Yes, we’ll see how it goes.
Suz and Mainlady, the floral skirt is Anthro, yes. I found quite a lot at Anthro this year. Less at JCrew and Banana Republic, my usual go-tos.

Smittie - I look forward to hearing how they work. Shift dresses are my favorite shape dress by far because they hint at shape and I don’t run into the issue of the waist being too high.

Both are beautiful dresses. I love the colors you are selecting. I think the red is a dressier option. It might really depend upon where the tie sits...at the wrong height it can be a deal breaker for me.
Love the skirt....anthro?

LaP: you look fab in your tie waist shirt dress.
As @viva points out, these are apples and oranges. Viva, in another thread you point out that the tie dress reminds you of your mother: casual and elegant. It is the same for me.

I ended up ordering both (I’m so indecisive!) as well as a pair of no-fail sandals, so that my cross-border trip to Ogdensburg NY will still have positive results if I have to return both dresses.

Shifts work well on me if I size for my hips. I really like a bit of a “structured sack” look, which is what this is.

Definitely plan to wear TABLE CLOTH RETRO dress with white jeans, and on its own with sandals (see Finds).

The tie waist is a bit of a gamble. In the past, the ties have not been wide enough. Maybe this one will be ok.

Thank you to everyone who so generously provided opinions and thoughts!

I actually find the fit-and-flare shirt dress styles a lot easier to fit/wear than short shift dresses. Sometimes shift dresses are cut too straight through the hips and ride up on me. I find anything with a full skirt more forgiving, and so much easier to walk in, even though I love the look of shifts and sheaths. I have a very similar linen-cotton shirt dress with a belt, from last year. I mostly wore it with sneakers (or my Chaco!), but did "dress it up" with heeled sandals once: https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....w-and-wimw

I really like the gingham if you're looking for a younger, trendier, more casual look. It feels very beachy to me, like a great dress for shopping, meeting a friend for lunch, or going to an outdoor concert. I think it would be very cute over white jeans. Personally, I am too old for heels/bare legs/short dress -- so that's hard for me to envision. I really see this with flats or maybe those cork wedges.

My personal favorite is the longer red dress. I agree with Angie that it's more elegant -- the longer length, the lack of pattern, the classic shape. And I think it's versatile (could see it with the block heels to work or out to a nice dinner as well as with sneakers and a tote for the farmer's market). Cons: I wonder if it's better on a taller person because of the length? And I wonder how hip-friendly it is. It does get good reviews on Boden; one person even commented that it is indeed low-wrinkle. I'm strongly considering it for myself.

Comparing them feels a little like apples and oranges - I can easily see how one wardrobe could have room for both, since they could be suited to different purposes.

I like both dresses in styling however I hate clothing that crushes and so linen dresses can drive me crazy if the linen crushes a lot because sometimes the linen will crumple up and show the dress lining. There are some types of linens that surprisingly don't crush very much at all and they are sublime to wear. If the second dress is a low crease linen, then that would be my favourite - but the crush test would cause me to reject a great dress outright.

I'm going to be contrary too! I love both dresses, but if we're talking workwear I prefer the second one. The shirttail hem and gingham of the first seem slightly more casual to me, and I like the more contrasty pairing of the red dress with the block heels.

I really like the gingham dress - a lot - for you, but have to say that the red shirt-dress is leaving me cold. I know the forum is all over this one, but I'm not convinced. I agree with the Sal in thinking it could be fussy to wear with all of what is going on. Belted dresses need to be adjusted and fixed every time you sit down and stand up. Cute floral skirt, and great new shoes too!

I prefer the gingham dress for you - I really love the shape and could see it working well on you. It is fun, comfortable and maybe dressy enough for your work too?

I do like the shirt dress and this is a style I have tried over the years to get to work on me. But the buttons, tie belt and linen lead me to think it might not be the easiest and may be a bit fussy. It is a lovely classic style but I think it would need more help in terms of footwear, hair, accessories etc.

I think the question you have to ask is whether you want waist definition or not, and whether you want a strictly casual piece or something that can be dressed up. I see the belted shirtdress as the more versatile of the two, but the gingham is so playful -- and dresses can be a great chance to do prints since they are standalone outfits. You will look great in either one. Cute pink shoe capsule!

I have the first gingham in that shade of watermelon. Looks just like how the model is wearing it. Casual and easy. Works over cropped white straights too. Modern Retro Tablecloth.

The second with the tie would be mine if I wasn't sorted with dresses. It's dressier and a little fussier, but more elegant than the gingham.

You and I have very similar body types. I'm going with slim or straight hourglass - regular height, subtle curves, slight build, long necks, and narrow shoulders. I don't see pear or apple.

I have been shopping up a storm this spring and am almost done. Like angie, I’ve had a great season. Mostly I added a ton of pink!

I tried to find some denim skirts, and found 1 that fit the bill (see Finds). I was hoping for more but not much available for floral prints.

So I was thinking that I should regroup and refocus, and maybe take a chance on a dress. Dresses are a tough fit —the straight ones with no shape seem to work best on me (from the side I am a “slim apple” and from the front I am a “slim pear” and from behind I think I’m actually an hourglass! I’ve got a little of everything going on!)

The tie on the red one put me off at first, but I could remove it or use it as camouflage, so it might very well work.

I would like to wear either of them to work with a jean jacket and pink sandals (see Finds) or possibly with the pink block heels (also in Finds).

Do you have a preference for either dress shown in Finds?
Could they be worn with the block heeled shoes?
