If you want a lighter-weight scarf, I would maybe try 100% silk. I have a pashmina that is pashmina wool and silk blend, and it is soft but also kind of heavy.

I like how it looks on you and the extra dimension it adds to your outfit, but I understand the discomfort. I agree with the advice to not give up but look for a very lightweight scarf in a breathable fabric. Heavy ones get on my nerves too, and I tend to take them off for a while during the day for a break.

I am short with a short neck so with bulkier scarves I usually fold them lengthwise several times to take down the bulk and make a narrow tube or I tie opposing corners together to make an infinity scarf. I tuck edges in more than I fluff up! Finally, they never sit too close to my neck, esp. in front. I certainly don't want my chin touching the thing.

I agree with everyone else who suggested trying a lighter weight scarf before giving up. I love scarves, wear them lots, and am still stymied by my one and only heavy pashmina type scarf.

The colours are beautiful on you. Maybe you could try it on a lightweight coat? One tip for tying it is to take it by one corner and let it fall before you put it on. That way the ends are pointed not straight, and seems more flattering to me.

Sorry to hear you abandoned your scarf experiment! I think it added a lovely texture to your outfit, but if you don't feel fab you don't feel fab!

I like Inge's suggestion of wearing it a little lower, infinity-style. Or switching to some lighter-weight scarves.

I love scarves, but I have to say that I don't love those thicker wool kinds. I think you should try again with a softer, thinner material.

I learned to wear scarves from a YouTube video. Search "Wendy's Look Book". She has a very cute fast motion video but then she has others where she breaks each tie method down and talks you through it. I actually set up my iPad in front of my mirror...watched each tie and then tried it several times til I mastered it. I now have about six methods I like the best depending on the scarf and my mood.

Don't give up! They are so fun...I just think you tried to wear an outdoors type scarf all day, no wonder you felt it was bulky and hot.

It is off. I just could not stand it any longer. This scarf is a pashmina/silk blend and really soft. I think it is just too bulky for me. Thank you for the help, ladies.

Love what the scarf adds to your outfit! I'm a scarf person and wear them frequently. There is a website scarves.net that has instructions on tying and wearing a variety of different types and sizes of scarves. You can also buy scarves and they have a newsletter with great ideas.

That being said some days I simply can't stand to have one wrapped around my neck either so I just drape it for contrast.
Hope you enjoy experimenting with your scarves!

Hi Deb,

I was failing at scarves until I found some very lightweight cotton ones that had enough fabric to drape nicely when tied and looped infinity style the way Inge mentions.

With a bulk sweater I usually wear a thinner silk scarf around my neck only tied with in a square knot. My bulkier scarves are worn with more fitted tops. I am fairly tall, but too much bulk seems to be a bit overwhelming.

It does look loose, but I have found during the day they can move into choking position. Sometimes a scarf pin works to hold it in place, and sometimes not.

Love the check pattern and the colours in the scarf, Deb, it looks great with your outfit. Hm, I see you are already wearing the scarf a little looser, so it's not super tight around your neck to begin with. Is it a heavy fabric? If so, a lighter weight one may feel less suffocating to you?

I also like to wear my scarves the way Angie has tied hers here, i.e. creating an infinitiy scarf by tying two ends together and then wrapping the scarf around your neck twice or three times (depending on how large it is). You can adjust this, and wear it a little looser, so that there's more "room to breathe" if you prefer that.
http://youlookfab.com/2012/07/.....user-look/

So I posted my WIW for today and feel it is too blah. I am working from home, and all of a sudden the light dawns, I have two scarves I found when doing my last closet revamp. A winter white cashmere and a turquoise print. I decided to try the print. I have no clue how to wear a scarf! It feels like I am being slowly suffocated by a wad of fabric. Is this normal? I decided I will force myself to wear it all day, or until I feel like I want to break something, to see if I am able to get over this feeling. Please help with any and all suggestions.
