Suntiger, that's a great idea - I might need to think in terms of two capsules ... hmm, thinking cap on. Thanks everyone!

I like having 2 neutral capsules, inc purses, shoes for all seasons. Mine are black and cognac, but since you have taupe already, that could be your light choice.
If you have an outlet mall nearby, that could be a place to check, as mine were in the 100$ range.

I have loved my tan/cognac bag that I bought almost 2 y ago when I was on a 70s kick. I have not owned one this colour before and it seems to go with almost everything. Of course you likely won't have the brand there but here are pics for the colour. The brand, somewhat ironically since we are so far away, is called "Colorado". I almost never change out this bag. Getting slightly beat up!

I bought this recently from Amazon - it is decent quality leather for the very inexpensive price. It comes in every color under the rainbow, including a fun red one side, navy the other with burgundy strap. It has three interior sections and the zip runs all the way around for easy access to everything, plus a small exterior zip pocket for keys.

Not Prime, but free shipping. I'm quite short in the torso so I had the strap shortened a bit at the cobbler.

I think there's now enough dark brown out there to make a play into this colour. As long as shoes and bag are both dark, the particular shade doesn't matter, I don't think.

Thanks so much everyone for the suggestions! Looks like the majority are on board with a brown of some sort, which is sort of what I had in mind, although now that I am looking I am remembering why brown can be tricky - there are sooo many different shades of it! How closely do shoes and bags need to match if they are both brown, do we think?

Lisa, thanks for the tips on those brands - I LOVE the minimalist, clean look of them and will keep my eyes out; who knew I could buy them at the bookstore?
Cindy, thanks!
Bijou, the Coach IS gorgeous, but a bit pricey for me - I'll check out Zara; I've had great luck there lately.
Elizabeth, I'll check BR; I think ink is a good second choice for me.
Runcarla, a color block might be the trick; I checked our local (sucky) Winners on my way back from a meeting; no luck but I won't give up.
LaPed, yes a pop in dreary weather is nice!
Joy, a metallic would be bright and fun!
Angie, thanks!
Roberta, I can see the appeal of gray. And I do believe 'dressiness' is a word :)
Cardiff girl, thanks, a deep tan would work nicely too.
Wish me luck in the hunting!

I am a bit envious of the plum bag - possibly the only color that I don't own. I have a cognac bag and a gray bag, and I'm here to recommend a medium gray leather, especially if you can find a metal finish that you like in the hardware. The gray shows well against black, navy, red, etc. It looks sharp against camel and of course, most grays. I have a Giani Bernini (Macy's brand) that I have worn to death and it was a very good price. They're always on sale. If you can find a nice glazed or tumbled leather, that ups the dressiness of the bag. Is dressiness a word?

I would go with a silver or pewter. It looks most like jewelry. Barring metallics, a taupey dark grey might blend with the taupe, and black.

My go-to crossbody is black. I've noticed that, because I mostly wear dark neutral outerwear in the winter (black and navy), I often find myself wishing for a bag that provides a bit more "pop" -- I like the idea of a warm tan/cognac/mustard as an accent. It's hard, because I love the look of black and navy bags, I just don't love the way they blend into black and navy coats.

I LOVE both colour blocked bags that Runcarla found!

Last fall I picked up a navy cross body from BR. I was going to a conference, so knew I was taking a tote to take my laptop, but wanted something smaller for evenings. It was perfect. Small enough to be "dressy" but big enough for glasses, wallet, phone, conference ID tag. Crossbody so hands free for receptions. Plus it has an outside non-closure pocket that I could slip my phone in for easy access. I don't see the same style there now, but I was very pleased with the quality of it for the money. Esp as I'm sure I got it at 40% off :) Sorry, no find for some reason, but I have a pic.

Anyway, all this to say to keep an eye on BR.

When I started reading your thread, the bag that came to mind was Gryffin's Drifter bag from Coach. Of course that is likely double (or more) of what you want to pay, but the quality would be excellent. You also have the added bonus of matching Gryffin!

Zara is my go-to for this type of inexpensive purchase, and a good place to look whilst you work out what style is best and will really work for you. Here are three options that I found on their website (although the Australian stock is likely to be different from that in Canada given the different seasons). Personally I like a bright coloured bag, so I added in the mustard bag, but it also comes in black. The bag that I really liked out of the ones below was the forest green.

I'd be tempted to go with a cognac or brown of some sort. Those shades with work with every single neutral you have and may want to add, and you can build on it with belts, other shoes etc. How about trying one of our (Canadian) brands that do faux leather bags under $100----like Matt & Nat or Pixie Mood? The Foundry (check their website) also has gorgeous bags - and they are Canadian too .

Hi friends,

One of the items on my fall shopping list is a 'neutral cross-body purse'. I sort of know what I need in terms of functionality and style; it needs to be polished-casual, big enough to hold my wallet, keys, and sunglasses, but small enough to not look like a tote (my le Pliage tote is still going strong five years later, but I would like something a little smaller and slightly dressier to grab when going out for lunch, etc.)

What I'm not sure about is color:

I have a plum crossbody and a red crossbody, so I definitely need a neutral

I have a lot of navy in my wardrobe

My fall and winter coats are primarily navy; I have one charcoal wool coat and a stone raincoat with black trim

My rain boots (frequently worn in fall) are black, I also have taupe booties, black flats, and am planning to get some chocolate brown tall boots

So - what color? Taupe to match the booties? Chocolate to match the boots? Black to match the rainy day stuff and flats? Navy to match the clothes? I know things don't have to match perfectly, but I do prefer a bit of a match with these items to polish my casual outfits off.

I feel a bit all over the place with this stuff; although I love navy for clothing, it's not my thing in leather goods such as shoes, so I feel like I need to pick one neutral here and focus on that going forward for things like belts, shoes, purses, so that I'm not buying tons of stuff and/or all over the place. Or maybe I need two neutrals?

Help!?!?

Also, suggestions of spots to look for decent purses that will not cost hundreds would be appreciate. Under $100 is the goal for this purchase. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
