How about Petit Batauax (spelling?) - mostly the do children’s clothes but they also have a good range of adult basics. Good quality and hard wearing. Another brand is Seasalt which is a uk brand and may not be available in Canada.

I have several second hand but my favorites are a Lands End navy and white stripe rash guard ( nice drape, enough length) and a Talbots linen navy and cream stripe because of a slightly oversized fit with banded bottom to add structure.

Thank you for asking. I own a st James one.. like it a lot but don’t love it, but was still thinking of duplicating in a different color Own a Boden- honestly I’d like a little more room in the bust, but I’m afraid if I sized up the rest of the top would be to big. Will look into some of the recommendations here

I’m looking for one, too. I’ve never ordered from LL Bean. Any size recommendations? I wear petite 2 or 4 in BR, S in Zara and prefer a boxy cut.

The LL Bean ones are very, very good but I like St James, and they make different weights and styles. They're not inexpensive but they hold up very well. The heavier weight ones don't usually need any pressing, but the lighter weight ones can have wrinkles that are smoothed out by tumbling in the drier for a few minutes after air drying on a rack.

Ha, this is right up my alley— my mariners are a wardrobe essential in my closet. Here is my take—based on what has stayed in my closet vs. what got tossed after a few wears.

The LL Bean mariner: I’ve owned several over the decades, but not currently in my closet because I got bored with the boxy fit and wasn’t fond of the lighter fabric in today’s versions. Definitely worth trying, though, for all the reasons stated by Elizabeth.

The “authentic” Saint James Breton Stripe: Pricey, but lovely fabric in the sweater and T-shirt. Found the cut a bit short and boxy—also the French unisex sizing made for an odd fit around bust because of my broad IT shoulders. And did I say pricey? Still in my closet but thinking of consigning.

Joules Mariner: Substantial fabric which washes well and I like some the stripe variations which are available. Price is reasonable for the quality. Stays in my closet as I prefer the cut to the boxier LL. Bean mariners, but probably won’t replace when it wears out. https://global.joules.com/Wome.....?id=200440|HSTFNAV

Boden Mariner: Just purchased the T-shirt version which Mr. G gave an enthusiastic thumbs up for the fit. Fabric isn’t as thick as the Joules which makes it easier to layer. Has been washed once and still looks pristine with no shrinkage. Looks promising. Price is reasonable and Boden shipping is very fast, but I haven’t tried returns yet so that is still unknown.

J Crew Mariners: Some were good and some were horrible. Right now, I’m very pleased with my striped “PerfectFit” T-shirts which still look good after a year’s wear. The fabric is not see-through and seems to resist pilling even through dozens of laundry cycles. I have both the long-and short-sleeve versions, and really like the longer sleeve length on the short-sleeve versions. I also like the cut which gives my rectangular mid-section a bit of shape without being fitted. Bought on sale, so price was very good for this workhorse. https://www.jcrew.com/ca/p/wom.....hirt/J1638

I’ve cycled through other brands like BR, Club Monaco and even Costco over the years with mixed results, but the hits have been smaller as compared to the misses. For example, the Angie-recommended, striped BR terry version that Suz mentioned stayed in my closet for a couple of years with very little wear; the cut looked good but the heavy, almost rigid, fabric made the top too hot to wear if the weather was warm but the looseness of the neck made it too cool to be comfortable when temperatures dipped. Finally passed it on in my closet cull last year in almost new condition.

Elizabeth's right -- I wear the LLBean ones. They are not good for blistering hot summer temps because they are more substantial, but they do perform well year round in different contexts and they drape and skim nicely. I wear them as tops (mostly semi-tucked) and also as sweaters in the summer layered over sleeveless tops in the evenings. I care for mine as Elizabeth cares for hers -- washer, and then air dry. They last for YEARS and you know that they are in very heavy rotation because we share that signature element of style.

I also have an Angie pick BR top from a few years ago in french terry. It serves a slightly different function. It is less drapey and a bit less classic (due to the side stripes). And it is pure white.

And I have the J. Crew grey and white tee with zips, and the Zara short sleeve blouson style, which is also a fun twist on the classic.

I've been hearing good things about the breton tees from Joules.

I can second the 'LL Bean tee. The Boden ones are lighter weight and also fabulous, but the Bean version is both substantial and comfy. I bought a size up for shrinkage and was glad - I don't have the patience for hang drying. I've got two colours and will probably get more.

If it were white and not cream, I'd have it in black as well.

Anyway...

It's brilliant. Heavy cotton, lovely drape (skims, isn't baggy), and washes beautifully (I let it hang dry, no idea what it would do in the dryer). What more can I say? I took it traveling to Scotland last summer and it was great for cooler summer evenings. I wear it in the winter under zipped up hoodies for casual. I believe Suz wears hers as a sweater as well, but I haven't tried that.

Highly recommended, and often on sale. Colours come and go as well.

I am down to 2 Mariner T's and a striped cotton knit sweater with blue on cream stripes. The T's are in high rotation and starting to show wear. I would like to bolster my collection, since the Mariner T is signiture to my style. The Armor Lux T's are very thick (warm) and a little body con (slim fitting). I would like to find lighter weight T's (but not sheer or tissue weight) with a looser, but not baggy, fit. 3/4 or long sleeves.

Who makes your favourite Mariner T and why do you like it?
