Have done in the past and it was very helpful. Until it wasn't and caused more stress than inspiration, at which point I quit.

Maybe next year, LOL!

Great idea Mander!

I finished my outline yesterday. Going to block out time this weekend for a first draft....

That's a neat concept, Mander. I met a woman at our local kick-off party that was doing something similar, a series of connected short essays that were semi-autobiographical. First drafts often seem to take me in a different direction than I expected but usually the change is a good one.

In theory I am, because I've been saying for the last several years that I was going to do it and not getting anywhere. But I had no idea what to write about and did no prep work at all, and I didn't start writing anything until yesterday! So my word count is just over 1,000 words.

For me it's about the exercise, rather than the product, so I'm planning to write a series of short stories on a common theme. I've spent so much time lately thinking about style and trying to figure out why it's so hard for me to clean my closet out, so I picked a list of items and I'm going to write a semi-biographical story about whatever comes to mind for each one.

BJ, go for it! NaNoWriMo is all about adapting it so it's helpful for you (IMO).

Ana, I have the same problem. I've gone back and looked at my old NaNo novels and they would need a heavy rewrite to be usable (although I flatter myself that part of the reason is that I've just gotten better at writing in the intervening years - last year I got pneumonia in November and was out of it most of the month). I don't think I'm a 2k a day person, even when I have something already outlined - it's just not that good when I force myself to write that much. I'm sure I write that much total most days, including emails and blog posts and whatever short articles I'm working on, but not usually on one project unless I'm really on a tear.

I write nonfiction and fiction both, but have had more success with nonfiction so far.

Laura, that's my problem with Nano. Unless I have something already outlined, I find that I end up with something fairly unsalvageable at the end (I am definitely not a full-on pantser). I'm going the "rebel" route this year and just upping the daily word count on something that I've already started.

What all do you guys write? Genre fiction or nonfiction, or something else entirely?

Thanks, Laura. I was grocery shopping yesterday and I had a lightbulb moment about a plot point. Hope it pans out. I like it when ideas arrive out of nowhere!

Yay, other NaNoers! I hope your second week has started well. I am way behind in word count - but honestly I've "won" NaNo before (with something way too rambly to be publishable as is) and this year I've got so many projects on the burners I'm not even trying to do it the proper way. I'm just trying to use the word goals as motivation and go to some local meetups and write-ins.

Nadya, one of my critique partners is a big outliner - I'm middle of the road, for short stories I often wing it for a first draft but for longer pieces I'm getting around to needing outlines or I'll spend way too much time revising. Ali and Ana, hope your work is going well too.

Yea, Alicat! I'm trying a new approach and doing a full outline first - got halfway through that yesterday.... My last story got bogged down in having a beginning and an end but no middle, and I'm trying to avoid a repeat!
