I think knee high boots are the ticket, but I would play with the color of the tights. I love gold and teal with navy so I would do a bright pair of tights with a tall boot (and socks if you are cold natured like I am!)

What I tend to do with navy skirts/dresses in winter is pair them with dark brown tights and brown boots.

I read a lot of people posting about nude hosiery, and I have yet to find any of that warm enough in my climate.

I find knee high boots a must. As well as an extra pair of socks on my feet if I am not wearing my shearling lined boots. It is COLD in Wisconsin!

Good, thick tights are also a must. I have not found layering hosiery to warm or comfortable.

As far as colors, that is a bit of a personal preference. I would choose navy, but I am very matchy matchy and don't much like bright colored tights.

These are all great ideas, thank you! Lyn, I always admire your outfits so I'm thrilled to see you were the first to weigh in. Love your yellow skirt and I see we have a shared love of polka dots :)

I had not thought of pairing this dark skirt with dark tights, but now that so many of you have mentioned it, I think I will give it a try! Mustard and wine in particular sound great. I noticed no one gave a yay or nay to either cream OR navy tights...are both of those too matchy-matchy?

Incidentally, I had a pair of mustard tights which I wore once before they ran badly and I had to throw them out (they were cheap, so no big loss or surprise). I never considered wearing them with the polka dots though...I guess I thought it would be too much?

Joy, I do not have a brown leather jacket though that sounds amazing. I have a navy military jacket that I think might work though.

I don't see the skirt on the link but will look again when not using a phone;)
I'd probably wear it with a chunky short white/cream sweater, nude stockings (maybe layered for warmth) and your cognac boots. Do you have a brown leather jacket?

I love the idea of charcoal or wine tights with the cognac boots, and on top a turtleneck sweater (wine, mustard, any shade of gray, navy), or a white blouse with a topper (jacket, pullover sweater, etc.). As for tights with pumps, for me that works if the tights are on the thinner side, not stockings but not really thick. As long as they fit really well and don't slip, you should be fine.

I side with Lyn! I wouldn't be afraid of chocolate brown, mustard, red, oxblood...possibly even purple if the top is right. :)

What about a pair of charcoal leggings? If you wear boots, you can wear leggings and heavy socks and no one will know.

I have worn tights with pumps before. Just be wary of the part of the tights by the toes, especially if you are wearing patterned tights or textured tights. Sometimes the fabric and stitching where the toes are reinforced can peek out above the vamp on your pumps if the vamp isn't high enough.

I don't often wear above-knee skirts in the winter, but if the skirt isn't particularly tight, I wonder if you could even wear a cheap, stretchy miniskirt under it. I bought some little miniskirts at Victoria's Secret ($20 ea.), and they are very small and stretchy. They might work in lieu of a slip if your skirt isn't too form fitting. That would provide extra warmth.

To avoid cold bare legs, wear nude stockings under micro fishnets in nude, or just go with sheer nude hosiery like Dutchess Kate. For more warmth, you could pop a slip, bike shorts or shapewear under the skirt.

LOVE the dot skirt!

I'd say this piece is pretty versatile - so I'd pair it with any colour of tights! Oxblood, mustard and dark grey jump out at me as easy colours to pair it with.

In the winter (I'm also a Canuck), I usually wear my tights with boots. If you wanted to wear tights with pumps, I'd suggest you invest in better quality tights because if they slide down and slouch during the day, that's a lot more visible with pumps vs. if they are just hidden inside your boot (usually around the ankle region, if that makes any sense).

I wear both booties and boots in the winter.

I don't know if the skirt is lined or not. Another thing you might want to invest in is a slip (mine is polyester, or silk), so that your tights don't cling to your tights and ride up during the day.

I have a smiliar skirt; I thought I'd just post a pic If you go through my WiW, I only wear skirts/dresses through the winter, and I live in a snowy paradise, so, hopefully I can give you some ideas! I enclosed a few pencil skirt shapes too, I don't usually wear them, so I had to dig a bit (#2-5); #3 and #5 is my dotty skirt :)

Hi everyone,
I have the polka dot pencil skirt shown in this magazine article: http://www.redbookmag.com/_mob.....13#slide-1 (pic 2). It's navy and off white. Any ideas on how I can wear it in the winter? Bare legs are out of the question (I live in Canada). So what kind of tights and footwear should I wear with it? I have a pair of cognac slouch boots which I'm thinking would work. Should I wear off white tights, or navy? Any other footwear ideas? I've worn this skirt in the summer with bare legs and nude pumps...but I've never worn pumps with tights. If it's possible, tell me how to do it please! Thank you :)

Edited to add a pic of me in the skirt (summer) for those of you who can't see the link.
