They don't fit through the hip like current culottes do. (Also, current styles tend to be a bit higher waisted, I think, though this is less of an issue in my view.) I'm with Angie for this reason. If I were going to shorten pants like this, I would find it hard to do; I would want a friend to mark the hem (with a ruler stood on end on the floor) so that it was straight. Using the existing hem as a guide won't necessarily work, because you're taking off so much.
