fashiontern, I called their Customer Service and they told me which stores had it in stock (very few!). I called a couple till I found one that had it; they are out of my state but I was able to order it from them and they will mail it to me. I'm impressed with their Customer Service (both central and at the stores I called) all around. Way to soothe a fashion obsession! Now let's hope it fits once it gets here...

You should be able to pay online right now for one that’s in a store “near” you, and then take a few days to go pick it up.

fashiontern, thanks again! I'd been checking that link on ON and it showed the nearest stores with the dress in stock were about 26 miles away (which I can't do on a regular day...). So I was planning to go next weekend, then all of a sudden the "Find it in Store" button disappeared!

I was even thinking of calling Customer Service to see if they would ship it to me from the store. I'm refreshing the page regularly and the stock keeps fluctuating in both size and color, but still no luck with my XS Burgundy...

KM, I assume you’re also using the links to “find it at my store”? The stores can have them in stock, even when the central warehouse doesn’t.

Angie, I'm crying a river (no sarcasm) over the Target "A New Day" dress not fitting well. It does look great in person; on their mannequin it looks like a million bucks. I am sure you and everyone else here will understand how sad we can get over not being able to obtain a very wished-for clothing item...

I'm checking the ON site several times. It keeps going out of stock and back in stock but never in my size. I still have hope...

Dress update: I tried this on today at Target and although I was pleasantly surprised by the material (it looks a lot better in person, darker and with a more delicate texture), the fit was awful. First, it runs very large (I tried my usual XS, the smallest size available; it was so oversized I can't possibly imagine in what world that is an XS, especially since I've tried other items from this line--A New Day--and they fit perfectly). Also, there is a drapey twisty detail at the waist that looked completely wrong on me. It looked fine on the mannequin at the store, so I think I'm just too small for it. On the upside it might work for some of you, so if you're interested I highly recommend trying in person. Really, the fabric is very nice.

There's a similar one at Old Navy (see Find below) but it flew off the shelves and though I keep stalking it online my size hasn't showed up.

So as of now I feel quite despondent as I really had my sights on a burgundy velvet dress with a similar shape as these...

Zaeobi, I'm sure the skirt will be too long on me from reviews and from the model stats. I am short and I'm used to getting everything hemmed, so I'm thinking to get it hemmed right below the knees.

These are so, so beautiful. I could not pick one over the other. So I am literally no help at all. My only comment is that I do not think velvet will be dated in a flash. In my mind, it is always lush. It can be dressed up or down.

The skirt will be versatile in principle but, from what I can see, isn't it midi length? Where exactly does it fall on you? And how tall are you? It may not be as versatile as you initially thought if it only comes to a flattering length on you with heels!

I know midi skirts are in right now, but the length may make it look dated later (before the most recent wave of midi skirts, this style did look a little frumpy to my eye). Unless you're OK with shortening the hem later, I'd say the dress hem would stay current for longer.

At least with Target you can have the dress shipped to the store for pickup, try it on there, and return it immediately if it doesn’t work.

Thank you for all the replies! It seems from the responses that I might need both Well, at the very least I might need to try both... As many of you mentioned, fit will make or break the deal. I'm small-chested so the dress might require some fashion tape. And I'm short and the skirt might require hemming. If only those were sold in brick-and-mortar stores where I could go try them... (Not a fan of the whole shipping boxes back and forth...)

Hmm, I think skirts always seem like they will be versatile but in reality you often need items specifically purchased to work with them. Do you have many other skirts and do the things you already own work? I just think dresses are easier, I guess, and the one you posted is very pretty.

I adore velvet anything, but like the skirt the best. That dress looks lesser quality thin velvet to me, at least by the picture. I could picture that velvet skirt with some black fishnets, or patterned stockings, some cute black flats, and a lacey white blouse, then a leather jacket over it for nighttime. Wonderful.
I bought an emerald green velvet jacket last year which I look forward to wearing this holiday season, and just bought some burdundy velvet fur lined mules, love love.

The skirt, for maximum variety. The lines, length, colour and quality all look great. You can wear it at different occasions for years to come, and it will not look dated.

Dress it up with blouses/tops in lace or silk and chic shoes in patent leather or suede. And dress it down with tees, pullovers or checked button-front shirts and boots. For even more variety, add a waistcoat in leather or fault fur.

I don't think either of these would date quickly, they seem pretty classic. I agree that the skirt would be more versatile but love the hem of the dress. Maybe you need both! :)

Velvet is a classic party staple. Burgundy is a classic pseudo-neutral color. As long as the garments don't have details that will date them (80s shoulder pads, embellishments that can be traced to a certain era in fashion, etc) then you can't go wrong with a burgundy velvet midi skirt ir wrap dress IMO

Another vote for the skirt, because I think it would be easier to dress up or down. But, honestly, I’d choose based on fit, and how well the piece works with the rest of your wardrobe.

I think you could also pair the skirt with a dressy blouse and some elegant shoes and it would be very dressy. That doesn’t mean I think you should get it, just that it’s more versatile than you suggested.

karen13, good questions. The dress would be for Christmas Eve and a concert (not on same night). The skirt, I'm not sure, as it seems less dressy. I was even thinking of wearing it for work with a turtleneck as shown and booties or knee-high boots. I have some slim-fit tees that would likely go with the skirt, although I am obsessing about pairing this skirt with a pumpkin top (sweater or tee), which I don't have...

I don’t think velvet is ever dated for a festive fall/winter/holiday look. I’m like both of these pieces. The wrap dress looks pretty classic to me, as does the skirt.

Which one do you have events to wear it to? Do you have the right supporting pieces for either. I hated it when I buy an item, but then have to buy three other things inorder to wear it.

I would love to add a velvet item to my wardrobe this season. I'm debating on these (see Finds below):
1. Midi velvet skirt
2. Wrap velvet dress
I love them, but I wonder if this is the kind of thing that will look dated in a flash...
