I'm one of the Frye fanatics But I also have had some Ariats in my collection.

You're looking for some Western flair but not all the way Western (e.g., Tony Lama boots), right? I like Lenni A's suggestion of Ariat boots, maybe
http://www.zappos.com/product/7820291/color/301047 (a bit more than your limit)

For Fryes, I think the Billy style is the most "Western." Carsons are also Western style, but much more minimalistic:
Billy:
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....ly-pull-on
Carson:
http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....on-pull-on

You can often find Frye boots for 50% off, which would bring them into your price range.

Good luck and let us know what you come up with!

My cowboy boots are by Ariat and they are very comfortable to me. They are cushioned and feel secure. I found them true to size. My feet are wide across the toes and balls of my feet, narrower at the heel, and high in the arch, and I have skinny calves as well. I got mine at a Cavender's store on a trip to Texas. I see they have free shipping/free returns, though I do think boots are a lot easier to pick out if you can try them on in person. Mine are these:
http://www.cavenders.com/produ.....d=AR006310
You can check their sale section for lower priced boots: http://www.cavenders.com/speci.....dept_id=25

Fryes seem to be very popular with our little group of ladies, and they do carry a number of styles/colors. Perhaps some of these: http://www.thefryecompany.com/.....le:western

Too bad you're not looking for black ones! I have a pair that are a size too big on me (I purchased them while living in a cold climate and needed to wear VERY thick socks) and I can no longer wear them now that I've moved back to SoCal... Off to Buffalo Exchange they go, I guess.

ETA: Obviously, these don't fit the price you have in mind, but I was thinking you could stalk them on ebay, 6pm, etc...

requirements:
up to $125.
preferably understated ( an oxymoron perhaps!)
comfy
I wear a 9 in regular shoes and usually need to size up to 9.5 in boots due to a wider right toe box.
my calves are pretty skinny.
prefer a tan sort of color.

would prefer if you have personal experience or seen someone in a pair that you/they liked rather than a random search. Merci beaucoup in advance.
