So frustrating! Yes this has happened to me and I purchased the garment in another country. It was like throwing my new garment into the rubbish bin. Bad

Yes, probably best thing to do to ring them, I cannot risk any diy operations... how annoying, I had my work outfit for tomorrow planned around it and was really looking forward to styling it. Lesson learnt :)
Thank you all.

wow.. quite the selection of videos on YouTube! What an aggravating thing to have happen. I agree, I'd call the store and ask their advice.

Well, this happened once to me. When I got home I realized that the tag was still on. When I returned to the shop, it turned out that the garment arrived as a sale leftover from another shop (hundreds of miles away) and that the deactivator in the shop where I bought it wasn't able to remove the tag. So the shop assistants called another shop in the mall, which had the right kind of deactivator and asked me to go there to remove it.
I think you should phone the shop where you made your purchase and tell them about the problem. They will probably find a solution.
Or you could see some of the tutorials for shop-lifters and try to remove it yourself.
In case you opt for DIY method, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRIqwSOeVXU

If it is an ink one, don't try it yourself. If it one without the ink, you could probably pry it open. ( this has happened to me many times...but always from a local store )

I would call the store you bought it from and ask if there is anywhere locally that you can take it. Also, may the store could call a store that you do have nearby and ask for a favor of taking it off for you.

Ladies, I need your advice. I have just returned home and unpacked the skirt I bought today. To my disbelief, I had found that the security tag had been left on (the big round one). Has that happend to you before?
The store where this has been bought is in another city that I was visiting today and there is no local branch where I live.
Any advice? I would like to avoid waiting until I go back there next time to be able to 'release' my skirt for wearing.
