Yep! I have this issue too due to body proportions. High rise pants....and other clothing that sits at the waist.....seem to be designed on the model where your waist is supposed to be 10" smaller that your hips. Well, I'm not designed that way.....it's more like an 8" difference. I had the same issue when I was a teenager as I do now in my 50's. I've got a bit of excess fluff on my stomach now but I'm fairly trim and wear a 26 jean.

I have several pairs of higher rise jeans.....it's a matter of trial and error to find brands and cuts that work for you. I've had luck with J Crew, J Brand, Mother, 7 For All Mankind. I haven't had any luck with Paige either.....they strangle my waist. Lots of try ons is what you have to do.

Edit....just noticed that this is an old thread that was resurrected.

I commiserate. Tailoring is your friend!
I also recommend COS skinny ankle jeans. They are high rise, but not a super high rise, and don’t bag out like so many jeans do. They’re also reasonably priced.

Girl I have the same problem! I’ve just accepted that some of us need to wear belts because of our body shape, no shame in that use it to your advantage with your outfit if possible. American Eagle high rise has been the best brand I found that fit out of many. I still wear a belt to compensate for any stretch, but they still fit the best. In the past I’ve tried Old Navy and Banana Republic but the stretch was so bad for the high rise even a belt couldn’t help me

I also often need a straighter fit. Not sure if you ever shop Loft but the Marisa fit tends to be a bit straighter, so I often get workwear trousers from them. I also find Madewell denim to be pretty great!

Avia, yes a waistband alteration is the simplest alteration of them all! They just take in a dart or two at the waistband to nip it in.

April, yes I think the rockstar is mostly just skinnies. I haven't had a lot of luck with AE for jeans, though I do have one pair of high rise jean shorts I got last summer.

Angie, I haven't tried NYDJ in years because last time I did (years, maybe 10 years ago at this point) the cut for me was not straight at all? Am I missing something now?

Agree about Jcrew. Those fit me pretty well -- I just find the denim a bit stiff for my liking. But basically the 5% of my jeans that aren't rockstars are Jcrew!

Angie - can you get a waistband altered if it's too small? That's one alteration I've never considered.
I've run into the same problem with high rises. I was so excited about the trend because the right pair can really rein in the extra middle bits. But I've found a lot of them styles are made for a tiny waist. The ones I've had the most luck with are the Madewell skinny's. But I really haven't had luck with any other leg styles.

MM -- is you're not sensitive about what the size tag says, try American Eagle high rise jeans and size up at least one size, possibly two. (They're a budget-friendly juniors brand after all, and those tend to run small.)

I don't have the problem that pants slip down, but I do have the problem in the last several years that pants are cut too narrow in the waist for me, even though the seat/hips fit. I have had the best luck with jeans from White House Black Market. It's best if you can go to a store and try on several pairs because not all of their cuts work the same, but I have three styles that have been surprisingly forgiving to weight gain in the mid-section, far more so than any other pant in my stable (except for those with elastic waists, ha). One is mid-rise and the other two are high-rise. I am definitely going to try Old Navy Rockstars after reading this thread!

YES! This is definitely a problem with higher rise pants for me! That’s why I loved the lower rise trend. I find mid-rise fits me like a higher rise without the curving in problem. I did try on some Wit and Wisdom a few months ago and they fit pretty well, I returned them because they weren’t what I was looking for but the fit was good. I also used to like Gap but don’t get to the mall very often and havent tried them on in years. I have found I have pretty good luck with junior sizes, they seem to run straighter, although I have to buy them bigger than I would like.

Great responses and lots of good ideas. I've wondered about having pants taken in at the back, or else sewing elastic in the back.

Jenni, I haven't yet found elastic waist pants that work for me. Last time I was in a B&M store I did see a new brand--Liverpool--that were pull on jeans. Did try elastic waist pants a couple of years ago and the quality wasn't there.

BrieN today I did pull out my white R&B jeans for the first time this year. I am one of these people who just can't wear white jeans until it is warm weather--and we've had nothing but rain lately. They aren't high rise, but I navigated a big birthday party without them sliding down too much.

Karie, I've done well in the past with BR pants and jeans. The Martin fit worked well for me for years, but now they seldom have it. I did buy some Ryan pants on sale several months ago and haven't worn them yet--they are fairly lightweight pants and at last it is time I tried them out.

Haven't tried Gap or Old Navy for a while. There was a time when I wore mainly Gap, but that was a couple of decades ago.I am going to have to find a high energy day and go to the mall and try some on, including Wit and Wisdom and some other brands you have
suggested.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Have you tried wit and wisdom? I like the elastic in the waist to cinch in but with some give. I’ve also had good luck with Pilcro, but those are more dependent on the cut.

Also in favor of tailoring. I almost always need the adjustment at the center back seam and it’s amazing how much better the pants feel.

Try the high-rise Old Navy Rockstar jeans. I have converted 95% of my jeans to these! Not everyone likes the denim as it's stretchy (but does not bag out). I find they are super comfortable! I could do yoga in these. I could sleep in these. I could go on a 12 hour plane ride in these!

They're definitely designed for a straighter figure as I don't have much in the hip area and there's not much difference between my hip and my waist. In fact, I find they fit well in the hips and are a tad loose in the waist, requiring a belt. I use the invisi-belt, so I can tighten and loosen it throughout the day as needed.

I always have to wear a belt with jeans though, otherwise they do not stay put.

so much this!!!

i have gained post menopause weight in my belly--upper and lower. i've transitioned to high rise pants and have made piece with my jiggly bits that cause some creasing at the top of the thighs.

i've also been more diligent in getting pants taken in in the back so they fit better in the butt.

judy rosen makes some outstanding jeans that hold in your tummy and perform levitating tricks with your bottom. they are pricey tho.

I guess I’m more hourglass from as far as jeans cut goes, even though originally a pear and now more apple. My bottom could never be described as flat! I find elasticised waists fit best. Second, NYDJ with a bit of elastic sewn onto just the inner back waist, I did that myself and it helped with my sway back.

I have a similar problem- I am built like a board and have some extra belly bits. A rise that hits just below my belly button works best for me so I’m skipping the high rise trend. Lately I’ve been making my own pants, but I do have one pair of at-waist pants from BR (Ryan fit) that fit great with no alterations. As for jeans, Gap is my go-to brand.

I have a similar problem. although my weight is consistently almost the same, my belly is now bigger. I can’t stand feeling of tightness around mid section. I went up a size in pants two years ago. Now pants fit better in the belly area but baggy in the seat. I mostly get my pants taken in in the central seam at the back. Sometimes whole back area needs to be recut. I have unaltered pants from COS. Jeans that fit me the best - 7 for all mankind.

There will be no photos to illustrate this problem! I was cheered when I first read about higher rises coming back in style until about a year ago when I bought a couple of pairs, including some Paige Hoxtons at the NAS.

The problem: my hips and butt are relative straight, which in the past meant at times I've had to have skirts taken in at side seam. As the years pass, despite efforts, my belly has enlarged. Jeans especially just slide down my lower body. A tight belt helps, but is annoying.

Many pants and jeans with a higher waist assume a more hourglass shape, and with the higher cut, they curve inward. So a 29 in a lower or mid cut might fit me fine, but when that waistline rises and curves inward, my body doesn't. If I go up a size, I've got baggy pants.

So I've worked on losing weight and exercised more and see an improvement overall. I still can't get those Hoxton's to zip up without doing the 60s trick of lying on the bed, and decided to send them to a new home.

I generally do well with Joe's Jeans, but don't think I have any higher rise pairs. Also NYDJ, but I bought a sale pair online and similar problem--they fit overall and are too tight to be comfortable.

Have any of you with a similar shape found a brand or cut that works better for you?
