One more word -- I often let the "petite or misses" question be decided by the difference in length. Here, the regular length is 24", which is fairly long, I think. Where do you like your dressed to hit on the leg?

Angie's the expert, but I'd say to go with the petite, if you often have trouble with regulars being too long in the armholes. I say this as a petite 5'0 tall person. I have a 5'4" in daughter who's on the cusp between regular and petite -- she is petite on her upper half, regular on her lower half, and yes she has a long torso.

In my experience, it's far easier to raise a hemline than it is to raise an armhole. It seems like it'd be easy enough to nip a few inches in at the shoulder seams, but it's not always (and anyway doing it raises the waist).

The question with the dress you've chosen is where will it hit on your waist? Your torso may be long, but where does your waist land? For example my 5'4" daughter has an exceptionally long torso, but the skinniest part of her waist lands fairly high, so when dresses or jackets have a defined waist, petite generally work best. But if it's a top and waist is not defined, then regular works best because she needs the length.

When it comes to ordering online, if you have doubts, email the web site. I have had great luck asking for detailed measurements. It may take a day or two, but I always get a response. Go measure a similar dress in your closet that fits well. Ask for measurements from shoulder seam to waist. Ask for length from shoulder to armhole too.

Don't worry about length from waist to hemline -- that is the simplest and cheapest alteration to make. Your dry cleaner can probably do that.

Or, just order both to compare -- and plan to return one.

P.s. It's a lovely dress!

Welcome to YLF!

Sarah's advice is spot on. It's hard to say at this stage. If you are narrow shouldered, short waisted, smallish in the bust, and short in arm length - petites are the way to go. I have 5ft 6 clients who wear petite tops and jackets!

Angie's advice is probably best here, but it likely depends on the brand and how broad your shoulders are, as well as your torso length. If your torso is long, I'd probably go with the regular sizing. I know that lots of Angie's clients who are petite height buy regular sizes. I'm 5'2" and I really need petite sizing, but I'm short-waisted and (I'm finding out) I have narrow or at least sloping shoulders.

Welcome, and good luck! If you're comfortable, post a pic when you've bought the dress to be sure. It looks very pretty.

Hello everyone, a friend on facebook shared this site, and I've been learning so much here. I'm trying to decide on a purchase and could use some expertise here... I'm trying to decide between misses (I'd wear the 6) or petites (wear an 8, based on measurements.) Since I'm 5 '3", I could wear petites, but I have an hour glass figure with a long torso, so maybe the misses length is better? I'm worried about misses being too large in the arm holes though.
