AliceinWonderland: I will check out Athleta, thanks for the recommendation. And YES to a good selection of boots. Topicfor another thread!

Suz: I will let you know how the dress and skirt work out.

Gigi: thanks for the recommendation of sweater tights. I think those will be my next addition. (They’re the type of tights that look like they’re knit, right?)

It can be tough trying to transition to skirts and dresses in the winter. As you probably saw from Angie's recent thread, retailers seem to skimp on warm dresses at this time of year, grr.

The only advice I can offer is that if you want corduroy, you could try Free People. They have a lot of corduroy items. I have a corduroy skirt from there. It is actually a miniskirt (not sure if that suits your fancy), and I wear it with sweater tights from Nordstrom. That's my rec: sweater tights with your skirts and dresses. Soooo cozy.

I’m a definite fan of dresses over pants as well.

I highly recommend Athleta sweater dresses. They are durable, comfortable and flattering. I think the quality is quite good, and the styles very wearable. It is my favorite thing to wear this winter.

Cashmere sweater dresses are really nice too!

For another office skirt, a pleated midi skirt is nice. Very versatile, can be styled for work, going out, or casual.

Having a nice selection of boots helps with no-pants dressing as they go with leggings and skirts/dresses well.

Hey - Just thought I'd report back. I ended up getting a sweatshirt dress/leggings (weekend look) and a paperbag skirt (work). Fingers crossed on the paperbag skirt.

I considered a more swingy midi skirt, but I just feel like that might be a little too fancy-free for me. (It looks like I'm less boho in the winter.)

I had to grit my teeth buying the sweatshirt dress, as it is very casual. I *know* it'll be a workhorse though.

I also got a couple of slim-fitting tops from Zara (green and burgundy) that I think will work nicely.

I ALWAYS have at least 1 sweatshirt or french terry dress in my closet. GAP has some very lightweight french terry sweatshirt style dresses in right now (I have one in black) for example.....TNF, LNBF, Patagonia, Columbia etc often have them. I absolutely love this type of dress for work and for casual. Hope you find something !

Smittie, COS has a boiled wool sweater dress that is awesome. Very cozy, and works well with leggings. I lemminged it from Toban.
This find is from last years but they have it this year as well. If the find doesn’t work search “boiled wool dress”. The site is down right now so I can’t get a link.

I like the idea of a tunic sweater and leggings. I had never worn that combo, but tried it last year with tall boots and wore the outfit in public, even, and liked it. I just bought plaid leggings from Old Navy. One pair is kind of subtle, but the other pair is in your face Stewart tartan. It seems Christmassy, so I might wait until after Thanksgiving to wear that pair.

So many great points LaPed. I think if I’m being honest with myself, I should get that sweatshirt dress. So practical.

Also, you make a great point about ponte for the weekend. I don’t think I would like the feel. I need to check if the one I posted is a blend. Blends are fine.

The reason I returned the sweater dress from Lacoste is...I forget why it was awesome and I should have kept it.

I do like cord. It’s cozy, as Brooklyn says. I think it would work well and might actually be a stand in for the sweatshirt dress. (Durable, Easy to wash, dry etc.)

I like the tunic/dress and leggings approach for weekend wear. There are all different sorts of sweater dresses out there; I'm sure you can find one that isn't too delicate and doesn't lose its shape, but it may take lots of try-ons to find the right one. IIRC, you briefly considered a Lacoste sweater dress last winter but decided against it? Any particular reason?

For true casual wear (kids' sports games, trips to the park, etc) I think dress in a sweatshirt material is a great idea. You won't have to feel precious with it, because it'll be easy to wash and won't pill or snag. The Boden one is super cute. I've been wanting a hoodie-style dress for years and still don't have one!

Another option might be a flannel or brushed cotton shirt dress. They come in solids and prints, not just plaid! Here's a solid-coloured one from Patagonia, but I've seen similar from Gap, Uniqlo, and many other brands. https://www.patagonia.com/prod.....58470.html

I find that ponte and ottoman rib skew a little too office-y to feel like weekend wear, but YMMV. I like the idea of an a-line cord skirt, or even chino or denim.

Also -- I have a bunch of merino knit dresses, either sleeveless or cap sleeves, and I do indeed layer shirts and sweaters over them to vary the look and wear them year round. I don't have nearly as many casual skirts for the winter, mainly because I find that layering a skirt over leggings (rather than hose or tights) can lead to bulk at the waistband; it's just a lot of fabric to deal with all in one place. Dresses seem to cooperate a bit better with leggings.

Can’t add a Find because on my iPad but Aritzia has a midi length slight A line cord skirt you might want to check out. I love a sweater dress or sweatshirt dress for work from home wear and am also in the market for this myself.

I do wear blazers or long cardigans on top of dresses. And coats of course.

Wool challis skirts or dresses would be ideal. Drape plus warmth. But they can be hard to locate.

Thank you, ladies! I am slightly concerned about the durability of sweater dresses. Worried they might pill on the bottom. There's also a cling factor, but I think an a-line shape (like the boden one) would solve that.
I agree with Brooklyn that they are more cozy and weekendy than woven dresses, so I'm still strongly leaning towards one.

I was all geared up to buy something yesterday , but I think I will hold off so that I can explore the sweaterdress/midi options better. Midi would add a huge dose of trendiness, so that's a huge draw.

Suntiger: That is a gorgeous colour combo. Just fabulous. That would work on me too! I like the concept of knit tube skirts, but in reality, I find them too bodycon. However, never say never!

Cee: Thanks. You got a 'wisdom' for that one, not a 'comedy' this time :-)

Rachylou: I have been eyeing the sweatshirt dresses but I am just not sure about wearing sweatshirts. Maybe though. Maybe...

Angie: There are lots of great options here. I love the Madewell midi but it is sold out already. The Boden midi dresses look good too.

Brooklyn: So you're saying knee length? Yes, I think I should be disciplined about that. I need to think about this. Love the idea of an asymmetric knee/midi length a-line skirt. Hard to find tho. Am thinking a flowy midi would be a good change from the straight skirts.

Jessikams: Thank you. I actually don't mind constriction in the waist. I'm opting for skirts and dresses because they're more figure-flattering on me, that's all.

Sal: Yes, I can see how a flowy midi would work in the winter. I am thinking a midi-length-flowy-somethingorother would be a good contrast to the wool skirts I have. Thanks. I'm getting some good ideas.

Sarahd8: don’t you just love that rust colour. I think it would go really well with my burgundy and navy tops. I keep looking for windowpane plaid. It is the right scale for me and is subtle enough to have closet longevity.

Roberta: I'm not sure I'm comfortable in knits on the bottom. I agree with you about the corduroy in skirts. I don't think this one is going to work as it does indeed look a bit stiff and bell-like.

Cardiff: The ottoman fabric seems very practical. The dresses are all a bit body con though. There are a few non-body con ones---in the wrong colours It's good to hear your feedback on yours. I like 'easy' :-)

Bijou: Denim skirts are a great idea. For some reason, I discounted them simply because they were denim, but that's not fair. I love denim.

Staysfit: Good point about separates being more versatile. Especially when I'm just starting to build a capsule of non-pants, it is important to keep versatility in mind. I suppose though, I could wear a sweater over top of a dress. Hmmm...

DD almost never wears jeans or trousers. She wears skirts with yoga style leggings underneath to keep warm on weekend. Usually the skirts are above the knee but she’s taller than me, so it’s hard to find much else! She has a few sweater dresses also, but separates are more versatile. If you rely on Dresses only, you will be repeating wears of the same dress and it is harder to create variety in the look, if that is important to you.

I like denim skirts with tights and boots as a casual alternative to jeans. I like the Boden cord skirt, it has a nice rich velvety texture, yet still looks casual enough to be worn on the weekend. Well done for not buying more jeans!

I always wear leggings with skirts and dresses as I don’t get on with tights.Theleggings I wear have a smooth ,flat non constricting waist band and I find them less bulky than tights but as always it’s down to individual preference.l have a Boden casual dress in ottoman type fabric and will wear it to death in the Winter months.Dresses like this are so handy ,you can chuck them on and layer them up as required.l like all your suggestions.l guess it depends what works best with your existing wardrobe pieces.

I love Boden's heavier ottoman dresses. Perfect with leggings and boots all winter long. Add a pretty scarf and i am dressed. I have gone off skirts in the winter, as I don't like the double waist, as SarahD8 comments. I seem to have gone off skirts in general, actually. I notice i have weeded quite a few this year.

However, I do recommend wool challis skirts as both drapey and warm. I find corduroy a bit stiff in a skirt - sort of bell-like and my knees are the clapper. I also like wool crepe; Talbots always has nice ones for winter. And Title Nine always has nice sweater dresses and tunics.

I look be a good sweater dress or skirt. And actually, this year I’ve seen sweater-knit wide leg pants too. Those might be a good option, if what bothers you about pants is the binding feeling.

I missed the question about work skirts. I agree with Sal that an asymmetric skirt would be great for another shape. I think they are hard to find in wool however (I have a Carven one but I did a lot of hunting for that shape and then got lucky on the price, which seems to have gone up). A plaid or check asymmetrical midi skirt in wool could look really good. Something like this Vince one (available @ YOOX, but it’s spendy).

I have a couple of casual dresses that I wear in the weekend. I have also worn tunics and leggings and do find this a comfortable casual weekend look. The find attached is a fun one that can be layered up or down - it is shorter on me than the model, and not quite as oversized.

How about an asymmetric skirt for work as a different shape?

I love the rust skirt shown for you.

I agree with Angie, for weekend wear I think sweater dresses would be the way to go. Something about knitwear feels more cozy and comfy for the weekend than a woven skirt or dress. You can live my fantasy life for me - I’d love to stock up on sweater dresses for winter but I don’t have the climate for it.

I personally like knee length A-line skirt with jumper and boots (plus leggings, coat, scarf as needed) or tunic style sweater dress (knee length or a little longer). Here are a couple of older photos of mine that give the general idea (I still have and wear all these items, except the OTK boots which stretched out and died unfortunately).

I also really like the idea of a corduroy skirt. It’s wintery, a bit casual, has nice texture and is a bit trendy, no? I like the A-line versions. I have also been eyeing off that green Boden version (the Burston skirt) and hoping someone in the forum would buy it soon. Please tell all if you do Some of the reviews are critical about the length. And sometimes that pocket placement can be unflattering. But it could be a great weekend look.

I like the idea of that boden tunic a lot. Personally I’d find leggings + skirt a bit bulky in the waistband, so if leggings (I agree for comfy weekends) I’d go the dress route.

For a work skirt, how about a black and white windowpane plaid? Or, a warm color for the bottom to contrast with the cool shades you wear on top? That rust is so yummy, could you find that in a work appropriate material?

Excited to see how this develops!

HAH. Chuckling at your skirt and dress shift. So fun!

Sweater dresses and midi/knee length fit and flares, as far as dresses go. Tall boots, hose, scarf, thermals, coat, gloves, topper to stay warm.
