I do like the Levi's idea. Since they're at Zappos (free shipping both ways!), and since it's all but impossible to get my man to try on anything in a store, I may order several sizes and washes and have him try them on at home.

I was going to suggest Levis too, April. We sorted out my 80 year old day with them in July and he bought 2 pairs. He is as happy as a clam! I couldn't believe how hard it was to find mens jeans in a dark wash sans any kind of distressing. Ridiculous :(

But Mo's BF's jeans look as promising!

These aren't premium, but they are good jeans:

Levi's Men's 514 Slim Straight - a kazillion washes available:

http://www.zappos.com/levis-me.....bled-rigid

Just $39 and free shipping from Zappos. They look a lot better in-person than some of Zappos' photos.

Here's a link to these on the Levi's site (prices vary) - pictures are a bit better and there are newer washes available etc.:

My BF is also in his 50's and not the most trendy dresser, although I'd definitely say he is stylish. But, yeah, no skinnies, no blingy pockets. He is quite slim with a 31/34 pant size, so many jeans don't fit in the legs or butt. We tried on over 20 pair a year or two back before we got him Citizens of Humanity jeans at Nordstrom. Jagger bootcut and Sid straight legs. No crazy washes or whiskers. Not the cheapest at around $150, but soooo much better than the Levi's he wouldn't wear anymore because "they are just too uncomfortable and stiff."

My husband is a size 44 and is also a fairly conservative dresser. He has actually had good luck with Banana Republic dark wash, bootcut jeans. Also, Cutter & Buck bootcut jeans from Nordstrom seem to hold up well and look nice. I air dry all our jeans so I don't know how they'd do in a dryer. Both are fairly inexpensive options (around $100 or less).

My husband likes Alberto jeans. They are pricey but they look great and don't bag out. He's a slim build and many of the other brands are too wide through the legs.

My hubs (48 years old, but a little more rock'n'roll than conservative) likes Lucky Brand, Hudson and 7ForAllMankind...when he can actually find his size. 36" inseams are sometimes hard to find, so when he does find some, he stocks up. These all seem to look current without looking too young/trendy.

SO/DH has recently lost a few pounds that have been bothering him (him, not me) and I would love to help him celebrate by finding a great pair of jeans in his new size.

He's a pretty conservative dresser and is in his 50s (i.e., no skinnies, nothing wacky or overly trendy). Dark wash preferred.

Suggestions?
