I'm thinking you need more of a 13 or 13.5 inch shaft but it also depends entirely on the style of the boot.

Every site I looked at had a different shaft measurement for these so I just gave up and ordered them. Where should a tall boot hit on a shortie like me?

I ended up ordering these:

http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7428701/c/157014.html

In the "coffee" color, which looks like more of a burgundy. My favorite color! And that way I won't feel so guilty about the tall black boots, since they'll still get some wear.

Oooh, that's a hell of a price. I don't think I want brown, though...I think I'd prefer either black or possibly red. I think they'd go with more things in my wardrobe.

I have no experience with La Canadienne, but have been thinking about these
http://www.6pm.com/la-canadienne-sasha-brown
is that along the lines of your criteria (not red, but other than that)?

Do you have Doc Marten's? I have some with the thick rubber sole and they work great in our snow and slush and for traction. I just add a wool sock.

I don't know about the waterproofness of the LC, or Docs for that matter, but they should be built for some rough weather.

Wellies are a great cheap alternative but are not warm at all. Last snow we had i wore them with welly socks and thick hiking socks and my feet were still cold.

I think if you get frequent snowy winters it's definately worth investing in proper snow boots I can't comment on brands from experience, but i know others have discussed la canadienne so hopefully someone experienced will chime in but i think that's the way to go x

Before i read your post properly and comment i just wanted to say please wear the hiking boots while you are looking for more stylish boots. Who cares if they are gear it's better to have unfashionable shoes than a broken back! x

Edit- i wore my hiking boots in the last snow we had then changed when i got to work x

I've been mulling over getting new boots, and today pushed me over the edge. It's been a snowier winter than usual here in Northern VA, and today for the second time this winter, I fell in the daycare parking lot and landed flat on my rear. (Thank goodness both times it was AFTER I dropped off my girls!) It's my own fault for wearing my Born Kelles - but the only boots I have with traction are 100% gear, they're Thinsulate-lined hiking boots.

So I want to get a pair of boots that can stand up to the snow and ice but still look stylish. I have a couple of options, can you all help me think this through?

I have a pair of tall black boots I wear for pant-tucking (they're too wide in the calf for skirts). I don't love them, though; they're pre-YLF and they wrinkle at the ankle, and the heel is a bit too high for MOTG pant-tucking. But they're not terrible. So my choices are:

- Sell or consign the black boots and get a new pair of something like La Canadiennes. I'd need waterproof, non-slippery, flat or low heel, and probably no higher than a 14-inch shaft or so. They'd mostly have to work for pant-tucking; I have my Borns for skirts, and on snowy days maybe I'd just wear the new ones to work and change. Or if I could find something with calf buckles so that they'd work for skirts too, that would be fantastic.

- Keep the black boots for now and get a pair of waterproof boots in another fun color - red? Would that be versatile enough? (I wear a LOT of red.)

- Get a pair of less-expensive wellies or something for snow, and just change into my regular shoes at work on the days I have to wear them.

Decisions, decisions! All I know is I don't want any more impromptu acrobatics in the parking lot!
