Thank you, everyone, for your additional thoughts. I think you're really onto something, rachylou, with the stuff about up and down and a sensation of length. Maybe, I wonder, is this one of those things that actually doesn't translate that well into real life? I mean, we don't really look at people head to toe most of the time, do we? We look at them seated or concentrate on their heads/shoulders. Sort of the RL version of sculptural busts, cut off below the collarbone.

I tried out a casual version of an outfit today, with a navy long loose sweater and grey jeans. I took pics but they turned out terribly as it's rainy and dark today, so I'm not posting them. The outfit doesn't feel blah, although I worry that it doesn't have any interest for the eye to go to. I'll try to do some more knockoff outfits and get some decent pictures to share with the forum.

I'm really liking Violeta! Thanks for turning me onto them, Laura. What I see is visually long lines, created in large part by toppers, which are pretty long, fairly soft, fairly bulky. Tops are fairly soft and drapey too.

I went back and looked at some of your WIWs by contrast:

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....y-everyday
In this first one, the top is fairly stiff of fabrication and the sweater is thin and shorter / same length as the top.

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ummer-ffbo
In this one, the dress is soft, but you're not getting a sensation of length. I think a long pendant necklace would change that.

Actually in both, I think the eye is taken to your neck, your collar bone, and there's not a lot of up and down. I'm thinking that's maybe why you might feel preppy.

The first thing that struck me hard when looking at your other post was the strong reliance on neutrals. I think your wardrobe may be more colorful than this.
Try going into your closet and pulling out only the neutral pieces and putting together outfits from just those pieces. I'm curious if that will give you more of this feel and less of a preppy feel?

Aha! You were posting them for the rest of us. I see. You sure you don't just have coat envy? (Ha ha)

Seriously, I think it's a great idea to analyze the photos to see what, if anything, is different from what you can achieve with your own closet. Your mention of denim, combined with Angie's outfit post on Casual Light Grey and White, makes me wonder if a pair of gray jeans might be useful. They could give you a casual, denim basis to achieve this subdued color palette.

Caro, I suggest you're right - tbh, until recently I dismissed Angie's talk about fluid tops because I never thought it would work for my body type. All the pics were on skinny typically model sized ladies, but in these pics the Violeta girls have a figure shape closer to mine.

Carter, good point that the color schemes are key too. I've been drawn to low and medium contrast outfits recently so that's probably some of the appeal.

Suz, exactly! They feel current but not too out there, which is exactly what I'd like to achieve. There's nothing wrong with preppy but it ends up feeling too buttoned up and humorless on me. Btw, I tried a blouse from them as well as some leggings, and the blouse was a bit snug and short so I returned it. I'm low on budget right now, otherwise I would buy a ton of stuff from their sale to try - I've got 11 items in my cart right now (!).

Firecracker, I don't really need a new long coat - I hardly wear them, to be honest. (Hides from the cold weather people.) I just thought they were cool and that others in colder climes might like them. An asymmetric, larger coat might be nice to have but I wear them so seldom I don't know if they'd be the wisest purchase. Maybe a jacket?

It's occurred to me that one of the things you don't see in any of these outfits is denim, particularly faded denim. Hmmmm.

Laura, a lot of what you picked out were coats. Are you in the mood for a new coat? All of those looked very current, a less fitted style, almost boxy, and yet flattering with asymmetrical closures. If your coats don't give you that current look, it might be worth investing in one during the sale. It could have the effect of freshening your current wardrobe.

Laura, it is all in the cut and the fit. As well as the reliance on solids and colour blocking.

I totally understand the appeal of the items you showed -- they look subtly less preppy and conservative, clearly more modern, and while classic and simple, they also say "fashionable" in a way that makes getting dressed an easy proposition.

Have you tried any items from this line IRL yet? It might be well worth doing so, just to see if they are cut for your body type.

It may also be a question of proportions and how you wear the items.

In a way, your question is like mine earlier this week. I am wanting to make my style a little less preppy (even though I don't mind a bit of prep).

Wow, Laura! Really love some of these looks. The ones that most appeal to me seem to be all neutrals, low to medium contrast, lots of tonal looks. They also seem to have that elusive "effortless" look about them. I think you can definitely pull off these looks. Maybe pick a few to copycat?

I'm not sure if I can help. The only difference between these & what I think of as preppy (I'm in Australia remember) would be the slightly over-sized feel of these tops - do your clothes have that sort of feel on your body?

What about taking some photos? You don't have to post them if that doesn't appeal but take them then leave them for a few days. I've found that coming back to something after a break gives more clarity.

I've been feeling a little frustrated with my wardrobe recently, and then when looking at all the sale stuff at Violeta I fell deeply in love with all of it. After the first flush of delight faded, I realized that I actually have a lot of similar items in my closet already, but something is keeping me from feeling like I'm getting a similar feel in my outfits. Aside from, you know, a professional photo session and makeup artists and hair stylists, which I can't do much about, what are the elements that you see that I could incorporate?

Here's what I've come up with so far:

fluid or semi-fitted fits, rarely bodycon, especially not on the top half of the body

rarely prints, and those are strong, not twee

solids, mostly neutrals

clean lines

classic pieces, but done in an almost blank, normcore sort of way

not too much layering (paradoxically?)

I think one of my issues is that when I go with all classic pieces, it ends up looking very preppy, whereas this doesn't seem preppy to me, or at least not American preppy, more European subtle classy.
