That sounds like a magical trip, L'Abeille, how very exciting!
And yes, that's the annoying part about travelling to Northern Europe in Winter: the weather is just so unpredictable. And you could have it all, sunny, freezing, warmer, rain, or snow in a matter of weeks or days.

If you are definitely bringing the plaid ski jacket then I would risk the cloth coat for Vienna (like you said, if push comes to shove, you could wear the plaid jacket in the city too). Is the cloth coat wool, L'Abeille? I don't have any personal experience with these, but have been reading about how several fashion editors and other women who like to be dressed up add an Uniqlo ultra light down collarless puffer vest or jacket under their wool coats as an extra layer for warmth. Perhaps that could be an option, as they pack very compactly?
http://www.uniqlo.com/us/produ...../outerwear...~

http://www.uniqlo.com/us/produ.....women/feat...~

The silk longjohns are a great idea too. Perhaps pack a silk or thermal top for layering on top too?

Warm and comfortable boots/shoes for lots of walking are a must (I'd personally bring at least two pairs), warm socks too:-)
I see you already have the scarves covered. A hat and lined gloves might come in handy as well. Umbrella can be bought on the spot if you should need one.

Thank you all for the well wishes! And thank you, Adela and Rachylou, for the words about weather. That is one of my questions, although from what I read it couldbe above or below freezing, rainy or snowy or sunny.

Another of my concerns has to do with formality. I am assuming from the little I have read that the Viennese tend conservative/dressy. I know I won't be mistaken for a native, but I really don't want to be shlepping around the museums in my plaid ski jacket from the men's section of Sportcheck (hey, it was the only place I found shoulders and sleeves to fit me). I toyed with getting one of those collapsible down puffers, but it won't be warm enough for skiing and I've never felt fab in a down coat. Could i get away with a cloth coat (I'm thinking of my red one, which has a lining but not a heavy interlining) for Vienna? I will have my silk longjohns anyway so I can layer under my clothing if needed, or just wear the plaid if it is THAT cold.

I expect to take multiple mix and match black pieces (ponte pants, a skirt, an LBD) that I can dress up and down with scarves. Walkable leather dressy boots and some ballet flats for indoor pursuits. What am I missing?

For skiing I always wear leggings under my snow pants, and multiple layers on top ending with a huge yak-hair knitted sweater from nepal, which can't e beat for insulating properties. I know no one else (but my daughters) skis in one of these, so i should be able to manage with less bulky layers, but am a bit nervous about it. We do have a brief ski trip in Quebec planned this weekend, that can be my trial run. If it keeps me warm in Quebec, it should handle the Tyrolean Alps.

Austria in winter is beautiful, Vienna magical. The cold snuck up on me. I mean, there was snow on the ground, but it didn't seem that cold to me... Until it did. Cover your head and ears is my advice, lol.

Another fan of Vienna! Yes, I agree, you will need good walking footwear, and as it is January, I recommend warm waterproof boots- there are many available that are chic enough for the city. I live quite close to Vienna and it can be cold and wet in the winter, of not at all, so I would stay on the safe side and take a waterproof, (maybe down) coat...
But in any case, Vienna is a great shopping destination and you can buy anything you need there!

Vienna is the most beautiful city I've even been to, you'll love it. I can't help you, as I have no idea about their winter climate... just make sure you take VERY good walking footwear!

Dear Fabbers I need your help! At the end of January DH and I are going on a bit of a dream trip: 4 days in Vienna followed by 3 days skiing in Kitsbuehel.

Time in Vienna will be spent sightseeing, going to musical events (sadly DH doesn't want to go to the opera, but there's plenty more), and sampling coffeehouses. We will have a rental car, but I expect to do a lot of walking.

My biggest dilemmas are outerwear and boots. I will have gear for skiing plus city clothes for the city, hoping to overlap as much as possible to minimize luggage.

Any advice, tips, recommendations, suggestions? I'll post more details in a bit.
