is this a constant thing or only at the end of the day? if just the end of the day, have your days been longer (you say you've been working a lot)? if so, it could be that your feet are swelling at the end of the day due to walking, sodium, water intake, etc.

Velvetychocolate might be onto something.
You say it's been going on for 3-4 months, with shoes that previously didn't give you any trouble... the only explanation is that your foot is somehow bigger, and that's what happen with water retention.

Bigger or... of a different shape: Could it be calluses? Not right where you blister, but say on your heel, which in turn pushes the skin out, slightly changing the shape of your foot and causing it to rub against a shoe where it previously didn't.

If so, along appropriate treatment, getting a full pedicure periodically should help.

If not, it really might be a good idea to see your doctor, just to rule out any possible underlying systemic cause.
Hugs to you.

Sounds like what I call "puffy feet" - ie. water retention. You wouldn't notice it first thing in the morning when you put your shoes on, but throughout the day - your feet might be swelling up a bit, causing chafing/irritation that you hadn't experienced before.

Causes for this sort of thing? Traveling, hot weather, increased intake of high-sodium foods throughout the day, increased refined carbohydrate content in daily meals/menus, decreased vegetable intake (veggies are very good for sloughing off water weight), drinking more sodas/Diet Coke recently, not drinking as much water and so on.

In short, there are a lot of things that cause water retention throughout the day, and I'm thinking that the reason your shoes aren't fitting as well as you remember is because of plain old water retention, and it could be anything from sodium to not eating as many salads/veggies as you might have in the past. Could be something as simple as drinking more Diet Coke to being so busy lately that you're not eating as many vegetables as you normally do. Maybe not drinking enough plain water - that sort of thing.

It's happened to me before - put on shoes, everything's fine, but then somehow - at the end of the day, my formerly super-comfortable shoes aren't so comfortable anymore. For me, it boils down to retaining water.

Not sure if this helps - but this is what came to mind when I read your post.

Remedies? Drink more water, ditch high-sodium foods/ processed meats, eat more vegetables and fruit, nix diet pop/soda for a short time (replace with real brewed plain iced tea if you need the caffeine lift), eat a bit more celery and asparagus (water sloughing veggies). I'm thinking this is a temporary problem - nothing to do with skin issues or what have you, but that you might be retaining more water than usual throughout the day for whatever reason - because of this, you shouldn't get rid of your perfectly good shoes - it's more likely that this is a totally temporary situation.

In the meantime, although I haven't posted/participated much, just wanted to say that I have the same green/marble MK draped neck dress as you do - in fact, you looked so good in that thing that I snapped one up immediately (quite awhile back).

I'm still working on "the last ten/twenty pounds" (after losing over a hundred already), but the thing is - you've given me the inspiration to just go ahead and be/feel beautiful anyway, right now. Gain ten, lose ten, puffy feet or no puffy feet, job stress, family stress, whatever - why not look and feel good now?

Sorry for the off-topic tangent, just wanted you to know what a great influence you are :)

Here's hoping you solve the shoe problem.

PS - traveling tomorrow, and so this is kind of a drive-by post - if I don't respond to anything, it's because of my absurd schedule. Only mentioning this because I don't want to seem rude just jumping in on a post and then not being here again for awhile.

I go through something similar for the first month or two of warmer weather when I switch to shoes or sandals worn without socks. I carry clear bandaids in my handbag at all times By the end of the summer my feet "toughen up" a bit.

I blame my sensitivity on dry skin and try to apply lots of lotion to keep my feet moisturized. Aside from bandaids, that's the only thing I've found that helps!

This might be too obvious to mention, but are you walking more?

I know you often bike, so I wondered if you've been hoofing it more in general?

I do not have any answers, I'm afraid, but I love that moleskin on the shoes suggestion.

My feet have one fussy spell, every year, without fail. I may have mentioned it already in another thread. What happens is this: sandal season comes around. I walk and walk in my sandals (brand new or already "broken in" - it doesn't matter). Within a day or two I have terrible blisters. I change to a different pair of sandals and get different blisters. I try a third pair of sandals, and try not to walk as much for a few days (very difficult for me). And then my feet somehow recover and I do not get blisters for the rest of the summer, or the rest of the year, for that matter!

I have never found a solution for this. I just stick on those blister bandages and wait for the healing.

Which is no help whatever to you, but may be some company, at least!

I did add two new medications recently... but this problem actually pre-dates the new meds by a few weeks. Huh. At least I'm not getting itchy/peely/chapped skin or rashes or anything.

Nicky, I'd wondered that, but my shoes don't feel any different - if they were feeling tighter than usual I'd suspect that was the issue.

I agree with Queen Mum--absolutely love moleskin.
One thing that I can think of that could cause this is if your feet are swollen, which can happen if you are retaining water of if you have gained a few pounds.

Have you changed any medications or skin care products or been eating more or less of certain foods? I find certain soaps will cause the skin on my hands to become irritated. My partner's mom was given a medication one time that caused the skin on her feet to start peeling horribly.

Oooh. I could certainly try that! I don't think I've ever applied moleskin to my shoes - I usually apply it to my feet around a blister or hot spot that's already formed to relieve the pressure.

I've also never tried that Blister Block stuff. Not sure if it's any good.

Nakidra, it certainly could be stress related. I have basically been a big ball of stress for months. (Not really any end in sight - I'm basically trying to cram too much to do at work into 40 hours/week and do a "good enough" job at everything, and I don't foresee that changing.)
My skin on my face has been unusually fussy lately too, and I'm sure that could be the connection.

Sylvia, I don't think so - though I'm due to go in for a blood draw at my doctor's so we'll see. The only deficiency that turned up last time was vitamin D, which is very, very common in the Pacific Northwest since we don't get a ton of sunlight, so I take D supplements now.

Taylor, while my blisters may be happier with high heels, my arches and the balls of my feet are not! Low heeled slingbacks with a very wide back strap are the only shoes that are not generating blisters right now.

I don't know why, but for the past 3 or 4 months my feet have been rebelling, or more precisely, the skin on the back of my heels. Several pairs of shoes that have been tried-and-true comfortable with or without socks or tights are suddenly giving me blisters if I wear them bare... or even with thin hose, like microfishnets. For probably the fourth time this summer, I've spent the past week with (sorry, TMI) large open sores on my heels covered with Blistex band-aids, which basically restricts me to slingback style shoes. (Though very, very high heeled pumps are actually okay as the increased angle causes less rubbing against the blister.)

Any ideas for what the cause could be? I'm pretty sure it's not a skin issue, and my feet are not sweating any more than they used to. My shoes feel fine when I first put them on and they do not feel any tighter than they have in the past, and I've inspected the shoes (several pairs) and can't find signs of wear. I just seem to be very suddenly blister-prone and I'm not sure what to do.

So, talk to me, my fellow fussy-footed fashionistas. What can I try to remedy this situation that won't require me to discard perfectly good and otherwise comfortable shoes?
