Lululemon has some great compression shorts on sale right now -- I think they're called "Sculpt" Shorts. They're more bike-short length than hot-pants length. Double as modesty shorts under skirts/dresses! They're my first and only LL purchase and I'm pretty impressed.

For winter pants, I pretty much always wear the fleece-lined stretchy trousers from Uniqlo. They're trousers, not tights, so better for walking/hiking than running. For tights I've always like Under Armour ColdGear. But I have my eye on the new REI Coop leggings to replace my ratty old running tights.

Up top, I alternate between Eddie Bauer microfleece 1/4-zip (which can usually be had on sale for <$20) and an Ibex Hooded Indie, which is probably my favourite cold-weather gear top ever. Exceptional hood and super-soft merino. Always a merino tee or camisole underneath. I'm a huge Ibex fangirl, though their sizing is inconsistent.

I love Lucy (heh). They've got really high quality stuff. It's a little pricey, although probably not as much as Lululemon, but really sturdy. I've got some capris from them that are probably 10 years old and still look new.

I agree with the Title 9 recommendation for finding sports bras - get on their mailing list and they'll send you a big catalog with all their bra options by feature.

Somebody mentioned Lorna Jane - one of our local malls just got one of their stores. I don't know if they're in your area yet, but apparently they're expanding into the US.

For outdoorsy stuff, like jackets, hiking pants, that sort of thing, I tend to get them from Eddie Bauer. Their line of Travex works well for both gear and casual/travel, kind of like the less gear-y stuff from Athleta.

I am really liking what I see from Lucy. Their stuff is just kinda pretty and not so techy which I like some days. I like Reebok yoga pants and capris just because they fit my curves best. I have Brooks running shoes because they fit my wider front foot and narrow heel. I am baffled by sports bras and got stuck trying one on that didn't have hooks. I thought I was going to have to hit the assistance button in the fitting room!! How do you ladies get in these things on a daily basis?

Moving comfort Fiona is the best sports bra ever. Super supportive, comes in bra sizing, and opens in back so you can take it off like a regular bra. I find it tts, but some people think it runs small (IMO it's a sports bra so it's meant to be tight for the best support.).

I can't really offer suggestions for other clothing as I work out at home in just the bra, short loose shorts, and sneakers.....

Carter, about the shoes. I have anywhere from 3-5 in rotation at any given time. I write the date of purchase on the inside cushy heel. Sturdiest are for out of doors, lighter for treadmill work and the weight room. With a routine and jotting down mileage in my day timer, I have a pretty good idea when the shoes are due for replacement. I stock up at sales when the New Years models come out and past years stuff goes on sale.

Like discontinuing a great lippy colour, or a favourite bra design, companies can't seem to resist tinkering with their shoes. Stock up when you find a winner!

Thank you all! I am hoping to get to LuluLemon and Athleta soon. I have some BR rewards that can be used at Athleta, so hopefully something there will work out. In the meantime, I have ordered a LuluLemon top to try.

I was thinking this morning how long it has been since I updated my gear capsule (other than the Nike capris, sneakers and 2 sports bras). I'm not entirely sure, but I'm guessing it's been 10 years. We moved into this house 8 years ago, and we have a gym in the basement. I've just been wearing whatever's clean. No wonder everything is falling apart!

That little jaw-dropper prompted a research trip to Sports Authority to scope out how things fit, how designs have changed, and what fabrications are available. I tried on a ton! (I only came home with 3 bottoms to consider.) It was quite the learning experience though.
--I HATE sports bras. Pulling those compression bras overhead (and removing them) requires contortions I am just not capable of doing without foul language. Also, in order to fit the girls I have to size up so much that the band is 2-3" too loose so raising my arms could get me arrested.
--It might need to be much cooler (it was 80 today) for me to objectively evaluate cotton based full length tights. The ones I brought home were poly blends (2 capri, one full length) and all Champion. I figure they'll set the bar to evaluate the value of Athleta and LuluLemon for my preferences.
--Bra tops are right there with sports bras in the not-for-me department.
--I've gotten so used to fluid fits that the more fitted tops (even without built-in bras) made me really uncomfortable. Also, the exposure from the way they're cut at the arms and back is something I'll need to ease into.

I have also ordered several different sports-looking user-friendly bras to try, plus a couple more pants. Looking forward to LuluLemon and Athleta soon. Thanks to Carla, I have a target age at which sneakers need to be replaced...500 miles. I walk between 100-175 miles/month (depending on whether I have any broken parts), so I should be replacing my shoes every 3-5 months.

Onward!

ETA: adding Lucy to the list. Never even heard of the brand. Turns out we have a store waaay the heck on the other side of town (home of those horrible "housewives"). I'll get out there at some point!

I just went to Nordies tonight to get some stuff. I need to get back into exercising regularly and going to start yoga.

My favorite bras are by Moving Comfort. I got them at Title Nine.

Shoes are so personal. I go to a real athletic store and try a ton of styles on. The best stores have staff to analyze your gait. I don't care about colors if they fit well. Current pair are Asics, neon orange and blue; goes with none of my workout clothes, but oh well.

Next plan is to lay out about four days worth of gym outfits to grab and go.

Carter, lots of great recommendations here. It dawned on me recently that my gear had become a hot mess! Except for a couple winter-weight layering 1/4 zip tops, I've replaced it all. I run a few times and hit a cycling class or two per week. I also walk/jog my wee dog daily.

For several years, I've been diligent at replacing my running shoes every six months. It used to be at the Nord half yearly sales (easy reminder), but now NAS and First of the year. ALWAYS Asics, one full size larger than street shoes.

I love compression bottoms and have the Lucy Endurance tights in the long shorts, Capri and full lengths. Nice zip pocket in the back waistband, and mesh pockets on the sides for my phone. Nice dense black. http://www.lucy.com/shop/botto.....tionId=4TC

I bought the Athleta bra/tank (I prefer pull-on to hooks) to test drive and loved it for both cycling class and running (I'm a B-C cup). My second just arrived today. Also, two Jockey compression bras to wear with tanks.

I also have loved Zella jackets to wear to the gym and also for running. And I really love the "kicky" back of this one.

Money well spent, I'd say!

Oh! Get yourself a nice gym bag that opens wide and is waterproof inside. Put together a nice kit of toiletries just for taking to the gym. If your gym doesn't have a towel service, get a few towels just for taking to the gym (I like the thin colourful beach towels sold at discount stores.). They are usually more compact than your household towels or bath sheets, and if you forget/loose one it's no big deal.

Gosh. I think I have more sports gear then 'real' clothes! Running bras are Champion, Sportek and Nike. They are basic pull on high compression. I'm medium to small up top. I do have some tank tops with built in bras - Nike, and Betty Design. The compression bras are all black and I wear them under t-shirts given away at races.

My 'bun hugger' running shorts are Lulu Lemon 5+ years and no issues. Yoga capris are Sportek, yoga pants Rebok. I have 3 weights of running tights that I use for running, cycling, and yoga and they are all from the Running Room. Fleeces from MEC. Nothing but Thorlo for sports socks.

Cycling (padded) shorts are Saucony and Sugoi. The best cycling gloves ever, and great cold weather outdoor performance gloves for any activity are Castelli (at better cycling/sports stores). Spendy, but worth it.

Nike came out with the best running shoes when I was a teen in the 70's, but now they are all about branding someone else's work. You have scored with Asics. All my running shoes in the pat 15 years have been Asics or Saucony. With a narrow heel and wide forefoot (bunions) i need a shoe that doesn't have a lot of constricting leather detail over the toe box. I train in a variety of Asics and race in Saucony Kinvera's. Every single one of my sports shoes - running, cycling, snowboard boots, etc. Have been fit with the green Superfeet insert. It adds $35.00 to every pair of shoes, but have provided me with the arch support I need to keep injuries at bay.

Swim suits are Speedo Endurance (special fabric handles chlorine exposure)' and Speedo Vanquisher goggles. They have to be replaced monthly. Short life span due to fogging is a fact of life. Swim cap with silicone. Last forever and is easier on the hair.

The take-away, Carter, is 1. Black Lycra can last an awful long time! And the Lulu Lemon products really are worth trying out for long term performance wear, however 2. Quite a lot of nice stuff (yoga pants, tops of various weights) can be got at discount. Since this is where you get your colour, don't worry about investing in long term and experiment with discount, 3. Spend your money on your feet! Good shoes (and they need to be replaced every 500 miles!) and the best socks money can buy! 4. If you will be persuing outdoor activities, layers are best, and though natural fibres are nice, the synthetics are pretty fab for performance.

Athleta has some great multipurpose workout pants -- I wear them for general walking and lazy (or housework) days around the house. Check them out for longer jackets too.

I have to put in a plug for Under Armour -- I got two pairs of long running leggings there a couple of years ago, and they are very nice. Warm but not too warm. I also have a workout hoodie and some tops from them that are comfortable and are holding up well. I can sometimes find UA stuff at Marshalls or TjMaxx.

Also, I have running capris and jackets from Lululemon that are going on five years old and still going strong. Their stuff is pricey , but I've had good experience without holding up well.

My go to sports bra is from Panache at Nordstrom, but I need a fairly high-impact bra for running, and it's hard to find a good fit for a small band size/large cup size. Moving Comfort makes good ones too -- I think Title Nine carries some of their bras.

Shoes for me are very activity-specific (running and cycling), so not much to recommend there.

Have fun refreshing this capsule!

OK, so definitely not an 'it' brand, but I just bought a pair of Marc NY fleece lined leggings at Costco for $16.99. They fit so well (no riding down my bum like other leggings) that I went back for another pair. My workouts aren't intense, though: a few am sun salutations outside (even in cold weather, so the lining is great). Costco's site is down at present, so I'll try adding a link later.

I do Yoga everyday (Hot and regular temp), fitness classes on occasion and lots of walking. All my Yoga clothes are Lululemon. So are my DH's. I have tried others but they do not hold up.
For tops I wear the Cool Racer Back Tank Top. It is the one without the built in bra. I wear a regular bra. I need one.
For bottoms I wear Crops for Hot Yoga. For regular temp I wear High Times.
I have a couple of jackets but I don't think they make mine anymore. I also have studio pants. They go over my Yoga pants so I look decent when I go to Yoga.
In the Winter I have fleece lined pants. I love them. Unfortunately Lulu doesn't make them anymore. :( They were called Dog Walking Pants. Perfect for me.
My shoes for walking are New Balance. I wear orthotics and they fit in these. Shoes are a personal thing. I tried many, many pairs before finding something that was reasonably comfortable.

Adding another rec for Athleta. It's a touch expensive for me, but like most UO brands, it's best to buy them on sale (especially if you have one of their company's credit cards and use the credit to buy pieces). They get bonus points from me for getting petite sizing, even if right now, their fall sweater/track hoodie selection is awfully tiny :/

My top is some cheap Puma hoodie that's light but I really love. Shorts are some old ones I picked up 5-6 years ago from Target C9--still going strong.

T-shirts are cheap things, sometimes my graphic tees that are too casual to wear outside otherwise. I have a Lululemon top that I picked up on discount in the store--it's nice, but I don't like built in sports bra and they don't cater to my short torso, so if you're a normal sized human, then it'll work out for you.

Sports bra is a very old Champion bra, but I just have the stuff that fits over my head--but I agree it's a pain when it's heavy upper body day (ugh, then it's like a struggle to take them off). I feel like it does the job though so I don't feel like replacing them until they start fraying at the seams.

Annndd..that's it. I'm just looking for sweaters right now and I just try to brave the cold in my cropped pants for now. When it gets colder, I'll just wear jeans on top of my shorts and a winter coat, undress and stash stuff in the locker. I don't like working out in long pants. Then again, I workout before work in the morning and I have that "luxury" but your situation might not be the same.

I have a real mix of gear, bought all over the place:

Shoes - Mizuno/Adidas and Merrel sandals
Tights - Nike, Gapfit, UnderArmour
Shorts - LuLu Lemon, Lorna Jane (Australian)
Harems - NZ cheap brand
Tanks and Tees - New Balance, Cheap NZ brands, Nike
Hoodies/Jackets - Gapfit, UnderArmour, Orca
Puffer - North Face
Bra - mix of Berlei, Nike (some crops, some bra shaped)
Caps - 2XU, Nike

My most worn are three quarter tights (I own 4) but I like to have one-two pairs of full length ones (currently only 1) and a couple of pairs of shorts (currently 2) for the heat of summer. I also have some harems which are good for the odd walk.

What I currently do not own are long sleeve wicking tees which I will add to my list for winter gym workouts (our gym is very basic and not warm), park sessions and winter walking, and for wearing to and from the gym in the morning (it is often very cool at 5.45am when I leave).

I won't offer any specific recommendations except that for me Nike and Underarmour tights seem to fit well in both the thighs and waist and stay up - and are quick dry and long wearing. They say the underarmour ones do not need washing after a wear - I don't test this.

I workout 5 times a week on an average week and like to have enough to get me through at least four sessions although I wash clothes daily and do not have a lot of bottlenecks. I have a good range at the moment but will add a new long sleeve tee and a new tank at some stage this summer.

Carter- the shoes are quite wide- I have real problems with narrow shoes and these were comfortable right out of the box- seriously wore them for 5 days straight in Manhattan walking miles. My feet cramp up in narrow shoes and I had no problems (felt like I was wearing slippers LOL). To my eye they look less frumpy than the skechers gowalks (which I have and love) and look less athletic than my Nikes (which I have worn in the past for city-walking). They have a lot of styles- DSW carries them so you easily try them on and order if they don't have your style/color.

Yep, they're totally that price. Mine were even cheaper because I had 20% or 30% off with the Kohl's card. The Kohl's card is TOTALLY worth it if you pay it off every month. Makes no difference how often you use it, either.

I hear you about keeping covered. I haven't seen a true tunic length jacket, but Athleta has a pretty good line of dresses and possibly cardigans that might be long enough and easy enough to get into. They're all too straight for me, so I typically layer a gear skirt or skort instead. I have this Gaiam one as well - called "Studio to Street," so you nailed what it is for! The Find only shows pink and blue, though mine is black and that's all they had in the store. Gaiam has other cuts/colors of skirts, too.

Some rave reviews for Lululemon (lisap and Ummlila). I've never tried anything from there, but I am loving the speed pants, Ummlila. We seem to have a couple of their stores in town, so I will make it a point to get over there to see what all the fuss is about:-) The Sweaty Betty bra is adorable too!

Lisap, the NorthFace lined running tights sound perfect for F/W walking. I will track some of those down as well.

Ginger, that's exactly the shape of jacket I had in mind. I would like another 8-10" in length to make sure everything is covered as I walk down the street during rush hour. The leggings you posted are on sale for $10?? Does that sound right?

Sadie, I like the low profile look of those sneakers. All the reviews look great too. Did these replace your Skechers GoWalks? How's the toe box width on them? They only come in Medium. My right foot just can't handle being squished these days. What do you think?

Great additional feedback on the Salomons, KL! They do sound like they might work for me.

I recently bought and returned the Salomon Ellipse GTX; I would recommend not sizing up. I ordered a half-size up (necessary to accommodate toe length) and have been unable to find shoes that don't slip on my already-narrow-for-true-size heels. The Salomon failed for my particular criteria, but for wider feet it sounds ideal. I believe the footbed is removable for custom orthotics, but JAileen would know that better.

I like Sweaty Betty Reistance sports bras the best. They don't have those annoying inserts that slip around in the wash, but they also don't show through. http://www.sweatybetty.com/us/.....rkout-bra/

Lately I'm wearing Nike hoodies (I have a very light grey and a black) and love them. http://store.nike.com/us/en_us.....d-10967899

I wear a vest from Athleta or a Patagonia Nanopuff vest over them if it's chilly. I will soon be going to Patagonia Nanopuff zip jacket over them. http://www.patagonia.com/us/pr.....?p=84216-0

I like Lulu Lemon speed tights in the outdoor brushed weight. They always have some version of them. http://shop.lululemon.com/prod.....e?cc=16437 I also have another pair That are called High Times and find them great for classes -- high waist, stay in place, slenderizing....

Saucony gore Tex running shoes are a mainstay. They fit my narrow at the back feet well and stand up to field, stream, and woods, where I am most days. I wear through them quickly. Here's one version http://www.saucony.com/en/ride-7-gtx/13615W.html

Low profile indoor training shoes are Nike Bionics.

And I always wear wicking shirts. I hate cotton t shirts for working out because they get damp and smelly fast. I'm not super partial to any brand but I have a few from Nike that are making m happy lately.

What i do in all of this: TRX training, Pilates, yoga, daily short run and daily walk with my active hound.

This Gaiam jacket is incredibly flattering and IMHO adorable for running around in. I'm not sure if it's quite tunic length, though. The TekGear leggings are by far the best fit of any I've found - extremely comfortable. (They say they're Juniors, but I'm definitely not and the L-XL work fine.)

I'm a Lululemon fan for yoga and the gym . I've tried every other single brand out there (it seems) and no-one matches them for the kind of feel and stretch I prefer in workout gear. I wear North Face, Patagonia and Arcteryx for a shell for walking in the fall (over a cool wick long sleeve top) , and for to and from classes. I just bought a new North Face Thermoball which is the most awesome jacket ever I wear Asics for walking too. North Face also has excellent heavier/lined running tights that are perfect for fall walking .
