Hi Anne --

You're so welcome; it'll be fun to see where your sewing projects end up!

Oh: I had a wide elastic waist put in my Ultimate PMS Skirt for the ultimate in comfort on days I can't face my zips and buttons, ha.

Vix, now I have had a chance to look at your photos - I love them. Love those flounces on the bottom of skirts 3 and 10-11. And I have loved your PMS skirt since the first time I saw it (BTW how is it constructed at the waistline? Zip?)

Laura - the fabric is pretty stiff

Steph - nice hearing that I have slim legs (only because my chunky thighs are covered!
I think you might be right about flowy fabric. I do have a midi length flowy skirt which I have showed on YLF before but can't seem to find the picture of - will try to take a new pic.

Thanks again for all the help - will post again when the hemming is done

PS sorry for late response - DH had computer out on a day/evening trip yesterday

Thanks so much for the extral feedback, especially from Vix and Steph. Will get back to you in more detail a bit later as I need to rush out and I can't look at all Vix's photos very quickly right now as it is the end of the month. Vix I really appreciate your uploading them. I think you are right that we have lots of similarities in body type and having had a look at your blog, I also think my style preferences are quite in line with yours!

I actually like 1-2 a lot; I think it looks fresh and new and not too clunky or awkward. The cord looks pretty drapey and not stiff but that may just be the nature of photos. (What pattern did you use - it looks like it fits you really well.)

**most of pics are older/blog outtakes, sorry for bad quality!**

Hi Anne --

Love that you are out there whipping up items to suit! Great skirt, and I'm with the majority who voted for #5 (above-knee and tapered).

I like Steph's thought about "right idea, wrong fabric" as you keep pondering midis.

IIRC you and I share that Rectangle-y, shorter-legged-for-proportion thing? If it helps, I thought I'd share some of my findings about various knee-length or longer hems -- consider or disregard as desired!

1) Bridgette Raes (Style Rx book) points out that wider skirts like A-lines visually shorten the leg line, while narrower skirts do the opposite.

2) However, I and other practicality-minded folks know that tapered + below-the-knee is harder to walk in than tapered + above-knee OR flowy + below-knee!

[Stretch and slits only take one so far...something to think about if you want a particular skirt for active days.]

3) Personally, I've found that movement-friendly, very very *slight* A-lines or straight-with-a -flounce (which work better for my lack of hips + shorter legs) look best on me mid-kneecap.

The contrast with (real or "hosiery'd) leg color can make a difference, too, so you should definitely experiment!

Pics 1-2: Ultimate PMS skirt in semi-action...back gives best sense of skirt shape (semi-structured: light knit overlay + heavy jersey underlining)

Pic 3: Tan flared skirt

Pic 4: Ancient LBD, had hem shortened from 3 inches longer to just belong kneecap a few years ago (and really could have gone a bit shorter to be more flattering, but I like the retro vibe of this length so I sometimes compromise)

4) Tapered or straight -- again, not always the most practical for movement:

Pic 5-6: "Straight pencil" grey tropical wool interview skirt, hits right below kneecap and has double vents for better movement (see above re my knowing this isn't my "ideal" length)

Pic 7-8: New crazy-print jersey dress with tapered/tulip skirt, had shorted from just below kneecap to mid-cap/back-of-knee "bend" because it really is more flattering on me

5) Old-school alternative to "midi" definition -- more of that mid-calf thang -- really only semi-works on me with a flared bottom and total monochromatic scheme from waist down!

Pic 9: Awesome Life mag cover from 1970 ;)
Pic 10-11: My pretty awesomely drapey charcoal wool skirt

Accck, photo overload!

If you want still *more* examples of longer (and shorter) skirt lengths on me, I have some of an asymmetrical dress on this YLF thread:

I was going to vote for the knee-length tapered as well. I know it's too late, but just chiming in as more positive reinforcement.

I wouldn't say that midi length isn't for you, but what struck me about this skirt in midi-length was that, even when tapered, it seemed that there was a lot of fabric near the bottom of the skirt. You have such great, slim legs, that it seemed out of proportion with your body. I wonder if a midi-length skirt in a fabric that isn't quite as structured or stiff would be better? Maybe a lighter-weight cotton or some kind of flowy fabric? Or perhaps a bias-cut midi length skirt would work well? I don't really know anything about sewing, so my instincts could be VERY off.

Thanks for your input everyone. I am going to go for tapered and shorter, as this is more versatile, as well as being the majority opinion ( my opinion too).
I'll try out midi length in something else!

Nice job making the skirt Anne! Of all the options you showed, I think the tapered above the knee version is the most flattering, and will look adorable with flats. I also think you could wear the midi version of the skirt if it's tapered. For myself, I find it hard to make a-line skirts look anything but dowdy.

It's a pretty skirt Anne.
I think if you go with the longer length you should add a heel of some sort...the shorter would look great with flats.
I know that doesn't answer your question:(
