As April already mentioned, altering shoulders, particularly ruched ones, is a diffiult alteration for even the best tailor and very expensive. Considering the elaborate draping of the dress, shortening it would, in my opinion, negatively affect the overall look and fit of the dress. Addionally, since you mentioned that you will probably only wear the dress oncce, it doen't make sense to spend a lot of money on it.

It looks to me that shortening it that much would make the draping lines and effects a lot different.

I'm not a seamstress, but I've always heard that shoulder alterations are prohibitively difficult and correspondingly expensive. :(

Sorry.

Calling all dressmakers here! This dress needs to be altered to fit me. The shoulders and bust area are too big. It's an AU 16 and I am a 14. I fell in love with it and a 14 couldn't be found. Is it possible to make the shoulders smaller even though they are ruched? The sleeves can probably stay a bit loose that I don't mind. The whole dress just needs to be lifted to fit me so to speak. Also hem needs to come up by about 7 inches! I'm wondering if the alterations are going to be so extensive the cost will blow out as I know I'll only wear it once. Would love some feedback lovelies before I end up paying someone a fortune to fix it!
