Thanks Dianna! It turned out to be a fancy cheese and cider pairing dinner at the Met Museum (for members). Usually it’s food and wine that they do. I love cheese and cider, and it was amazing.

Marina it's a good idea, but I think I'll return the dress. I tried it on again today (it had been a couple of weeks), and while it is flattering in the middle, I was letting that cloud the fact that it's weirdly blousy up top. That said, I think the blue flats would be good, as would the shoes I just got (see above). Ah well.

My first thought when I saw your dress was flats, so metallic blue flats sounds like a pretty good idea to me. But that's probably because I usually find open shoes more flattering when it comes to mid-length.

Well I found some shoes, which I can’t add a find for. The shoes definitely fill a wardrobe hole. I may just pass on the dress though, and return it while I still can, for the reasons outlined above about how tricky it is to style when it’s not summer. For some reason, I was having a minor meltdown over this, so I appreciate everyone’s help. I’m really not lacking dresses that will work, but was feeling a bit down on myself. I can see the need for the shoes in my wardrobe, regardless of whether I wear them tomorrow.

Donna and Sisi, it is the length that’s the problem, but I think it does reveal hole in my shoe wardrobe - I do seem to lack something moderately dressy that’s not summer-only or winter-only. Believe it or not, I actually really like this length of dress on me, and I have no problem styling a midi length in the summer or with boots in the winter.

That all being said, I’m leaning towards the blue flats rather than buying anything right now. I’ve had my eye on the Dansko’s even before this, but I don’t really have time to scramble to buy them since I didn’t order them yesterday.

Sisi, I need something more than a light shawl to wear over it at work unfortunately. I get pretty cold there. I do have a berry pink cardigan, and since there’s pink in the dress that might work.

The problem really is that the dress is too summery for the weather we will have on Friday, but I want to wear it anyway. At first glance, it seemed like something I could transition more easily to fall, but it turns out not. But I fell in love with the idea of wearing it anyway. Maybe I should pick something else and consign this to summer only wear ( I can probably still return it, as I bought it for an event in the late summer that I wasn’t actually able to attend after all.) I just really do like the feel of it on me right now, which hasn’t been the case for all my dresses. Sigh.

ETA: I’m making this too complicated because I’m in a sensitive place about my body and dressing it. I should just use a shorter black dress that I have, which will have more closed toe shoe options among what I currently own. This dress should probably go back since I don’t like to keep a one season item in storage if I never managed to wear it. It would have worked for the event I originally got it for, but oh well.

This dress seems so complicated to style that I was going to suggest you to pick another one but then I read that you want to wear it. This type of length is terrible. I think it would look nice with a gladiator-style sandal with the right heel. I suggest go check the stores because you understand what is the right heel for your porportions only when you see it on you. As per the topper - black cardigan sounds too Wintery to me. Do you have any lightweight cardigan or shawl or mesh poncho in a more Summery color?

It seems to me that the length of that dress is what presents the challenge in terms of proportions. Does it hit you in the same place as the stock photo? And do you have other dresses/skirts at this length? I'm worried that if you get shoes just for this dress they may not work as well with the rest of your wardrobe.

Juniper, happy birthday to you too! It’s a long story, but my husband has to miss my birthday due to an event he participates in every year that just happens to fall on my birthday this once. I decided not to be mean enough to make him miss it, since I don’t care which day I celebrate (and expect awesome guilt-induced gifts!). I think we are celebrating this early because he got one of those MasterCard Priceless City events for me, which he’s done before. Those are usually one time only events.

I have some taupe booties, and hadn’t thought about them. I think the shaft maybe too wide for this dress length, but I’ll try. I’m definitely going to DSW tomorrow at lunch. My real birthday present to myself will be a spa day while my husband is away, though!

I like both of those sandal options but maybe a quick trip to DSW is in order if you're not confident with either of them. I'm a firm believer in gifting yourself excellent birthday presents. Maybe a pair of low heel booties in a sand or taupe color?

And happy early birthday, fellow Libra! I'm chuckling about your dressing dilemma - my husband is also taking me out Friday for my birthday and wanted to make it a surprise, but I twisted his arm into telling me our destination because the fun of planning and anticipation is greater for me than the thrill of a surprise :)

JAileen I think metallic shoes solve most of life's problems.

I've been building my wardrobe of sneakers and flat sandals and avoiding my needs for moderately dressy occasions in cooler weather. The bronze Rockports work a lot of the time, but not all the time. I got rid of a few things that weren't comfortable anymore, but never got to replace them. It's a challenge to hit that sweet spot of dressiness and comfort

Jaileen, I think my closed toe shoe options are boots, sneakers, flats, or high heels that are too dressy and hard to walk in... it's still been in the 80's here, so I'd have to refresh my memory about what else I might have. The shoes I'm not using have been in storage under the bed. This dress has clearly revealed a hole in my wardrobe! I have some relatively low black wedges that I can't picture with this dress either. Too heavy.

My feet don't get too cold, so I'm not all that worried. But a closed toe might be better. Maybe something like these Danskos?

A high of 70 isn't that warm. I'd want to split the difference between casual and dressy. The cardigan sounds fine. If it were me, I'd want closed toe shoes so my feet didn't get cold. It's a pretty dress!

I have this dress below I'd like to wear for a mystery early birthday event on Friday, and I expect clear weather with a high of about 70. I've been told the kind of dress I'd wear to work will be dressy enough, but I don't know what we're doing. I don't mind that this dress reads more like a day dress than a going out dress. I will NOT have time to go change after work. My problem is that I don't have a lot of semi-dressy shoe options for wearm-ish weather, and my feet are fussy.

I have the bronze Rockport sandals below, which are my go to option for dressing things up a bit, but I've briefly tried them with the dress, and I think the proportions don't work. I don't think any of my flats will go. I have some black block heel sandals from Clarks, also below. I'm leaning towards the Clarks, but I don't think they're perfect. Does anyone have any other ideas or types of shoes? I can order quickly from Amazon or Zappos, or see if something is in stock at a local DSW.

I'm also not sure what to use as a topper: fitted cardigan in black maybe? My denim jacket may dress things down too much, but that's usually what I'd wear. On the other hand, I may only need the topper for after the event and my office during the day. I think it will be too warm for my leather moto jacket, and my other go to, a utility jacket, may not work.

I am busy the next two nights, so I'm not sure I have time to do pictures of me in any of this. I want to wear this dress because I do feel good in it, and that's been tough lately since I've been pretty bloated (recurring problem of mine). It drapes nicely without being either shapeless or clinging to my belly. However the styling is stumping me a bit! The stock photo styling with the flat mules isn't doing much for me, either. If I switch dresses, I may have the same shoe problem, though I expect the bronze sandals to go better with a knee length dress.

ETA: I tried the dress on again this morning (it had been a couple of weeks). It does work around the middle but I realized it's blousier up around my shoulders than I'd like. Since I'm still within the return window, I may return. I have plenty of other dresses. The new shoes I got (see comments below) ironically would work with the dress, but I'll just pair them with something else I have (since my need for something somewhat dressy but closed toed and comfortable remains, even if I switch dresses.) Thanks for everyone's help on this journey that I overcomplicated!

ETA: again - final outfit pics. Used a LOFT dress I have had for a little while. Plus new shoes.
