I totally agree with junipergreen - the collections and Finds and the Ensembles in Finds are a great idea. And maybe in the future some additional behind the scenes magic could allow you to control how the Ensemble or Collection is displayed (such as which images are larger, maybe allowing them to overlap, etc.)?

I saw the news about Polyvore and immediately felt my heart drop for you Angie!

But here are a few thoughts that might not involve a 3rd party service:

What about just using finds to create outfit formulas? You sometimes already do this within one post to separate out categories - like one part on tops and another part on skirts, another on footwear, etc, but not necessarily with an eye toward putting together a complete look. I'm picturing a grouping of finds that helped create the feel of an intended ensemble. The result might be bit more like loose ingredients than a completed recipe, but if you can find an outfit on a model or a street style pic that emulates the look, it could further help give the feel of the intended look.

I also really like when you use the finds in the Collection Page format (that's my preferred method of browsing them) so there might be an opportunity to use that to add more commentary to the various outfit components.

Thanks, ladies. You're all lovely.

I have to use the app on my DESK TOP, not my phone. I do all my YLF post writing on my huge Apple desk top screen. That's one of the ways we can maintain the high level of visual quality on the site. Same way outfit pics are taken with a magical REAL camera and an assortment of professional lenses. Not an iPhone

I've worked out a temporary "outfit formula" solution. You can see it on Friday.

Angie don’t know if these are of any help but Stylebook has a facility for outfit collages like Polyvore and also one called Boutine (which I’m not personally familiar with). I’m thinking there must be some apps available to do what you have been doing, I will investigate further xxx. Caldwell is another app that might work x

Hope you'll find a replacement somewhere somehow.
But what about sharing your own outfits (for ex. in a mirror & taken yourself:-)). Time for shooting those can be even less then that used for creating polywore ensembles:-)). (Now you can really tell how much I miss your own gorgeous IRL outfits:-)).

What a setback! I remember when Polyvore was a revolutionary concept -- I read this article about it in the New Yorker, back in 2010!
https://www.newyorker.com/maga.....-democracy

I wonder if that's a bad sign for Pinterest (which is of course different in many ways).

I also like the idea of refreshing old favorite outfits. I've been paying attention to fashion for just long enough now that I've cycled away from some key styles and then cycled back to the same looks but different (small fashion cycles, not decades). Analyzing the little differences helps me edit my old wardrobe and my new purchases so that I feel current.

Such a surprise and bummer about Polyvore, Angie! We never know what curveballs life will toss our way, do we?!

I’m another who is intrigued by a Flashback or re-Fresh Friday—“Friday Flashback”? “Flashback Friday”? “Friday’s Fresh Flashback”? Some of our Forum wordsmiths could have fun with the name.

I expect someone/something will step up to offer what Polyvore did, probably sooner than later!

Shoplook.io is apparently trying to fill the void. They said thst in the next couple of days it will be possible to upload old polyvore stars to their site (I think you need a file from polyvore to do this). And that they will be making other enhancemebts to make the "polyfam" welcome

Ummlila, I think the idea of Flashback Fridays is how to update beloved ensembles. It's the update ideas that would show the new content/wardrobe pieces. So it's almost a reFresh Friday or Freshen up Friday as much as a Flashback Friday.

No, UmmLila, I'm not part of any group.

YES. Agreed. The content MUST be fresh. The way I see it, a Throwback Friday post would be fresh. And with some sort of fresh visual. That's precisely the part that is of interest to my readership. It would not be a repeat old post.

Thanks, LBD. I like the wild card idea. I am very busy with clients at the moment - that time of the season - so I need to do whatever I can manage.

I hear you on the time-consuming part for PP or Adobe, especially because you then have to edit the images and remove backgrounds, which often makes the item look weird.

So many people used Polyvore, I think a replacement will eventually pop up. In the meantime, maybe Friday’s could be Wild Card, where you might write about, or feature anything: maybe take the things that are featured less frequently, like Link Loves or style bloggers, and run those more often for the time being.

And I love the flashback idea: a “best-of” series where you re-run your most popular wardrobe planning articles.

To clarify, is the issue that in order to have permission to use the images you need also preserve the link to the original retailer web site?

Also, I'm not sure I like the idea of doing the throwback posts. I think it's fun on the forum when you post your old outfits, but the blog really needs fresh content.

Maybe a consortium of fashion bloggers should approach the owners of Ssense and ask to buy that technology that they aren't using anymore. Are you a member of any sort of fashion/styllst/blogger industry group?

Janet and Bijou, YLF is not about small budgets and frugality, although we respect all budgets OF COURSE. Making it a Friday feature sends the wrong message to our readers because it creates an emphasis, IYKWIM.

I just wanted to mention that if you want to keep up with the Friday ensembles, I think it would be quite possible to use Adobe software to make your own collages. You would have to download the images, remove the background (there is an easy way to do that, especially for images with strong lines like product images are), and place them onto a new document, where you could move them and resize to your heart's content, put one in front or behind, etc. If you had the patience to work with Polyvore, you might even find it easier. I am sure there are many people in your area who could teach you how to do what you want to do within an hour or two, and then it would become routine. I suppose two annoying things would be that you would have to find a new way to search to identify the items you want to include, and that you would have to manually provide the links in the post.

If you don't keep posting ensembles, I will miss seeing which snack you choose

I really like many of the suggestions.

Janet's idea of Frugal Friday post appeals to me - style at any budget. I often enjoy seeing mid priced and budget items and how they compare to designer pieces. Eg: Gucci loafers (designer), as compared to Paul Green loafers (mid priced) and compared to Zara (budget item) for example.

Like Shevia, I found this Friday's post very instructive. Wrap tops have never really worked for me because I have a small bust. Now I know the sort of top to look out for, if I want to try wearing one. It was very useful.

I thought of something today, also in the alliterative theme... what about an occasional Frugal Friday post? Special picks for great items on a budget? It could be themed each time, perhaps (“here are a dozen terrific striped items at great prices” or trendy handbags, etc.). Just a thought that occurred to me. Everyone loves a bargain!

I feel a new tool will come along to address the needs of ex-Polyvore users - and I hope it is easier to work with at that. Meanwhile, I liked this past Friday's post quite a bit, where you compared to versions of one type of garment and explained why each type worked for different types. Lots of great ideas in this thread too!

Thank you so much for the detailed reply! Of course you are the professional and have the knack of choosing for yourself and others. Which is why we all want to learn from you x
I will need to now ponder if my expectations are unrealistic.

Jenni, (FWIW, I don't use the word cull. I edit and pass on).

To answer your questions:

I have a knack for choosing the right wardrobe items for myself and others - which is why I am a professional and have this site . I'm not infallible or perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I get it right most of the time. I have a very effective wardrobe (which has taken years to build). It makes me very happy and I love it. You can't beat that type of style satisfaction, so I share my strategies with others hoping the info can help them too. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't.

My expectations are different from yours. I do not expect items to last 5 years these days. Oh my word. No way. Especially not knits, jersey, natural fibres, and footwear. It's more like three years - and I don't include T-shirts and the like. That said, I have a slew of items that are five years and older that continue to earn their place in my wardrobe. Some items are 23 years old and still going strong, (like my Chanel bag).

I try to make an informed decision about potential workhorses. And am very discerning up front about the purchase. But I'm not always right about that because of uncontrollable variables like mood and emotion. I can be in the mood to wear something all season one year, but not the next. And vice versa. And again - my expectation is different. I don't expect every item to be a workhorse. I don't count my wears so I'm not trying to achieve the types of goals that you might be. That takes the fun out of it for me, and prevents me from listening to my feelings - which I feel is best when it comes to having a style that makes me feel fab. People are different in this regard, and we all have to do what works best for our needs. I hope that all makes a bit of sense!

I spent some time yesterday trying to find where I was asking initially about when you decided to cull, Angie. And even searching on all keywords including ditch, cull and Angie, I couldn't find it. But it was in Suz's Citizens Dree thread where I expressed my frustration about not being able to tell at the point of buying something whether it would become a tremendous workhorse or not and wondering if you always got that right at the point of purchase. I think my fascination with your wardrobe is to do with wondering if you pick everything better than we do! I don't mean the exact items, I mean in general for your style sensibilities, practicality, current trends etc etc. I really like that first old thread Suz links to above, as I also often want to keep my things 5 years or more. If they don't wear out, of course, or look battered about which I personally dislike.
