I’m late to this thread but here is what I use. Here is what I have on deck for walking outdoors. It’s a layered approach so that I can walk outside everyday regardless of temperature. I’m in Ottawa and it is very cold here with considerable snow. I have a knee length down coat from Columbia-the one with omniheat technology. This is a hardcore coat and works up to -30. It may be good in colder temperatures but I haven’t tried that..yet. Ihave Columbia boots - mine are ankle but they come in taller versions. These feel like a sneakers and have reasonable grip. They can accommodate an extra liner if needed. I feel the coat and boots are critical.
I have a capsule of layering items that include leggings and long sleeve tops in two different weights. The thinner ones are from Paradox and are merino wool. I purchased mine from Costco. A total bargain. I have a set of thicker ones from Patagonia-again bottom and top.
If it’s very cold I wear a pant shell over the leggings .. mine are from Mec. They have a wind proof panel on the front thigh.
I also have a pair of Yak tracks for icy conditions.
I don’t think any of these are particularly stylish but I am never cold.

I like Patagonia's commitment to the environment, and I love these fleece lined leggings. I like the nubby fleecy ones for in the home. Plus my fave timberlands. Ugg makes some all weather boots that are extra cozy...and they don't look like Uggs!

Ann Taylor heard your request, up there in the Loft. Take a look at this plush bodysuit (you know I'm a believer in bodysuits) and velour sweatpants outfit. Add a long cardi and I think it'd be very cozy for curling up on the couch. https://www.loft.com/lou-&#038.....82&de

I just realized that this thread is the treasure chest I need. I’m getting heat tech ultra warm stuff for my dad, because he’s always cold these days, have been trying to figure out warm things my mom would enjoy wearing—long Johns will not make her happy the way they will him. So many good ideas in this thread!

I like fleece, fleece lined leggings or knit joggers for staying warm and cozy at home. I have a couple of hooded LL Bean flannel jackets that I love. I wear them as an outside jacket in the fall and as an inside layer in the winter. I have found some cute and cozy double hoodies from Ampersand. They have pockets (some side, some kangaroo) and long sleeves with thumb holes to keep hands warm. I am quite fond of the double hoods. One hood up for inside. Two hoods up for outside! One caution though, not all weights are the same. It is important to read the details.

Late to the party, sorry about that!

Would you consider adding a down skirt to throw on over the leggings? Even fleece lined tights/leggings don't keep me toasty when I walk outside on the coldest of days especially if there is a wind. Outdoor Research skirts are my favorite but there are many others around.

Also, my best fleece lined tights came from Title Nine. Cozy, warm and sleek enough to wear under the skirt without adding bulk. Good luck and I can't wait to see what you pull together!

I will throw in a recommendation for Darn Tough socks. Unlike the Smartwool that I walked holes in, DT will reimburse you for a new pair if you have any issues with their socks, even after years of wear! They’re not cheap but they’re really good, and come in various weights.

Don’t overlook Ugg for clothes as well as footwear. I have a super cozy poncho thing from a couple of years ago that I still love. And they make a really good cozy long cardigan too.

“ there just isn't that much else to wear unless you want to go a lot dressier. ”

That’s why I like to toss a mini skirt over all those warm under layers. It isn’t dressy, but it is something different and fun (at least to me—other people have different ideas of “fun”)

Just reading along with interest. I have zero ideas for this as I struggle mightily with it every winter. Mind you, I say the same about dressing for around the house in summer too. My deep winter collection is so boring and repetitive, but honestly, there just isn't that much else to wear unless you want to go a lot dressier. And I suspect that's not you

Your plan looks good. I love anything SmartWool and wear the no-show socks all year inside. They have changed their design for sick and now they have more seams, which my feet do not like. Something to consider with any winter socks.

Great idea to make up a capsule for deep winter. I always feel better if my outfits look nice, even if it is just for me and hubs hanging in front of the fire. I agree Uggs are super warm but mine were slippery out in the snow, so be careful of that. What about some cozy cardigans that you can layer? Maybe something like this? Now I want to do some Uniqlo shopping!

Echo Uniqlo! I am always cold, so from November to March
I wear a pair of longjohn/ leggings under my trousers. M&S does good thermal underwear as well. Wolford does super warm tights.

I'd also suggest sheepskin insoles and Brora cashmere socks, these are great to keep the feet warm.

I'm late to the conversation, but consider also (if you can wear wool) something like Icebreaker. Yes, it's gear but the merino layers are warm, practical, in a variety of weights -- I really like them. So much so that I have started stocking up on items at sales (because, yeah, price). They are very hard-wearing. Here are some of the winter pieces i have -- base layers and in-between layers. I bought them for hiking and skating and such, but I actually wear them quite a lot for loungewear, as it turns out.

I also want to mention Boden -- like Cardiff Girl, I noticed they have a big selection. So does BR, but I can't vouch for quality there -- could be great, could be awful! And you might also try Marks and Spencer.

I like my Sorel sneaker booties although I had to put a Superfeet insole to take up the extra width. Still, they are so warm and lightweight!

I have a thin faux fur vest that is great as lounge wear- covers the neck, keeps the body warm but the hands free, and it looks “intentional.” I think you’re right about leaning into it— just acknowledge how you like to dress in winter, and get cuter versions! Definitely buy lots of warm socks. I have zillions of smartwool socks so I don’t have to ration them anymore.

Ok, I am in no position to advice about winter clothing, but from what I understand starting with Uniqlo underpinnings is a great start. And some warm hats!

I am trying out the Altitude pants from Athleta. They may be stylistically confused because have a kind of mini- bootcut. So not sure they tuck into boots— I wear them over ankle boots or Gortex sneakers, since don’t need super snow boots but once a year maybe. I mostly plan to wear them at home or on semi- cold outings. do wear some fleece lined leggings occasionally but only for lounging at home. I also have fleece- lined jeans from EB. These are very warm and the denim outer layer is some wind protection.
But if it’s really cold I hang onto my old fleece lined ankle zip wind pants ( they may be a kind of snow pant) and I might layer underneath also.
For toppers I need short and knee length puffers, nano or regular.

FWIW, the pile lined joggers are a slim fit and slide right under my snow pants! (no pressure intended at all!). And the muppet jackets are sublime.

I couldn’t get myself to wash my new Uniqlo airism leggings because I wanted to put them on every day after I got them. So cozy, comfy, and warm! I bet they’d also work as long johns under the pants cjh mentions. I also like my Heat tech tights from there (in the medium warmth level), but they aren’t as warm. They don’t make sparkly ones ultra warm.

ETA, browsing Nic & Zoe just for kicks, I came across this, which looks awfully cozy for layering over your (Heat Tech) base layer. https://www.nordstrom.com/s/ni.....k%20indigo

Ok! You all have sold me on Uniqlo. Thank you so much for ALL the suggestions! I am going to see this as my "fashion" (ha!) project for this fall/winter - so I will add things slowly, but here's the rough plan:

The Uniform
Leggings + slim t-shirt + sweatershirt/cardi/hoodie + warm socks + ankle boots *** do hair and makeup to avoid being a shlump!! ***

Note: I like leggings because I can layer snowpants over them easily if I am going to spend time outside, but truth be told, the key purpose of this capsule is to make it easy to curl up on the couch under a blankie for three months :)

Essentials (I'll pick these up asap and work them in with what I've currently got)

Ugg ankle boots or similar (high priority) - black

Pile-lined leggings or slim joggers (high priority) - black

A warm zip-up of some sort that I can just throw on at home over anything - maybe one of the piled lined ones too (high priority) - neutral - maybe white? I'll see what's there

Warm socks (refresh)

To round out the capsule (longer term)

A couple of long-sleeved slim-fit tees to wear as essentially undershirts - I have a couple but could do with a refresh

A couple of "accent" sweatshirt-y type things - these might go on the Xmas list - maybe one patterned and one in a colour - I'll keep an eye on Fabletics although I've found their selection rather disappointing tbh ... but they do use fun colours and prints so we'll leave this as a wild-card slot

Check out the lined jeans because that is just beyond genius!!

Nemosmom - my kids both have the fuzzy muppet jackets - luckily I can just about wear their clothes, so I may have to pilfer!! :D

Thanks all so much! xoxo
