Thanks, Tarzy. I've seen boots with the elastic gore but wasn't crazy about how they looked either. Both you and Antje brought up a good point about the shaft height--something I was kind of wondering about as I looked at my pictures. It appears like the proportion is off and I should be looking for a slightly shorter boot. I'm SO glad you posted because I was questioning this again as I tried them on for the nth time thinking "oh, maybe they are okay."

If I can muster up the energy, I will make the trip to Nordstrom today or later this week to return the Pistons and try on as many boots as I can. I've seen loads of potentials on-line but I'm sick of the ordering and returning so if I can't find a boot in person, I'm going to settle for a new pair of booties.

Thanks so much for all of your helpful comments. I fear that pre YLF, I would have kept the boots and they would have been an expensive purchase that I would later regret. You guys rock! I'm hoping my next post can be titled, "Look--I love my new boots!"

Kellygirl, I think you might want to keep looking. Those are awesome boots, but they do look a little big on you. You are very slim and the boots overpower you just a tad. I actually think the width might be okay if they were an inch shorter, but the width and height together is just a tad much on your slender frame. And they wouldn't work well with a skirt.
What a bummer - since again, the boots are super, and you will pull off the skinny & boots look sooooo well. But it sounds like you want perfection in the boots (as you should), so you might just want to try a few more pairs. Stressful, I know

Kelly - that's funny that you wore the boots with your running shorts. Probably not a fab look, but it does give an idea of what the boots would look like with skirts. Good luck with shopping!

I'm so sorry you are not loving your boots!

I'm not an expert, but I do have large calves as well so I struggle with the whole tall boot thing every year. I think that probably most leather boots are going to fit this way, with a little gap. If they are large enough to fit the calf, they will most likely gape a little bit at the top. I just think it's a function of the calf size, more than the boot.

Personally, the little gap doesn't bother me, especially with jeans tucked it. I think you look great in your pictures.

However, if it bothers you maybe you can look for a boot that is made from that stretchy synthetic material, or perhaps one that has an elastic gore down the back? I've seen some like that on Zappos, in the "extended calf boot" section. Stacy London always touts those boots as great for larger calf women. I'm not in love with the look of those types of boots, so I have never bought them, but I can see how they might grip the leg differently.

Also - depending on how long your legs are, you might want to look for boots that are slightly shorter in shaft height, so that they end just at the top of your calf instead of higher on your leg. The boots I bought at Eddie Bauer last year have a shaft height of only about 13". When I wear them with tights I don't really get as much of a gap. The boots I bought this year from Rockport have a shaft height of 15", so they come up higher and there is a gap. But I love the look of my new boots, so it doesn't bother me at all.

Again, I understand what a personal issue this is so I really hope you find boots you love!

Perhaps Angie has had experience with large-calf gals and boots and she'll weigh in on the matter.

LOL, Alecia! I put the boots on before I went for a run. The running shorts with boots looked hid-e-ous (DD's use three syllables when it's really bad) so I just pretended to have forgotten the skirt. We were all giggling when I posted the pics!

Sounds like you have the right plan. I hate boot shopping, too. Good luck out there.

I love the picture you posted of the boots sans pants. It's very helpful in seeing the fit. But it is also a just a little racy, which made me giggle.

Thanks, Kyle and AJ. The boots fit perfectly in the calf but there is quite a bit of room above. I wonder why they aren't more tapered at the top--I would think the average leg gets smaller towards the knee. I guess I'm just going to have to physically go shopping--not my favorite activity but at this rate, I won't find a boot until next winter (if at all!) Thanks for your comments!

I like the boots too but they do look like there is a lot of room between the your calf and the boot at the top. It's not very noticeable with the jeans tucked in so is probably okay that way. But I don't think that you could wear them with skirts.

I like the boots a lot and I don't want to be negative -- but they look too big around the top to me -- more so in one photo than in the others, so I'm not 100% sure.

I don't have much boot experience either, Joy, so this should be interesting.

San, I cinched the buckle down as much as I could but it didn't seem to make much difference.

Thanks, Tarzy, Joy & KristinKP. I was afraid the buckles were too much too. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box. They don't scream "biker" at all.

Violet, I'll try to post a picture in a skirt tomorrow

I'm interested in the responses to your photos because I was given a pair of Lauren boots that fit me much like yours do in the photos with jeans. I was afraid they were too big in the calf. They are very comfortable otherwise.
Not having boot experience yet, I can't coment and don't have the eye for it.

I think the boots look great with jeans! They are the perfect style for skinnies. In the close up, I can see what you mean about thinking they are a tad big, but I think it is okay since you are wearing them with jeans. If you can post a picture with a skirt just to see how they look.

I LOVE them. They look great. I had seen those boots on Zappos and I was afraid the buckles were too much. But now that I see them on you they look fantastic! And I love those jeans with them.

I just bought some similar boots but they have no buckles or any decoration at all. I'm a little bit envious now!

My Franco Sarto "Piston" boots came in. After my Ride Line experience, I'm not sure I can trust my own judgment. I want to be absolutely positive about the fit since they are a major purchase for me. They are a smidge big on the top but I think it's okay since they are to be worn with skinnies. I don't think I can pull off a skirt in them. What do you think about the fit? Would you keep them or keep looking?
