If it's a summer trip, consider packing a pair of black plastic flip flops from Payless shoes.
They're good for the beach, in the rain...and they take up no space in your suitcase.
I just find them handy.

Wow! This advice is wonderful! Thanks to all.

I'll be looking for a raincoat (my one is extremely old and makes me feel paunchy!) and some waterproof shoes.

Welcome, LucyRose,

You have had some good advice already, so I'll just add that our weather can change over the course of one day, so, if you are going to be out all day, have a warm top layer handy, plus a small umbrella. Also, make sure you have comfortable, flat shoes as many of our older towns and cities have cobbled streets.

You are spot on with the likely temperatures, assuming that you will be travelling soon. The weather so far has been a little disappointing - cool, windy and often wet, mostly in the high 60s - but I'm hoping that will change very soon ( ever the optimist! ).

Enjoy your trip.

I second the suggestion for a raincoat. Even better if it's one you can easily fold for carrying with you during the day. A portable umbrella (everytime I went to England I always ended up buying one at the drugstore, so you can always just do that when you arrive). A good tote. Waterproof shoes of your preference...
Also, when I travel I do enjoy buying some clothes--they don't have to be pricy or special--so if your budget allows, leave some room in your bag and you can get items you need when you are there.
I also love scarves because they easily add warmth that you can regulate (wrap around shoulders for more warmth, loose on neck for medium) and they can change up your look while taking up little room in the bag.
I love England! Have some elderflower soda while you're there!

You can see my posts on choosing things for trip to Ireland. Temps there were 40's-60, but still layers are the thing. You will probably be taking some kind of raincoat/rain jacket--for me, a hip-length sporty rain jacket was fine, since we were very casual, but if you need to dress more smartly, a trench would work. The good thing about a nice rain coat/jacket is it serves as a good insulating layer on dry days as well as on rainy.
I used "long underwear" in silk and merino(2 types) and footless tights as layers under pants, since I run really cold. My pants and tops choices,.by themselves without extra layers, would have worked for me even into 70's, but warmer-natured folks would want short-sleeves and maybe shorts or skirts. Also, then the outfit itself "speaks" more, whereas actually I stayed rather bundled up during my trip.
Worst case scenario is, seems to me, is that if it's cooler, you end up wearing all your heavier items or layers all the time, or warmer, vice versa.

I took things I could hand wash and dry pretty easily, and did a little of that, mostly underlayers, and also we were not gone so long, and I had overpacked a bit so had a little more of everything than I needed for a true minimalist packer. Many of the blogs I read said just to plan on doing some laundry at laundromat, or via hotel facilities/services. So, interestingly that might influence what I pack for a trip, such as sturdier items I "trust" in commercial laundering vs things that pack well but I would only hand wash and dry.

I am going on a six week trip to England. The weather is expected to be in the 60\s and 70's bracket, but I want to be prepared for cold and wet and hot all at the same time!
