Have a great time! I performed in the Tattoo in 2007 - it was an amazing month but I didn’t have time to see the city much, with a show every evening. I wore my rehearsal uniform most days: khaki pants, tee/polo, and water resistant, light fleece lined jacket. The weight was about right for the weather. It was useful to have the jacket all the time.

My old group is actually back in the Tattoo this year - it’s an American Revolution era fife and drum corps. Wave at them for me if you see them!

We were in Scotland for the first half of July, and the weather was a lot warmer and drier than normal there. I understand that has changed a little since we left, but I think it's safe to say that you should expect milder conditions than past experience might suggest. That said, I think closed-toe shoes will be more useful than sandals. Heavy rain is unlikely, but drizzle / heavy mist happens, so take whatever you need to feel comfortable in that.

I missed your question to me in your reply a month ago.

Good memory, yes, I do keep a pair of wellies there!

And how different is it to the Maritimes? Totally. That being said, they are having a heat wave this year, so anything I may say may be moot. The basic difference is it's cooler, and damper. Highs are generally mid 70's (except this year) And the weather changes not overnight, but in about 20 min. Esp on the west coast. Take layers, waterproofs, EXTREMELY comfortable footwear.

Will comment more when I see your real plan evolve.

We’ve been on holiday in Scotland in August and I think it’s safe to say expect a range of weathers.

I think runcarla is right about her recommendations. For shoes, I’d take my birkenstocks, my plimsolls, trainers and walking boots and Chelsea boots of space would allow. I’d also take dark opaque tights!

L'Abeille - I pulled out my trip info and will post in Off Topic when you start a thread there. DH and I walk miles and miles either in the city, or I hike while he plays golf. We get cross country by train or bus for the most part, but might rent a car for a couple of days. We come from a family of train lovers! I have some restaurant and B&B recs as well as some sites worth checking out.

4 things I always find room to pack - flip flops (for the hotel/inn/B+B) which I use in lieu of slippers and great after a day of hoofing around. A hat. Gloves or fingerless mitts. A pashmina shawl.

FWIW I don't pack a lot of toiletries unless I'm very partial to a specific product. Instead I have the adventure of a trip to a local Boots or some such place to get what I need. You can get tester sets of high end products that include a face wash, toner, and cream as an additional treat for yourself. Use the space to pack a zip lock Baggie with a sampling of first aid supplies (band aids, ointment). The best shoes in the world with good inserts and amazing socks, and you (or someone you love) could still end up with tender feet!

Follow up on the shoes question. I was at a work conference and brought three pairs of shoes that felt in place in the city — brown tall boots to go with dresses and skirts (usually worn with tights) and two pairs of ankle booties (one black, one burgundy). I also bought a pair of Chelsea booties at Clarks (it was a HEWI item for me rather than a desperate need to fill a packing mistake).

Carla’s outfit pictures are fantastic and so appropriate for August in Scotland.

Having been there in August, I'll have recs on your off-topic thread.

I went in 2012, so I can't remember which shoes I had exactly. Probably hiking boots, since we'd also been hiking in the Lake District. Probably also some kind of dressy flat, since it was my honeymoon. Probably also sneakers, and I can't remember if I had sandals but am guessing no. The cobblestones in Edinburgh are a consideration, as well as the fact that there are a lot of stairs etc because there is an upper and lower layer to the city.

Thanks everyone!

Christina, there are FIVE different festivals running concurrently in Edinburgh during our time there. M. Abeille is booking us as fast as possible.

JAileen, my three daughters were highland dancers so M. Abeille has already planned for us to attend a Highland Games. Although I am hoping to get to see the Tattoo as well.

I am going to start a new thread in Off Topic for itinerary advice, what not to miss etc. So I can use this post to agonize over what to wear/bring.

Elizabeth, I know you go regularly and will have lots of good advice. Don't you keep a pair of wellies there? How different is their weather from our Maritime weather in the same season?

Barbara, Inge, Toban, and Carla: Yes, the dreaded shoes question. On my Vienna trip, some activities were curtailed because my city walking footwear didn't pass muster. For New York City, I was prepared with two good walking sneakers that I alternated between, and a ballet flat with lacing for the dressier occasions. Those ended up too fiddly for sustained use. But I do want one dressier but still functional item, to go with shorter hemlines and skirts.

I was planning on bringing a pair of very supportive sandals to fill that role, but wonder if anything open-toed is wise, especially with all the Chelsea boot comments. I have two of those: a rugged menswear version, and a pointy-toed one that is actually a welly. Should I bring one of those instead, and then sneak in a ballet flat for a dressy/feminine option?

Carla, your list and photos are really helpful, even more so because of our style similarities. Was yours more of a walking (non-urban) holiday?

DH and I joke that we bring the sunshine when we travel, 'cause we've been to the UK 3 times, and it never rains! However, our experience seems to be the exception! We go for a month at a time and last went for the entire month of September. I remember cool mornings, warm daytime temps, then cooler evenings. Layers worked best. (Don't they always!) We travelled by train and other public transit and rolling carry-on suitcases.

Shoes: sneaker, Chelsea boot, loafers
Tops: long sleeved t-shirts, cotton knit turtlenecks
Toppers: jean jacket style, leather bomber, and a short trench to layer for cold and in case of rain
3 pairs bottoms: jeans, and 2 others
One dress
*really good socks - smart wool

Some pics below from the September trip

I was in Edinburgh for the last week of August last year for work. Street style was jeans and booties, especially Chelsea/Blundstone style flat and rugged boots. A lot of cobblestone. A rain jacket and warm layers were needed. If I recall correctly, it was never warm enough to uncover my arms. I always had a jacket with me. I picked up a great burgundy rain jacket at Marks and Spencer that had a light fleece lining (it had been on my wish list and there was a great selection).

First and foremost it may rain anytime, any day, so having your waterproof hooded jacket with you at all times is a must! Two pairs of shoes that can get wet are a must! Jeans aren’t the best as they take too long to dry if ( or when) they get wet. Scotland often feels damp, so even though the temperature may be warm enough the dampness will make it feel cool, so a light merino wool sweater is a good idea.
You mention that you are travelling between Glasgow and Edinburgh. There is a delightfully, charming city between the two, Sterling. If you have a chance it is worth a visit. And not far from there is Doones Castle where the Monty Python movies were filmed, if you are a fan! (I’m not but it was an interesting medieval castle)

We went to Scotland in August 2004 or 2005. Our son played the bagpipes in a band and so we went to the World Pipeband Championship. (He wasn’t competing). If you like bagpipes, and you’ll be in Scotland August 17th or 18th, you *must* go. When we went, there were around 200 bands. It was amazing and really fun.

https://www.theworlds.co.uk/pages/home.aspx

As for packing, the day we went to the championship it was very warm and sunny. Except for that day, it rained every single day, and there was even flooding in the Speyside area.

This is not about packing and maybe you know this, but.... if you will be in Edinburgh during the fringe Festival, which is all of August, and you plan to stay there, you need to book a place to stay now. If you haven’t already, since this does sound rather last minute. That said, I think it’s easy enough to take day trips from Glasgow. My understanding is Edinburgh during the Fringe is really a different place than the rest of the time. That’s the only time I’ve been, though.

From what I recall of Scotland in August, the weather is not too warm (65F or 70F at most) and there is usually at least one bout of rain each day that passes. You will need a waterproof layer and shoes that can withstand that. Jeans maybe aren’t the best bet anyway, since they stay damp.

Rather last-minute summer vacation plans: 12 days in Scotland in August (has been on my bucket list for ages).

We will fly into Glasgow and rent a car. We'll do some road tripping and spend several days each in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Maybe a country walk or two but no serious hiking.

So. You who have been. What do I bring?

I'm prepared for weather like our June has been (from warm 25'C down to single digits at night) and possibility of rain anytime. I have a decent white urban-appropriate utility jacket, waterproof with a hood. What do I do for shoes? I'm not really a jeans person. I will update as time goes on but looking for recommendations, even links to previous YLFers Scotland wardrobes.

Thanks!
