Admittedly did not try any of these on today, though I saw similar at Macy's, and maybe a year from now I'll be wearing these myself, but for now I just can't wrap my head around this style. I don't see the sense in it. Boots = socks to me. What good is a closed-toe boot you can't wear a sock?

*head explosion*

That said, they are totally cute. I will live vicariously.

I just saw a sneak peak of the spring LD Tuttle's at Lambs Ear Shoes.
Anyways what about The Image in Lapis

http://ldtuttle.com/collection/spring-summer-2014/

About 1/2 way down, on the left.
Shopbop and Saks stocks this line as well, and you'll have to stalk them because they are above your price range. But I have seen them go to sale.

Omg! Pil! Those are awesome! I am totally ordering. :D

Nancy, I do have a black insert (although the better one is blue) but it still looks obviously like an orthotic from the side (hard to explain, it's kinda plasticky looking). But the everlys are just too strappy and open. Those blue miistas that Pil just linked have a lower opening but it's quite small, so I think the wide upper strap might hide most of the footie. Hoping at least...

But yeah, I know I get ridiculously specific about my shoe needs for whatever reason. :P. gold zipper boot search is on hold for now. If it appears, great, but I am sick of looking.

Anyway, I ordered the Nicole booties from dsw and the blue miistas. Stay tuned....

Ha. Still remembering the search for your gold-zippered black boots (did that ever pan out?....)

I'm glad you are getting some promising suggestions. I also wonder what the insert looks like, and whether you could take a black marker to it to lesson its visual impact.

That's probably because I really really really like the Everly.

Thanks, Sona. I didn't know about the free shipping at DSW now. I think I'm going to give them a try. (They claim the tan ones are available in the boston store in my size but I don't really feel like making a trip downtown.)

Diana : just checked the side view. Not the size of an oxford but I feel pretty confident you should be able to put a footie inside and it would not show. DSW has free shipping (over $35) and returns now so that helps!

Thanks, everyone. Lots of great suggestions to check out.

Sona, how high would you say the sides (below the cutout) on the Nicoles are? In the DSW photo it looks like it wouldn't be tall enough to hide the side of a footie. I would like it to come up to maybe the height of the side of an oxford.

Rute, it's amazing how fast Zara's stock changes! I think I looked last week and didn't see anything, but now there are several options. I like these but wonder if perhaps they seem too similar to my midcalf Frye Veronicas.
http://www.zara.com/us/en/woma.....751067.htm

Gryffin, I did keep the EF Coax booties and I love them. I know Angie thought they were a little too heavy looking but I was specifically looking for something with that style of sole (thick platform and chunky heel) because that's the only way I can wear 3"+ heels.

I'll see if I can find anything like that. But also, I recently bought some little toe-cover things that I can wear inside d'orsay flats to protect my toes from blisters. They were from Hue and similar to these, but a previous design that I got at the Rack:
http://www.hue.com/Socks/Foot-.....overs.aspx
http://www.hue.com/Socks/Foot-.....overs.aspx

So I adore the look of cutout booties like the JC Everly (pic 1). However, they are not practical for me for a couple of reasons. One, I must wear socks with closed toe shoes. No socks is not an option for me as I get blisters on the top of my toes in virtually all closed toe shoes, no matter how comfortable. Footies are fine; that is what I wear in my oxfords. Two, I usually add a rigid 3/4 length orthotic to most non-comfort shoes. The thinnest ones I own add maybe about 1/4" in height to the footbed, but the bigger problem is that it will show through a cutout that goes all the way to the sole as in the Everly.

I do think these types of boots can look cute with visible socks, but I don't really want to be limited to only that particular look. Or tights, as I am currently very down on tights anyway for comfort reasons.

Anyway, the ideal thing for me would be something that looks like the Everly but where the cutout part only goes halfway down. That way I'd be able to wear footies and use my orthotics.

Other requirements:
-real leather.
-heel height around 1". Not over 2" or under 1/2". I have 3 pairs of >2" heeled booties right now and I really need a flat (for me) option.
-8 hour shoes for my fussy feet!
-slim ankle/instep fit. Although I think this style (with the buckles) avoids FPE for the most part.
-color: black, ink blue, teal (ha! I can dream, right?), or dark grey. Would consider other dark colors if NOT BROWN.
-Bonus points for gold hardware (but silver is fine too).

-ETA price not over $300 although I'd prefer under $200.

I found these Kurt Geiger ones (photo 2), which look interesting. But I wonder if anyone has seen anything else that fits these requirements? I would honestly prefer something a little less refined than the KGs.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/kg.....l-1-5-FTR-
