Thanks for all of the support and sharing (as always!!). I'm in the software industry so start ups eventually get acquired or go public and then middle sized companies get swallowed by bigger ones. I was the 40th employee at a company that never got bigger than 125 people. We were finally acquired by a massive company with 250,000 employees. 6 months later, that company split into 2 Fortune 50 entities. 24 months later my entire division (15,000 people) is being spun out, and merged with a British company known for being stodgy and just milking products for their maintenance stream and not innovating. End of the line.

I am desperate to get out of this! But, finding a company like the small one I was with for 10 years that is viable and has great solutions is not easy. I got super lucky in 2005. And now that I'm in my mid-50's, I realize that I actually don't want to work as insanely as I did for the last 20 years. I need to figure out something I really love to do. And that I don't need an engineer beside me every day to do it.

I do have a growing passion related to my field - inspiring young people to get into technology, especially cyber security. If anyone out there is in this field and has a thought, I would love to hear!

I'm so glad you had a good ending! I left me last job and then they had a lot of restructuring and leadership changes - became a very stressful place to work for my former colleagues. I likely would have survived it, but the place I came to was probably better (I had a baby, and it would have been awful dealing with work stress with sleep deprivation). I'm glad I got out when I did, but the job I came to wasn't what I was hoping for either...so now I'm on the hunt again after 3 years. Like you, I feel like this job is just helping me get my plan together for the next step; a bit delayed by having a child, but I feel better about my prospects now; better to be running to something than away from something.

You reminded me that when I started at my current company I had some major misgivings and after a couple of weeks started asking around at my previous job to see if I might be able to go back. Well, that was 17 years ago and I'm still here Meanwhile, my previous employer got bought by another company and my former team eventually outsourced to a service provider with quite a similar big company atmosphere to where I am. I tend to be pretty fatalist in general and figure the grass will not be greener... hence the 17 years at one company and counting down the years to retirement.

I think people have to be flexible and willing and able to switch gears quickly now...you never know what the future will bring, stressful as that can be. There doesn't appear to be much security in a lot of fields, so burning bridges is a mistake. My husband has worked for the same three employers in his 30-plus years in the workforce...they keep moving around and starting new companies. It's a small world in some fields.

I'm glad it worked out for you.

Glad that it all worked out! We do benefit from flexing sometimes.

My DH did this decades ago, fairly early in his career. Left a small company where things were very good for him, but not necessarily a great long range prospect. Thought a large company would be the next level step and had a great offer. He came home miserable the first 2 days and within two weeks was back at his former employer. It was a real eye opener to me; you can listen to your inner voice and re-group. He's had a gratifying career and this proved only a little blip, but an informative one.

You sound like a sweet person and a positive for the work atmosphere anywhere you might go.
I'm so glad that the people around you were so supportive and gracious, although really, could there be any gain from being otherwise?

Last job I had (it has been a while) I was laid off because there were a lot of mergers going on and my job was to be centralized. I did not mind as I collected a very nice severance pay and unemployment.About a few months later they were calling me frantically on the phone trying to get me to tell them how to do certain things, when to do it, etc.. (BTW, I was in accounting for a medical education company). I very nicely refused as I told them that I no longer work for them and I have no obligation to tell them how to perform these tasks without getting paid. So, in the end I became a consultant for them, charged them a ton of money for my services, until they were downsized and later sold off. After they were sold, the new owners retained my services until everything was transitioned. Worked out very well for me, not so well for those who laid me off.

So, in the end do not worry. Things will work out the best for you. Good luck!

You have been very lucky indeed, I think that being called back once you have quit occurs very rarely. I agree that in the work environment it's good to maintain good relationships with all.

Laurie, you were very wise to handle both situations with grace. As you said, one can never know what the future holds, and being in the good graces of previous employers is always a good thing.

I was a new hire at our school last year, and our district had to tighten their belt because funding is in short supply. I was let go near the end of the year around mid-day. I pulled myself together, wrote a gracious email thanking my coworkers, and began speaking with friends in the building who knew of openings in nearby districts. As I was driving home that day, I received a call from our super, who had several unexpected resignations. He offered me my job back. As angry as I was, and as much as I would have loved to tell him to put his job somewhere indecent, I thanked him and accepted because this really is the ideal district for me. Fortunately, I am no longer the last hired and my reviews have been excellent, so if cuts come around again I likely will not be on the chopping block. But if I'd reacted in anger and disappointment, I likely would not have been offered my position back.

I very much hope that the next months are good to you and that you find the perfect position. The right fit is out there for you!

Anyone done this? Resigned from a job after 10+ years, joined a very tiny company and within 10 days know it is absolutely the wrong choice? Major gut reaction that starts as a little nudge and escalates to a panic attack? I just did it and now that I'm safely on the other side, invited back (I didn't ask, they came to me) to my old job and resigned from the new one I am calm enough to talk about it. But OMG...so, so stressful. One of the biggest reasons I had not left my the job I started in 2005 was exactly this scenario.

All the reasons I wanted to leave are the same, but I feel like I bought myself 6 more months to make a better decision. And I am welcomed back, which is always so nice. And I will work harder for those 6 months because I am grateful.

But I really need to sort out my future.

Both sides in this situation were super lovely to me - no anger, lots of kindness and gratitude and genuine wishes for all the best. Very big reminders of the best way to behave, always. Feeling pretty lucky tonight.
