As with all jeans, IMHO one has to kiss a lot of frogs before finding a jean prince. A few months back, I remember trying on a pair of Madewell jeans in a variety of sizes and a Levi's Wedgie jean that looked virtually the same. They weren't and differed quite a bit in flattery. So-called high rises differ quite a bit in the rise, and I don't think one can entirely depend on the stated front and back rise other than in a general sense.

I have a super long torso and super short legs, so high rise jeans really work for me, but some make my torso look blocky. I actually think that the unflattering ones tend to be in Petite sizing, such that I am better off with Regular sizing, understanding that I will have to shorten them more than usual. Of course, YMMV but you may want to consider sizing that you wouldn't ordinarily.

I NEVER bought low rise jeans or pants and avoided many that were mid-rise because they were still too low for me. Due to the high rise drought, I still have (and wear) my old Gloria Vanderbilt jeans!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Simkhais, and am very tempted to give them a try. There’s certainly nothing like this in the stores that I’ve seen. They are spectacular with white footwear, and I’d rather have one fab pair than three that are just OK. I also hear and appreciate the comments about cotton and stretch. I think the stretchiness worked against the Madwells that I tried.

My high rises are close to 100% cotton.
I think with a stretchy jean, the waistband digs in a little bit, and instead of a muffin top that you would get on a lower rise, the muffin is below the waistband. So yes, I would recommend a non-stretchy jean.

Kyle, I’ve tried some exposed button jeans. One key thing I’ve found is that 100% Cotton helps a lot. Stretch jeans, make it too easy for the buttons to stretch, I remember specifically a pair of Express jeans.

ETA, looking at Angie’s recommendations, many have some stretch. So I’m think thicker fabric would help as well

Kyle, I'd have loved to see them on!

Here are recent posts of me in high rise jeans, if the visual is helpful:

You're going to get the best assortment online. Guaranteed.

Another thought - did you need to size down?

Thanks for the insight, Angie. I think what I tried were both true high rise. One was the Madewell Cali Demi boot and the other was a really fun dark wash high rise flare or boot cut from Anthro that I do not see on their site. Those almost made the cut. I suspect I just have not found the right pair for me yet, and there is definitely less to choose from with the exposed button front. I also prefer to try them on in the store versus ordering online if possible, so that reduces options further still. I’ll definitely take a closer look at the options you have posted and continue to watch the site to see what other members find that works for them.

Kyle, have you tried more of a mid-high rise? Some high rises are lower than others. Are you wearing the right foundation wear? Higher rises look and feel better with high rise knickers, IYKWIM - the waistlines are in the same place.

I've dressed you, and can't imagine the high rise not working. Perhaps it's the silhouette of the jeans. Too skinny? Have you tried a more fluid leg fit?

Also, wearing a low contrast top creates vertical integrity with the high rise. Something you might want to try first.

Personally, I had to get used to the high rises all over again four years ago, and I took it slow. I have a short rise so bottoms are high rise on me quite quickly. Now, I love it! And want all my jeans and pants to be high rise because I do a lot of tucking and semi-tucking, and that looks the most on trend - (granted, I like my jeans to be the trendy part of my style). If you don't tuck - it makes no difference how low the rise is. There is never a need to follow a trend for the sake of it. Don't let fashion boss you around. But if you want to try a trend because it appeals to you in some way - why not!

FWIW, as I go through this high rise change with my clients - some LOVE it right away, some need to get used to it, and others say no thank you. You do not need to have a flat midsection to wear the style. That's a dated style concept in my mind. But you DO have to feel fabulous wearing the silhouette. Maybe you need to get used to it Kyle, or maybe you'll stick to mid rises.

Here are the high rises in my wardrobe and I want to get more:

Would love to hear about your experience shopping for and wearing high rise jeans. I’m looking for a pair, preferably with an exposed button front, and have not found them to be especially flattering so far. In my experience they tend to emphasize what I don’t want to emphasize...the stomach area under the belly button. Is this your experience, too? I don’t want to sacrifice a flattering style for something that is on trend, but am ready for an update if I can make it work. Not sure if I should pass on the high waisted look or if I just haven’t found the right pair yet (have tried both Madewell and Anthro to date). In both cases, I thought the jeans looked OK but not great.
