I would contact the couple or someone “in the know” to find out what they expect the range of what men will wear to be. Or what they expect most men to wear.
I say that because often the couple would prefer on the dressier end but they know most will not choose to do so.
I went to a summer cocktail/garden party wedding in California and nearly all the men wore dress shirt/nice pants/tie. It was, however, 90? 95? degrees.

cjh makes some good points about those "one-offs" that turn out to be a series with long idle periods between events.

But here's what another publication has to say https://lifetailored.com/style.....e-for-men/

It starts off Cocktail attire started in the 20s as an alternative to formal attire.
In today’s world, the culture as a whole is entirely more relaxed, which
makes dressing for “cocktail attire” that much more confusing. What is
exactly acceptable? Well, to start, no tuxedo, no jeans, and no leather
sneakers. Cocktail in essence boils down to wearing a smart suit, shirt and tie, but there are exceptions.

Tips, convince him to buy a real classic suit because, at least in my world, retired people still need one. My husband was a pallbearer last weekend, and we do attend funerals and an occasional wedding. His parents are in decent health but very elderly, and the need for funeral clothes at the ready is real. And to be honest, I would prefer to bury him in a suit than any of his casual clothing. Your situation in this area may be different, of course.

Fortunately he has a classic darkish gray suit bought in 1996 that is still a current cut and still fits, but if it didn’t, I’d insist on updating. It’s lovely and doesn’t look dated or worn, especially since I’ve kept his small tie and shirt selection current.

New Orleans is a fairly casual city. Dressier Khaki pants, a button down, and a navy blazer might be OK. However, a suit really would be best.

My husband and I are attending a wedding in mid-April in New Orleans. It will be in a garden, and the dress code is cocktail.

My husband lives in jeans and tees from L.L. Bean. He is retired and never wears a suit.

I am stumped! Any tips or suggestions? I know he'll balk at spending much money -- we're already paying for airfare and a b&b.

Thanks!
