- hiking though for hiking- which for me is usually just 2-4 horrors-I have a greater focus on specific gear functions- zip and deep or cargo pockets for shorts for example. Footwear with trades/ lug soles, wide toe box.
For light hiking leather + fabric I have had some luck with Columbia at a good price point. Though I might find out how durable.
Plan to be 3 seasons and some venturing into deep winter though maybe not as far afield.
But tends to be warmer weather and I tend to like pockets in my pants and shorts since would not have a jacket.
So far relying on years- old Eddie Bauer synthetic shorts with zip Pockets and Columbia cotton cargo shorts and have not seen any similar with same inseams & pockets.
Need high- neck tanks & wear a shirt over, can remove if shady ( still wear sunscreen). Am trying some different fabric tanks such as the Athleta Tencil beliw, but have not yet found what I want in a true “ technical “ fabrics. Stymied somewhat by lack of ability to try on in stores.

This is my hiking/camping capsule so far . The goal is for it to be based on the element Wood- with greens, browns- but I use black too of course.

I only hike/camp in hot to transitional weather (maybe mid 50s +), though I tossed the puffer into the capsule cause it's lightweight and has nice zip pockets.

Additions would be another sleeved top or 2 in rust and/or olive and/or camo, hiking boots (have worn trainers or my flat-ish ON booties in colder weather), cargo joggers (rust or olive), and maybe a warmer hoodie. But it'll be 6 months before I'd use any of that!
