It's really a crapshoot everywhere, but I do remember trying on two absolutely identical skirts in the same size (I did it because there was some defect on the one I initially tried on) and the 2nd one was a good size bigger! I don't sew, but I've read that when a lot of sheets of fabric are stacked on top of each other, when cut, the top piece can be almost a size smaller than the bottom piece. Considering the "quality" and speed of production, that must happen quite often.

As far as the Loft's quality, I'm not happy with them lately. Adding this to the fact that too many of my coworkers also shop there, I've pretty much given it up, short of some petite basics. The sweaters are of pretty low quality. So are Ann Taylor's, btw.

Thank you Trix, it's very helpful to know how sizes worked for you in relation to the chart. This what I need to know.

Funny you should ask, I just bought some items from LOFT -- my first purchase there in years. FWIW, I'm usually on the large side of 6P at other retailers (J. Crew, Ann Taylor, BR) and take a MP except in a few things; by the LOFT size chart, I'm between 6P and 8P. My try-ons from LOFT were within this range -- a few jackets that felt on the verge of too snug in the shoulders in 6P and some that fit the shoulders perfectly. I also tried on some SP tanks that I could fit into but that felt a bit snug. But then, I'm a "round" hourglass who probably carries a bit of weight up top, which can throw off my sizing; I also suspect I'm older than the typical LOFT customer, as I have a bigger bust/hip measurement for the waist size. Hope this helps -- good luck with your shopping!

Shiny, thanks for your experience, and I do usually need petites. Thanks StacyMcGill, that helps with the sizing decision. Thanks Gigi and Laura, it's good to know they run either true to size or a little big. I think I'll be trying a small petite in several items and see what happens. Hmm after I check how returns are.

I agree, probably a small. My experience with Loft is that most things run a tad big. I have not had quality problems with any of their items but maybe I'm just a picky shopper.

Loft quality can be on the cheap side, unfortunately. It depends on the item. You'll find lots of complaints on the forum about Loft. :^(

As for fit, I would say that they are true to size, maybe just a tad big. I don't know what size you would order for a 6. I have not ordered any items from them that I thought ran small. Everything has either been true to size for me or else too big.

I think a size 6 would be a small at LOFT. I'm a 10 on top and consistently wear LOFT mediums.

Yes, LOFT sizing is very inconsistent, within store but also online. It can be very frustrating. In my experience, the items online may not even be the same quality as the same item found in the store. I have been burned in the past on that one, i.e., I might buy a pair of pants in the store, then a few days later, decide to duplicate and order the very same thing online, and what I receive not only fits differently but is made out of lower quality material. That was a few years back and things may have changed since then, but I wouldn't know, since I stopped ordering online as a result.

As for which you should order, I usually go with petites, so if you're regular sized I may not be of much help. But I can say that in recent years LOFT has changed their sizing a bit, so you may be safe sizing down rather than up.

Good luck!

Thank you Texstyle and Karie. I'm still pondering. It would be so nice to get the size right the first time on my limited budget!

Their sizing can be inconsistent, but from my experience a size 6 is usually a small in Loft sizing (I also wear a 6). It also depends on how you want it to fit - for a looser fit, a M might be better.

I'm an 8-10 and usually go for M there, unless it's a tee, then sometimes I go up to large for comfort/slouch. Quality has varied but mostly I've had good luck - I always use gentle cool cycle on wash and low delicate cycle on dry and sometimes just line dry things.

Cute cardi!

Hello Fabbers,
I've been searching posts to find opinions on The Loft quality and sizing and still need some help, as the posts I found were old and maybe things have changed since then. I've never bought anything from there before so I don't know my size. However, I want to try two things that may be HEWIs and help fill some wardrobe holes. So, if I'm a size 6 on their size chart, do I go for a small, or a medium, in the garment? Any help or opinions appreciated.
