So, I have purchased these two so far. Sandals, $0. Dress, $34. I love that the dress is racerback, midi, can be dressed up or down, and will have a life after vacation. Thanks for this idea, Lisap.

Angie, I love the color of the JCrew dress but I don't love the crispness of poplin for this vacation. (It's the same material as my olive dress, and I even find it stiff for daily wear around town.) I really want material with an easier hand -- and in any event, I am set for daytime dresses. I'd love a fun dinner dress in that color.

The black dress is sold out. But I think I want a bright color or print. Thank you, though!

Lisa, thank you for pointing out that the palm print dress is poly. Also, it is lined. I think I need simple, one layer dressing for this heat. So that's off the table.

I like the Georgiana sandals better.

Take a striped dress of some sort.

I also like Angie's dress selections and see them as working well with your aesthetic.

I thought about that WHBM palm print dress myself, since I had a little festival of that color. However I passed because I'm not a fan of poly in the summer. I also bought a little neckerchief in that J Crew Wild print, and would have been tempted by the sold-out pants.

Cover ups, either tunic or skirt are key. Tory Burch typically has fab expensive ones (I bought a few things from there when my husband and I did a similar sort of just the two of us trip to Aruba), and Athleta has very decent choices as well (that also include some UPF sunscreening tops that you may benefit from.) I also bought a nice two piece striped swim suit from a place that Zibbets recommended and was extremely pleased with it.

I'm exited about your special trip. How blissful.

How about something like this - and the black for dressy. As fab over cropped jeans.

And these are AMAZING walking sandals. I have walked Sam for miles in the white pair.

Yes, Tulum is very casual and you will live in your dresses and swim suits. I see you are sorted on many of your questions. Regarding the dressy dress I think the Jcrew, Trina Turk, or Jade would be best. The reason is that almost all of the restaurants are completely outside so they will be very hot and when you factor in potential sunburn I think you will want something loose and breezy.

I understand! My vacation packing is completely different than dressy event packing... The good thing about tropical clothing is you can fit a lot more in your bag.

Update: I ordered the first pair of flat sandals from Amazon (cost: $0). I also ordered two cover ups from JCrew on sale ($35 and $25) to try. Thank you, Sara L, for emphasizing the importance of these. I don't even own one. :)

Una, I think I can say for sure I am not as light a packer as you - still, knowing what you would pack is extremely helpful. I'll probably increase everything by one (one more dress, one more pair of shoes, 1-2 more tops...). I will have fun dressing on vacation - not dressing up but dressing in fun things. So I will want to bring them.

I'm still thinking through the dresses. Right now in my mind, the WHBM dress has a slight edge because it is a good price and might fit well. I also like the JCrew floral because of the crazy print and because I KNOW it will fit. I am afraid the embroidery will make the Velvet dress stiff and also itchy on sun-kissed skin.

Please send any and all other thoughts!!!

Thank you!
Vivian

Tulum is amazing. But honestly you will not need tons of dresses unless you are one of those people who likes to change two or three times a day. I sometimes do that just to be able to wear my warm weather stuff. Or if you're doing fancy every night. I am an extra-light packer, so for a week I'd bring two dresses plus one cover-up type for the beach, two pairs of shorts, three or 4 tees, a pair of linen pants, an all-purpose light topper and swimsuits. I'd bring my Teva flip-flops and a pair of nice sandals, maybe sneakers for the ruins. Anything else is gravy!

Ha, I'm the opposite - I love all the tropical print dresses - they so beachy and fun to me. The Velvet one looks hotter than the others. I like the WHBM and Trina Turk the best. I would suggest bringing plenty of beach coverups. I have found on beach vacations that I wear those and swimsuits more than anything else and get really sick of the coverups if I only bring 1 or 2 for a week.

Also, I've been to the Tulum ruins on a day trip and thought it was fascinating.

It will be so hot there - I think you are right in that you won't need anything very dressy at all - unless you plan to be indoors for a special dinner. You can also shop there of course - I find it fun to bring home at least one or two clothing items when I go on a trip. I like the jcrew dress and the Trina Turk the most out of these. I would probably lean towards pure comfort in shoes - maybe Keen or Teva sandals. But I can't stand a shoe with no support or cushion when walking for miles. If you just want to bring a light pair for nightime dining, then the sandals you show look pretty good to me.

Oh Tulum looks GORGEOUS!!! (Had to google it....looks like my kind of place!)

Of the dresses, I like the flutter sleeve dress and the Velvet dress. Last year, I went on vacation to Maldives and stayed at a fancy resort. I packed day dresses for lunch and slightly dressier dresses for dinner and practically lived in my swimsuits rest of the time.

From my experience , the dressy dresses were unnecessary. As you mention, I could actually wear a pretty caftan over swimsuit for lunch and didn't really need to dress up. No one else was dressed up. The 'day dresses' would've been good enough for dinner too. Everything was uber casual and tshirt dresses were PERFECT. All you need is some pretty necklaces & bracelets for that beachy vibe, and even denim cut-offs with a silky tank would do just fine!!!

Flat sandals - a good call! I prefer the first pair with 2 straps and a back strap.....looks more 'open', summery and dainty.....perfect for a beach vacay

Lisa, I agree: the Velvet is my favorite too and the most me -- although I am a tiny bit tempted by the WHBM one (the cut looks good for a small chest). And a black tank dress sounds tres chic. Must find -- if I do, I would get that instead of the JCrew stripe. I have the casual day covered, I think. I'd like another good choice to wear in the evening, and that sounds superb. Have to search that out. Thank you!!!!

Suz, good point about the embroidery. I may have to order the Velvet to see how stiff it is. And the white silk from the anniversary trip just might be too dressy. I think this is the kind of place where I could probably pack one caftan and live in that. No heels, no silk; most dining is al fresco, etc.

First, how lovely that you and Mr. will get a great vacation together!

Second, packing! Fun! You're bringing a great selection of dresses, it sounds like (love the sounds of the navy silk).

The J. Crew should work really well on you.

As for the dressier one...hmmm. What about your anniversary dress from a few years ago? It is SOOOOOO gorgeous! !

But, if new is the order of the day, then I would love to see you in the Trina Turk -- it is so much fun 70s glam! I would also be curious to see the J. Crew off the shoulder one, though I feel like that would be a one season wonder. Having said that...so what? That's what summer dresses are for, and you like to move things out of your wardrobe smartly to make way for the new anyway. So why not?

The Velvet could also be great but I wonder about whether embroidery makes it stiffer and therefore less comfortable in heat.

ETA -- try the sandals on. Both are great so it's all down to comfort/ looks on the foot. For me, both would be too flat, but that's me and my feet! My version is the Seychelles.

Well, I'm useless: first of all I had to look up Tulum. I thought maybe it was in Greece or Spain - what do I know? And I am no good at packing lists for vacations - so there's that too. (I'm worried about a capsule for a 6 day business trip coming up in a month too - ugh).

I love the Velvet dress - a lot , but have to say the other more tropically prints are not doing it for me. I'm having a hard time picturing you in them.

I love both pair of flat sandals, and agree that this is absolutely the way to go . That colour will work with everything, and can dress up or down. What about a black linen tank dress, or black long knit dress?

The striped JCrew is cute - although would just be a day dress, right?

Hi all,

I'm trying to do the right thing and work on a vacation capsule well in advance of my vacation, which takes place in a month. DH and I are going to Tulum for a week, and it's our first extended vacation on our own after 27 years of marriage, which is kind of amazing. (We've tended to travel with our daughters.) We're very excited.

So, it's going to be HOT and quite casual; think beachy wear. I'm expecting to live in a swimsuit and dress most of the time although I am bringing some shorts and a pair of drawstring linen pants.

So... I have 2 day dresses I will definitely take: a sleeveless navy washable silk button-down, and a citron short-sleeved t-shirt dress. I may or may not add the gray linen short-sleeved milkmaid dress, and/or the short-sleeved gray lightning Gap t-shirt dress from last year.

I'd like two new barer dresses -- one casual and one dressier if I can get them cheaply enough. For casual, I am thinking about the striped JCrew tank dress ($60) below. ETA: See below for the long black sleeveless dress I purchased.

I need flat sandals for everyday ... again trying to be budget-conscious. These must be good for dresses and shorts. I have mostly a clean aesthetic but in summer a bit of boho does peek out. These are from Amazon because right now I have a $60 credit on Amazon plus about $100 in Amex rewards points that I can use towards the purchase, making them essentially free. This fits the budget. ETA: I purchased the Georgiana.

ETA: I purchased the two coverups below, on sale at JCrew (extra 40% off), to try.

The dressier dress is where I still need help. Several are collected below. Your thoughts?

Any other suggestions for a tropical vaca?
