I think a wool or wool blend, single breasted, button front, mid thigh length would be a great option for you. It would look good worn open or closed and would provide some dressy structure to your outfits. I'd pick whatever bright colour that you really like, and not worry that it won't go with everything.
Later on you could always add another trench in a neutral.

Hi again CF --

That coral orange coat would definitely brighten up winter days, and yes, LE does know how to keep one warm/dry!

I do think that style tends to look better open, too; as much as I love the luxurious-looking wrap front ones, the ties have to be dealt with to wear open!

Re finding coats you love that are above what you want to spend -- tis the season for random sales. When I'm looking for something specific, I subscribe to a lot of retailer emails as well as the conglomerate "price watch" ones so I'm aware of promos. It's kind of a PITA to UNsubscribe once you've found what you want, but....

When I was browsing coats for you yesterday I did notice L&T had a promo running that might or might not work for anything you want to try. I'm sure others are/will be following suit.

L&T mid-length wool coats (may be eligible for current 20% sale)

I would say go for a lovely wool coat.

I would check JCrew and see if those are to yo liking.

I have had a lot of luck with Lands End, but then they are one of the few places that sell coats for weather as cold as it gets by me. If my weather were milder, I would look closer at these:

http://www.landsend.com/produc...../id_274225

http://www.landsend.com/produc...../id_264588

http://www.landsend.com/produc...../id_258751

There are quite a few more.

You have some great suggestions. I like the idea of knee length light weight wool coat. It will look equally nice with pants or skirts/dresses. I have had my eye on the Lands End one for a while. Another thing to consider if it is a zip up - that a double zipper might be needed for bike riding (the J Crew one is a zip I think).

Kkards, I like the look of that Land's End coat - especially in coral orange. And at that price, I would be OK with getting tired of it in a year or two.

Great questions, Vix!

32-36 inches in length.

Definitely single-breasted.

Neck does not need to close completely.

Modern classic, minimal detailing. A bit of arty drape is nice too.

Bloomie's had two I like the look of (though these are a bit above my price range - I'd like to stay below $500). I wonder how these would look open, though. In fact, final desideratum:

must look good both open and closed

Don't ever look lands end and llbean.
I'm liking a couple of the options from lands end,but esp this one, which seems perfect for your climate and the I think the length would work for bike riding, plus it seems to be on sale today.

Hi CF --

Your preferences in terms of flattery were mine when I was hunting for a few years, so I know what you mean about it being harder than it seems to find some picks.

Especially knowing you'll be biking in this, could you add a few more items to your desiderata (new word for me, love it!)?

Length in inches that gets you to mid-thigh and knee length (height/body type make this different for everyone)

Preference for single- vs double-breasted (or open to either)

Preference/requirement for neckline -- will you need one that can at least be worn closed, or would you always fill in with a scarf if needed?

Style preferences -- streamlined modern classic, a bit of edge, special details, kind of sporty etc?

Ideal price point/range?

I had the whole color vs neutral debate too; I think you'll love whatever you get so say go with your gut. [If you find a coat that meets the majority of your needs and it's a neutral and it makes you feel good, go for it and accessorize with color. And if you fall for a color-color coat, do the inverse.]

I tend to wear more all-neutral outfits in winter, and was flip-flopping about blending in with a neutral vs standing out with a color-color. I had very specific colors in mind and never saw in a style that appealed/flattered, so -- neutral won out.

I do think reds, burgundies, cognacs, and deeper greens/blues all fall into the faux-neutral category, so if you wear any of those all the time perhaps they'd be the best of both worlds for you in terms of not getting sick of the shade but not going with a true neutral.

In terms of length I much prefer ~ knee-length with skirts/dresses and even pants for both looks and practicality. [Don't forget if it's windy most coats that length will blow open to about mid-thigh in the front.]

Given that you'll be biking in it, maybe think about whether you want to be able to sit on the coat a little/lot or not at all?

In terms of brands for the silhouette you're thinking about, I agree J Crew is a place to explore. Lots of the higher-priced coats do come down, so I'll also suggest Lauren Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Mackage, Fleurette, the VERY spendy Cinzia Rocca (included because sometimes they end up on crazy-sale...like 300 vs 1200!).

For sites: Lord and Taylor, Bloomingdales, Saks, NM, Nordstrom, and the "conglomerate" sites that let you see prices across a variety of stores.

Good luck!

Viva, I love that coat! I had my eye on it in cream. (Although would a cream coat one wears to bike to work need dry-cleaning every three days?) But it is really too heavy for my climate.

In terms of warmth, Rachylou's suggestion is probably right on. I want something that looks a bit more like a winter coat though ...

Last year I bought a JCrew wool coat, hip length in a nude pink, on consignment. I love that coat. The color is neutral, the weight is perfect for cold but not frigid days. You may need to think about how fitted you want your coat to be. Will you want to layer a jacket under it? The new man coats and cocoon shapes seem ideal for versatility.

I will be watching this thread closely, CF, as I am on the same hunt. So, it seems JCrew really is the best place -- or at least, a good place to look. Their lady day coat is a classic that actually fits your ideal silhouette to a tee. (And, it's probably one I should at least consider, too.)

ETA: I love this bittersweet chocolate color, which would look amazing with pink and orange toned scarves.

Seriously, you don't want the fuchsia? We should talk...

But, as to your coat hunt. I like the idea of a wool coat. For sure. And it should be anywhere from pea coat type length to knee length, it sounds like.

For colour -- if the collar is open you could always wear a bright scarf. That might be a smart solution for you since you are attracted to colour but tire of it. That way, you could inexpensively rotate the colours near your face and buy a neutral coat, which might not be as exciting but would probably give you a lot more wear.

Or, then again, you could just go for serious colour! (It comes in neutrals, too.)

I need a winter coat! I bought one at NAS, but returned it after Angie pointed out that it fit exactly the same needs as the coats I already have. I have:

a gold puffer http://www.uniqlo.com/us/produ.....01.html#01|/women/outerwear/ultra-

a dark grey softshell, something like this http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/la.....r-petite/3

a fuschia trench, which I might purge (and send to Suz if she's still interested)

an off-white, gear type trench

a light leather jacket

I live somewhere with dry, mild winters, but still, only the puffer is warm enough to be a real winter coat.

The desiderata:

I am unsure about both color and silhouette.

If I were to pick a silhouette for figure flattery alone, I would pick a mid-thigh to knee-length coat with a structured shoulder and a defined waist. This does not seem like a popular shape these days.

Color, I have no idea. I am attracted to super bright colours, especially pinks and oranges, but also tend to get tired of them fast. Almost all my bottoms are dark neutrals.

Help me, forum!
