Thanks, Anya! I've never heard of that brand before. The prices seem quite reasonable.

I'm glad to be compiling quite a list to present him with!

(A bit off topic, but I'm with you on the dress code. He was previously a contractor in an IT company, and it was jeans, sneakers, and tee shirts every day. I'm kind of thrilled now that I get to see him in nicer pants and button-down shirts! for his current job)

Try Geox Shoes. My both bosses wear them ( I suggest Federico style , but there are like 4 or 5 dressy options). Both of them are gushing about the fact that being a lot more breathable, they don't stink at the end of the day and quite comfy. This is quite popular in Europe, but I saw they have some stores/on-line store for the US.
( I tried to coax my BF to buy them but he still works in IT so it's skate shoes for him)
And they seem in the approximate price range

Angie and Anna, are there any ECCO styles (aside from the NAS Windsor which Kim kindly called my attention to) that you would especially recommend we try? I'm going to start scoping out deals online.

Steph, the idea of visiting a consignment shop for men's shoes never occurred to me. We'll have to give that a bash. No Filene's basement anywhere remotely near Washington state, sadly, but we do have others that are probably good options to look at.

I'll keep an eye open for deals for those brands online. Ebay's a good idea, though I have never purchased anything there, ever - a little scared of PayPal after a friend of mine had a very negative experience through them.

I agree that the price limitation is going to be your biggest problem. My boyfriend has Allen Edmonds, Santoni (which he loves and says are the most comfortable shoes ever), Johnston and Murphy and Bruno Magli shoes. Jos. A. Bank also carries men's shoes in a variety of brands and often has sales. If you find something you like in a brick and mortar store, I suggest googling it when you get home to see if you can find it for less. My boyfriend has purchased brand new shoes in this way from discount sites as well as ebay. My other suggestion is to go to Filene's Basement, as well as outlet shops, to see if you have any luck there. Since he is a size 8, you might find that the outlets have his size because it isn't as popular. I know I have seen many a small men's shoe at stores like that.

Opposite spectrum as DH wears a 14, but loves shoes but refuses to pay more than $60 for them (hello?), I'm assuming small feet are simlarly difficult as big feet. Recently got some great Propets from Amazon and some killer Doc Martens from Nordstrom Rack. I have decent luck on Endless and J C Penney carries good brands. Men's shoes are more expensive because they usually have 3 pair (black, brown, sneakers) and they last (The opposite of men's underwear costing 75% less than ours) A man at work has the coolest shoes, but they are Cole Haans so not going there.

Thanks, Jonesy! We'll take a look.

Angie, I don't know that he has ever tried ECCO. Why that didn't come to mind, I don't know. Thanks a bunch!

Kim, The Windsor has potential. I'll have to run it by B. to see what he thinks. He's pickier than I am, I think! Cole Haan might work as well - I think I'd have to see the whole outfit with his work pants and shirts to determine if they would be dressy enough. They would be an improvement on his current shoes, though.

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies!

Thanks, Malina! I will keep an eye out. Maybe we can find a deal somewhere. I don't think he has tried that brand at all before.

Kim, I did try presenting that argument; but all the same, budget is a factor and he really isn't comfortable spending several hundred dollars on a pair of shoes. That's partly why I offered to split the cost of a pair of shoes if we find one that is perfect but is too high for his preferred budget. If we can find shoes around $200 we could probably make that arrangement work, but $250 and up would be too high.

hmmm... have you tried giving him the cost per wear argument for shoes? Maybe you can convince him that the cost per wear of a pair of $200-$300 pair of shoes would actually be quite reasonable given that he will be wearing them 5 days a week, roughly 250 times over the course of a year. That is a fraction of what he will spend on lunch or even a coffee every day.
I did see some nice men's shoes in the NAS catalog. Macy's seems to have some nice men's shoes as well.

My BF loves Mezlan and Moreschi shoes but they are not cheap! He has had luck on Amazon and eBay. He also has smaller feet (8.5 or 9) but that can sometimes mean there are still sizes left when the most popular have already sold out. These were his latest score http://www.amazon.com/Moreschi.....38;sr=8-15.

MaryK, thanks for chiming in - I think we posted at the same time. Those Rockport shoes are very much like his current black shoes, and I will certainly pass on the recommendation. Unfortunately, I just think they are too casual to wear in his legal office (except on casual days.) We're looking for something a little bit more polished/dressy.

Yeah, I agree - men's shoes are much more expensive from what I can see, in general.

We'd still like to start out by trying out shoes in brick and mortar shops (we are very much "team store") before we resort to online purchases, though. We do have a DSW nearby - I'll have to bring him over and see if they have anything worth trying.

Recently, my boyfriend stopped working in an ultra-casual tech environment and started working in a professionally attired downtown legal office. We have successfully found him some nice clothes, but we're still hung up on shoes. He has one pair of shoes to wear, which is basically one step above an all-black tennis shoe. We really need to find him some professional shoes that work well for his comfort and commute needs.

Some specifics:
He has very high arches and sometimes needs inserts (not orthodics, though.)
His foot size is on the small end - around men's size 8
Budget is a concern - he'd prefer to spend no more than around $100 for a shoe, so that's *around* our price limit.
He rides the bus to work and walks around downtown during lunch, so although he doesn't have to walk that far, it is important.
My impression is that his feet are pretty fussy (his dad has similar feet and has a lot of pain/arch issues) and he will not wear shoes that he doesn't find comfortable, at all.
Edited: Aesthetically, he prefers a matte shoe and nothing too fussy/fancy. We'd probably pick a black shoe first, but he might add a brown shoe to his wardrobe eventually.

We actually found an excellent shoe at Nordstrom a few months ago - I *think* they were Allen Edmonds, but I can't remember for sure - but the price (around $350) was deemed to be much too expensive for his preferences, even though I offered to split the bill as a gift.

I'd welcome any ideas that you have. I'm also hoping to take him to the NAS and see if we can potentially find a hot deal on shoes that work well for him.
