I love Diesel. I always forget it exists but I often like things I see from them. Used to shop there often when I lived in a different city. Not sure who carries their stuff here but I bet a lot of places do--I will have to check into that!

The sweater, boots, and skirt are all Diesel. I think I am the only one here who shops there (besides Angie). Their quality is usually fab and they have good sales. Some of their stuff is wild, but a lot of it is basics with a lot of attention to detail.

Well. It turns out that I have four times as much money under the sofa cushions as I thought and I haven't touched it in a few years. Hmm.

Thanks for chiming back in, Ariadne, especially about the tights issue. I hadn't heard of those tights but they sound very practical for frigid winters. Figures the Danes would know what to do there. Also thanks regarding the tips about taking a few minutes to start the day put together. By the way, I am way ahead of you on the bad front, trust me. I think DH already has a gift lined up

The skirt is stretchy and machine-washable? Then I vote get that for sure and the plaid shirt and mustard cardi as well. They are gorgeous (where did you find them?) and will look great together and mixed with other items. I'd definitely get the watch if you can swing it (or finagle it as a birth gift from DH? Now I'm being bad).

I do wear skirts and dresses a LOT as a MOTG (with thick opaque tights like the MP wool and cotton ones, or with leggings that I treat as tights--worn with socks and tall boots in winter, or sockless with flats or sandals in spring/summer) and find them extremely comfortable as long as they are not restrictive. My only reservation was that and washability, both of which are non-issues--yay!

It's great that you are thinking and planning ahead to make sure YOU and your style are taken care of when you become a mom. I've found that taking a little bit of time to dress comfortably but nicely, do my hair, and wear makeup (about a 5-10 minute process for me, all told) makes a huge, huge difference in my entire day. I am happier and more "together" and that's as good for my babies as it is for me. Plus, it means I can dash out the door for some fresh air at a moment's notice. Well, not quite a moment--usually I still have to feed and change and possibly re-dress the kids, get their coats and shoes on, haul out the stroller, etc.--but if I had to dress myself too we'd never go anywhere

Sounds like you made some great decisions and you've left yourself some fun money for other purchases!

If you have any nursing-specific clothing questions, feel free to post them to the forum or PM me. I made quite a few initial purchases of nursing-specific items that I got sick of very quickly, then learned which "regular" clothes could be used for that purpose (same goes for pumping if you will be doing that as well).

My vote is get it all too. The watch will last you for many years. You will need comfy clothes to wear as you transition from your maternity to your regular wardrobe. It is like a 4th trimester. You really can't wear your maternity clothes anymore but your old clothes still don't fit! Ugh. It can be a frustrating time. The only thing I thought was the daytime clutch wouldn't make much sense because you're going to be carrying a diaper bag most of the time.... but actually it is nice to just be able to pop your clutch into the diaper bag when you are out with the baby, and then be able to use just the clutch when you are out on your own.

On 1 and 2.) Okays, so I am thinking the sneaks, especially considering they are on sale, are a go, and this leaves over some moola for something else, which I THOUGHT would be the plaid shirt, because I found a nice inexpensive one online last night, but today my size is sold out!! Bitterness. Boobs get bigger when you are nursing, right?? If so, then testing the smaller of two possible sizes is just not going to cut it, right? Especially since pregnancy has made my ribs and shoulders weirdly bigger. Although I am hoping that will go away.

On 3.) I still really want that red clutch, but at a minimum it would get a lot less use in the coming year than anything else on this list, so that one goes to the backburner. Okay, I feel pretty good about that.

On 4.) The watch, hmm. Maybe someone can be induced to give me a Christmas present like this.

On 5.) The clothes--so hard to turn away from these because I have been thinking about them for two months. I was thinking maybe they will go on sale, but rather I see that sizes are selling out. With the skirt, I see your arguments that it might not be the first thing I want to throw on for a day at home or some winter outdoor fun-time, but on the other hand it is stretchy and machine washable, so I am torn. It seems so on trend and so me. I hadn’t even considered the excellent point that the cardigan would be good for breastfeeding. I am really befuddled (and frightened) about what dressing for breastfeeding is going to entail. Mama-business is hard. The clothes specifically designed for it are probably okay for sometimes, but I can’t see myself wearing that kind of stuff exclusively. I bought two cheap tops for the hospital and my sissy is sending me a supposedly nice looking one from Target. I’ll see how it’s going. I think I will keep waiting and praying for sales on these. sniffle.

Angie, thanks for the compliment to my taste. I will interpret this comment to mean pick one of these things out of a hat and see if I feel disappointed after that.

N-Marie, thanks for the thoughtful response. It is my first and I have never been around a newborn, so I am really unsure what I am getting into. The sneakers are available from the Germany online Nike store, but the style is called Victoria, so maybe you can find them somewhere else. Thanks for your support about wanting to keep putting in the effort to present myself well. I am sure it will have to become a more and more active effort to keep it up. Also great point about the cardi being nursing friendly. I hadn’t even thought of that.

RoseandJoan, that is an interesting way of looking at it because when you say it that way, it makes me want the watch, whereas everyone else’s comment make me push the watch to the back of the line. I could throw the watch on with anything and feel a little pepped up. I am really excited about the sneaker look too, but that requires a coordinated outfit, and also, I wasn’t much of a sneaker-on-the-go wearer until late this pregnancy. I guess considering that I plan to leave the house a lot just for walks/fresh air, sneakers will be good, although depending on the weather maybe I will be in winter boots or water-proof boots a lot. Yup, putting it that way makes me think watch.

Goldenpig, I ordered a conservative diaper bag since daddy will do some SAH time too, and he can’t be seen with a too feminine bag Thanks for the tip about the carrier. My friend is lending me hers, but maybe I should look around and see which one would really work the best for me. I ordered a diaper bag that can hang off the stroller because I hate carrying things. I know, not what a lady should say who is about to be a mom.

ClaraT, thanks for the practical advice. I am really having a hard time envisioning how my life will be, so I need to hear it.

Ariadne, good point about hose. I hadn’t thought that far ahead about it. Hee hee, I used to baby sit for a baby that puked all the time. Never touched him without a towel in arm’s reach or preferably covering me. Fortunately at the time he only drank milk. Thanks for the baby carrier tip.

Claire, this exercise is both helping me narrow things down and making me scheme to see how I actually could get everything in the end. Thanks for the practical tips. I think I will never fully give up my current watch in any case. It just feels a part of me.

Cheryl, I am very casual too and I could use both of these for work as well.

SaraL, thanks for the warning. You know, I am starting to feel like one gets a lot more "real" information about motherhood in forums than from the people you actually know.

Decision, preliminary:
Oh gosh. So I ordered the shoes, which was half my budget, but not the shirt.(RoseandJoan still makes me wonder though if should tap into some more deeply salted away fun money for the watch.) Yup, I am a habitual hoarder of the metaphorical coins under the couch. It gives me a sense of freedom.

I agree with the other posters. I think the shoes are a great find and you'll quite a bit of use out of them. I also think finding washable items that still fit your style and make you feel good is essential. You still want to feel like yourself even though you have a new baby. One other item - be prepared for everyone you meet to only notice the baby - all of sudden, you become wallpaper.

Scarlet you look so good! I love that cardi you are modeling. I vote yay to the cool sneakers and a longer, midi length skirt like the one you posted. Skip the oversized watch and just call your two-toned one *iconic* (that's what I tell myself about mine, lol). Plus the big one might be cumbersome and scratch the baby. I'd skip the clutch too. Even if you slip it inside a larger tote, if might never get seen. I'd have fun picking out a large bag that doesn't look like a diaper bag. There are some great messenger-sized bags out there. Ditto everything that has been said about staying covered while bending and stretching and being loaded down with baby equipment. Knits are your friend! Of course, if money is no object, get everything! It's all fab. Just trying to help you narrow your list down.

Everyone's said everything I would have said! Is it your first baby? The clutch will not be practical for any outings you do with the baby (which may happen sooner and more often than you anticipated--fresh air is a great cure for a fussy baby and/or a stir-crazy mama) UNLESS you plan to stash it in the diaper bag or in the stroller. The pencil skirt is lovely, but I agree that something a bit longer and stretchier will probably be much more useful (unless it has some stretch?) You will be spending a LOT of time on the floor and hose generally cannot stand up to that kind of abuse. I also highly suggest you make sure anything you buy is easy to wash and otherwise care for. You may get a puker like I did (twice) and be covered in spit up all the time.

I'll put in another vote for a baby carrier--my kids lived in them and I particularly adored our plain black Beco Gemini buckle carrier this time around.

I think there is good advice here already. I agree with others, the clutch is fun, but not practical when you are juggling your new bundle of joy and all the accessories, especially in the beginning. I vote the sneakers, you will be running around a lot after he/she gets moving. If there is room for two choices, the plaid shirt is my next vote, it looks fun and casual and would be great for a day at the playground!

All the above comments have good advice.

Anything you think you might get: Put it on. Grab a bag of groceries. Drop something on the floor. Pick it up. Drop it again. Pick it up again. Still comfortable? Buy the item in question. You will be bending over to get stuff off the floor/pick up your child/ pick up thrown toys etc. for the next 3 years.

Love the shirt--if you plan to nurse, for all shirts etc. make sure you can access what you need to access without completely undressing or pulling up your shirt. Scarves are *great* for modest nursing in public. That red-and-black shirt looks perfect.

N marie has some great advice. I would think the fun purple sneakers would be the most used out of all of the things you listed. I wouldn't go for the clutch--you are going to have your hands full with the baby and all the baby stuff. How about a stylish diaper bag instead--there are a lot of fun fashiony options now. And do you have a baby carrier? I could not have lived without my Ergo to wear my baby/toddler and still have hands free. I think they may have some prints and/or colors. There are a lot of pretty newborn wraps as well. Skirts may not be that practical if you are down on the floor and bending over a lot, unless you put some bike shorts or capris underneath. The plaid shirt and watch look great too. Good luck with the upcoming baby! So excited for you!

I would like to ask you; you are at home with the baby wearing your jeans and a well fitting t-shirt, you decide to leave the house and add an accessory, which of the above would make you feel most like Scarlet?

Congratulations on the soon to arrive baby! Apologies if this is not your first and all this advice is stuff you already know. I have a 14-month-old so the last year for me has been a learning experience in the challenges of MOTG style.

#1: I love those sneakers! I think they're great. Where did you find them on sale? I'm a bit tempted to get them myself... I love that plum color.

#2: Personally, I think I would really struggle with a daytime clutch from a practical MOTG standpoint. If you have a use for it when you are not MOTG-ing, then by all means get it (and those are very nice clean, modern ones you've picked ) I ended up with an oversized purse that I use as a diaper bag, and I often end up with baby on one hip, purse on the other shoulder, and either a booster seat, or a picnic blanket, or a shopping bag with park toys, etc also on the non-baby side...Keeping hands free to open doors and catch baby in case she decides to make a sudden lunge in the downward direction.

#3: I've been seeing this look in the blogs, etc too and I really like it- such a great MOTG look! I'm also on the hunt for a similar shirt for myself.

#4: I'm on team no-watch so no opinions there

#5: I have quite a few casual jersey skirts that can be thrown on quickly and can withstand a beating and frequent washing. A few MOTG thoughts - can you lean over, get down on your knees and sit on the ground in this skirt without over-exposure? My MOTG skirts are longer (slightly past the knee) for these reasons - other shorter skirts I reserve for when I have an extra set of hands on deck. As for post-partum wear, I vote for comfort (stretchy) over "proper," you will spend a lot if time with a baby asleep on top of you so you want to be as comfy as possible. The cardi looks nursing-friendly too, if that's part of your plan.

A few extra thoughts:
- Shoe size for some people goes up 1/2 size or more during pregnancy and does nto go back (this was not the case for me). Great excuse to buy new shoes though!
- I think you should take every opportunity you can during and after pregnancy to reward yourself and make yourself feel stylish and pulled together. Having a baby can feel like you are losing your identity and it takes continuous effort to be intentional about how you present yourself.

I love everything you posted. I think the sneaks are great as long as the rest of your outfit is streamlined. I don't know how well a clutch would work when you are carrying baby and diaper bag though--but would be nice for a mom's day out. It was a long time ago, but I recall wearing my maternity clothes until I went back to work---three months, maybe. The stress and nursing seemed to help me get back into shape. Of course, it's twelve years later and I think the baby weight found me again! These look like fun updates for your MOTG style--they seem practical AND stylish!

By interest, do you mean do I peruse them online roughly every two weeks?
I think they are a little spendy at the moment though. We have had to buy so much stuff for the baby/apartment lately!

Scarlet, you have a great handle on your style and I have no doubt you'll be back in your usual clothes soon. The main issue for me as a new mom was having clothes that were washable, easy to bend and move around for picking up car seat and stroller and blah blah blah, and that covered the baby belly. I think you're right on track with these new items, which seem like you anyway, MOTG or not.

If you want one fab thing, I'd get a comfortable pair of shoes that you adore. Any interest in the Ash low-wedge sneakers?

So exciting!

Pretty soon baby should arrive, and then I will be on leave for several months before returning to work. I am really looking forward to getting back into “normal clothes”, and it has been REALLY HARD to sit on my hands this fall because there is so much out there that I love. Obviously with the baby and the holidays coming up, spending money on me comes low on the list, but nevertheless I have salted away some fun money (leftover from my birthday this summer) that is burning a hole in my pocket. According to my mother I will need to buy some jeans a size larger than usual until my body gets back to normal, but I plan to do that as cheaply as possible, so I am not counting it.

Of the following cravings I could have one thing:

1.) Sneakers--I know a lot of people here don’t like the athletic trend, but I do, and I think it can be done well, like this blogger here (http://www.fash-n-chips.com/20.....fit-1.html). I do already have black Converse and black hightops, but I just like the idea of maroon... These ones are on sale, so if I buy them I could also buy an infinity scarf or some other fun item.

2.) Day time clutch--still really wanting to try out this look but I haven’t felt confident to order something online. I prefer to shop for bags in person and I haven’t seen one IRL that I am in love with. I do think all of these online options would work though. Of course I won’t be out and about too much in the coming months, but sometimes I will.

3.) Red and black checked shirt--easy to wear all winter with other black wardrobe items. I just love this inspiration photo. I haven’t found a real life version yet.

4.) Oversized watch--the ones that I like are pricey and I just can’t decide how long this trend will last. Currently I wear a “classic” two-tone lady’s watch from Tissot that I am attached to probably because I bought it myself when it was special to be able to do so and because I wear it every day, so I am accustomed to it, but honestly it looks dated right now :(

5.) New clothes--I really liked this athletic-inspired pencil skirt, and I thought this drapey gold cardi was quite fetching. Probably I “need” the skirt more than another cardigan/top. The gold color just felt really right on me and would go with my new boots. I tried the cardigan on around 6 months but decided it would fit for about a week before my belly continued its exponential trajectory. The skirt was too tight in the waist, but would probably be forgiving post-partum. On the other hand my mother maintains I should wear proper (non-elastic clothes) to help me get back into form, which kind of makes sense.

Does any of this grab you or make sense to you? Or am I just a little stir crazy due to months of self-restraint and I shouldn’t consider any of this? Since I feel so limited, I am having a hard time zeroing in on just one fab thing.
