The Cat, I'll keep the column of color in mind. I suspect ultimately I just needed a size up on that skirt, so it would sit a little lower and maybe not pouf out so much at the wrong place. That ship has sailed, but it's possible I'll lose weight. I do plan to try, for health reasons - I've gotten good at maintaining my weight, at least, so I'm trying to see if I can start shaving some calories off.

The fennel stuff works better for my particular issues, alas. But I use peppermint too, and it is MUCH nicer.

I, too, like the two-piece dress.

When you have a short waist and a big difference between waist and hips (I have to cope with the same issues), an great solution can be to wear a column of colour, like a (kind of) suit or dress. So you may be able to wear your red skirt--though the shape seems difficult-- with either a red top or a red jacket.

By the way, peppermint tea, too, relieves stomach bloating, AND it has a fresh taste. Green tea, as well, is very beneficial (but, IMO, has a boring grass-like taste). So one of my favourites is a mix of peppermint and green tea. I have found that this mix has a pleasant taste, improves digestion, has a soothing effect, and even improves breathing (I struggle with several allergies).

Angie, me too! It’s funny how I stumbled on to that. It’s like having a suit that I can break up if I want.

I’m short waisted too, and I don’t wear skirts anymore. I don’t like the red skirt with tucked tops on you, because I don’t like these proportions on myself. Maybe a short welted top could work?

I love the polka dots skirt with polka dots top on you, very flattering, looks like a dress, so the short waist is not emphasized.

K.M the thing that helps me most is fennel tea. Pure medics grade fennel, which I get from amazon. Heather’s tummy tea.

I think that the red skirt works in some situations and with some tops, but since I have a tiny New York City apartment I have to keep the most versatile pieces.

Also, I got the red sweater but it’s rather long. That color doesn’t come in petite. Sigh.

Christina, first I'll say that I'm long-waisted and I never liked being long-waisted, for some reason I thought it made me look stumpy. I don't know if it's a case of "grass is greener on the other side" or perhaps we are our own worst critics, but just thought I'd share my own hangups for having the opposite body proportions.
Having said this, I get what you mean, but I still like you in the red skirt with tucked-in tops. I agree that some of the tops work better than others; to my eyes, the best ones are: 3, 5, 6, 8. I was trying to figure out what makes #8 work so well (it's my favorite and seems to be the favorite of other fabbers). Perhaps because it is both streamlined and structured, so it gives your torso a slim but figure-defining fit (i.e. not too tight, not loose or flowy). The color and cut help with this. I do like the burgundy top too, partly because of the color combo. But I think the black shell works better partly because it is sleeveless; somehow it balances out the proportions. I would suggest that you look for similar tops that are fitted but not skintight, with some structure on the shoulder line and bust (dart lines), short sleeves or sleeveless, in dark colors...
Given your dressy occasion needs I can also see that the polka dot skirt would be a great investment piece. You look beautiful in it, and it is so versatile (it looks like you already have some great tops to match it).
PS I have bloating issues, and when I do I can't stand anything constricting around my mid-section (whether at the waist, above, or below!). Ugh... haven't found a good solution...

I think it does help, Jenni! Looks good on you. I don’t have anything that would fit the bill in a good coordinating color, but I’ll keep it in mind if try to resurrect the skirt from the holding zone. I have other full skirts, so that’s still a useful tip. I had to get rid of an ink blue Moto jacket that might have worked, as it was a holdover from smaller sized times and didn’t close well. Still haven’t found a good replacement.

Hi fellow petite pear/apple shaped person! I have the same trouble with skirts as you do. I think that black shell top in your pic 8 is really flattering with that red skirt though and I love the red skirt. A cropped jacket? My only attempt at such an outfit this year was with my daisy skirt which gained the YLF seal of approval. The cropped jacket helped?

So I took overnight to think about this.

1. I don't feel fab in the red skirt when the top is tucked (except in the case of that one black shell). I feel only being able to wear an untucked sweater over it most of the time limits it. I may chalk this up to a buying mistake, but I am going to put the skirt into holding till next winter and see where my body's at, most likely. I suspect I should size up on these skirts so the waist is not at my chest, in the future.

2. I realized have a need for a dressy cold weather capsule, starting this year. We upped our membership at the Met Museum to the level where we get invited to nicer occasions, and we've been taking up the invitations.

Therefore, I can see a place for the black polka dot pencil skirt in my life, and believe it will be easier to style. The bloating is an issue, but I can do (and should be doing) things to manage it, especially if I know in advance that I'll be wearing the skirt. The skirt wasn't tight across my belly, and I'll likely always have tights or nylons underneath, which will help.

I also thought about how much I love red, and have very little of it. So... I'm going back for the skirt and the red version of the sweater I tried on. I will also keep the black top, as I believe I can wear it to work with jeans, or dress it up. I'm holding off on deciding about the silver top - I like it, but I will always need to layer over it during the festive season!

smittie, I’m considering it anyway! I have a black pencil skirt in a more casual fabric, so if I get this it would be for my dressy capsule.

Christina— the slim fitting skirt from the store looks really great. The slim Fit works well (I agree with Janet). I wonder if you could find this style in a more casual fabric and wear it with flats so that it meets your lifestyle requirements.

The tucked tops with the red dress make you look too short waisted, IMO. Untucked looks really good though.

I totally understand and sympathize with what you are saying. I find this kind of skirt nearly unworkable for myself — also short-waisted, and busty and with significant hips. It always just seems to add volume where I don’t need it, rather than camouflage. I do better with streamlined shaping that gently follows the contour of my body — sheath dresses and pencil or gentle A-line skirts. Tucking anything in a high waist just seems to emphasize my disproportionate-ness.

It seems like the red skirt is a challenge for you, and perhaps you don’t feel fab in it? If you feel fab in it, you’ll find a way to wear it. But I have to admit, I prefer the skirt you tried on in the store with the tops. Please take my advice with a grain of salt — my eye is really sensitive to these proportions because of my own struggles, but I know other women who rock this style regardless!

The Cat, I think #8 is the best too. Here is the same top with a more flowy, forgiving skirt for comparison. I can adjust where the waist is on this one.

Never fear, I love my bold colors, though I’ve drifted away from red in recent years for some reason. I’ve been wanting to add more back to my wardrobe but haven’t seen it in the stores I frequent.

#8 looks fine!

Christina, I get what you mean. I, too, have to be careful when it comes to wearing wide skirts. Most narrow pencil skirts aren't for me either. After years of experimenting, I now know that my best skirts are soft A-lines, perhaps with a little stretch. I hope that you, too, will manage to find skirts which suit your figure and are easier to style. I also hope that you will continue to wear red and other bold colours which look so gorgeous on you.

Y’all, I remember why this skirt was hard to style. The pockets add bulk to the exact place where my hips flare waaay out from my very short waist. I’m all for reveling in my curves, but I just don’t find the tops that are tucked to be flattering. (See pic 11, and ignore my cracked mirror - we’ve had bigger fish to fry at home than replacing it.)

Of the tops that don’t need to be tucked, 3 is okay, the sweaters in 6 and 7 are good, but 9 is too long. The silver top doesn’t work. It’s better for a pencil skirt and pants. I don’t find most of the other tops to work for various reasons, except maybe 8.

This is why I moved away from skirts. I find this style most comfortable, since I bloat, but too tricky to find tops for. Pencil skirts look better, but not when I’m bloated, and they’re the first to stop fitting when I gain weight, so I gave up on most of the ones I had.

Since this skirt looks to me like it has limited possibilities that don’t add bulk to the area where my body widens quite a bit, I’m inclined to pass it on, though my love for the color is strong. I wasn’t intending to replace this skirt if I didn’t make it work, but the black one is cool and could be okay for limited use.

I may be overreacting. I may just have a poison eye for tucking tops into my skirts because I’m so short wasted. If you all think I am wrong, I am willing to take that into account !

Love the white & black (?) polkadot shirt, the green skirt, and the silver top. I think all these items (including the red skirt) could easily be styled in various ways.

If the polkadots on the white shirt are black, you could wear that shirt with black shoes (i.e.pumps or ballet flats) and either of the bright skirts. If the dots are navy, navy shoes would be fine.

The silver top would look elegant with many skirts (and pants). You may need to add a jacket, cardigan or wrap.

By the way, if you like plaid shirts, they would be a great match with the red and green skirts.

Oh ok, haha. Well I really like the polka dot top, and 6 as well. 1 is up there too.
The last one (white)—I didn’t care for. I think we’re the same page!

I have no need to actually get that skirt, smittie I just wanted something aside from jeans to try the tops with. Aside from it not fitting my lifestyle, even in my dressier capsule it would be problematic because I tend to get bloated. Today was a good day in that department... I did like it though!

ETA the black skirt would be great with the too Janet posted. Too bad I’m trying to make current items work, not buy tons of new ones!

Love this skirt. Great tops with it, in particular the matching polka dot one.
You look very pretty!

I went to AT and tried on some options with a pencil skirt I grabbed. The second pic shows where my waist actually is. The skirt is awesome, actually, but I’m not at all in the market for dressy skirts. I can’t style the one I do have.

I took home 4 and 6, as I thought I can pair them with other items too, aside from if they look good with the red skirt. I have learned my lesson about bringing home wardrobe orphans!

With 1, I didn’t care for the ribbed texture of the sweater. I think it might be too heavy with the jacquard skirt. I did like it... but it comes in red, and I like that even better. Don’t need it though.
I liked number 3, but thought it to be less versatile than the ones I took home. I liked the color of 5, though I’m not too sure about it now that my hair is red. Anyway it was a bit too see- through. I think the silver version has a better chance of standing up visually to the skirt, which is a substantial weight. I think the pink would look too flimsy.
Number 7 was just much too long to tuck in. Too much fabric. And that was the petite version, I believe. I could have size down, but didn’t care for it enough.

It’s possible I will try these, along with what I have at home, with the red skirt tonight, but it may have to wait.

Christina, I must say that I only struck upon this particular outfit combo by trying things on and seeing what they looked like. I don't think I would have been able to visualize and dream up this combo just in my mind... (I wish I had time to do more of this--but that means a lot of unfolding and refolding, rehanging etc...)

K.M., looks good! I am not a visual person, for all that I like color and pattern, so sometimes I have trouble visualizing things together until I've tried them. That is very helpful to me.

PS. A few years ago I posted a WIW with my red skirt; below is one of the pictures with the magenta/wine combo.
