It can get incredibly hot in the Midwest during the summer, so pick something you can stay relatively cool in, and find a light topper for when you're inside and the A/C is on (and trust me, it will be on, unless the weather pattern is different than it usually is). I've spent many summers in the Midwest.

I remember we threw a surprise 40th anniversary party for my parents. I was very pregnant and wore a dress I had made. I look back at the pictures (and someone even made a video!) and what we wore didn't matter. The happiness on everyone's faces is what I notice. Also it makes me very nostalgic as my father has since died. I hope you have a wonderful time with your parents.

I would not try eShakti as well. -.- Anyway, shirt dresses are now my thing! I want one dress Angie posted recently- Cloth & Stone Nila Dress from Anthropologie ( http://www.anthropologie.com/ ), I love the color blue! Plus some of the dresses from Milk and Love. I'm preggy, yep. ( http://www.milkandlove.com.au/.....g-dresses/ ) Both can be made into maternity wear. I better invest on these.

I'm sorry, I would not try eShakti. Everything I ordered from there has not worked out.

I'd go over to macy's and put in your size and price range and go through the 358 size 16 dress options! There are 41 that are fit and flare.

You have many lovely dresses posted here. Just a thought. Your parents probably came of age when women only wore dresses so that may be expected. However, if your mother is not wearing a dress, you may want to do a pant outfit or culottes. My own mother on my parent's 50th celebration was in a wheel chair and no longer wore dresses for modesty reasons when being lifted in and out of her chair. For that reason my sister and I wore pants (I wore a jump suit). Make sure that your mother's outfit is the fanciest, not yours. It is her day.

The Ivanka Trump dress that Inge suggested is gorgeous! Asos has a bunch of floral patterned dresses for less than $100.

Ooh, some great possibilities to start with, thanks. Rachylou, I don't think super-fancy - it's a small town, people don't really do anything dressier than 'good church clothes'. I've never done eShakti since the reviews have been so inconsistent, but I have enough of a lead time I could give it a try...

laura--try Dressbarn, they cover both missy and plus sizes, so lots of choices, plus as the name implies, lots of dresses…and generally under $100.

I think there are some really pretty floral print dresses over at eShakti. They feature sizes 0 through 36! (Never heard of size 36). I think you can customize the size as well. Most things are under $100. I like these:

http://www.eshakti.com/shop/Dr.....-CL0040387
http://www.eshakti.com/shop/Dr.....-CL0040328
http://www.eshakti.com/product/CL0040191

There are so many choices, and you can customize for a bit extra. I haven't tried them but I think others have, I noticed forum member Ginger listed them as a favorite retailer.

My parents are celebrating their 50th (!) wedding anniversary this summer and are planning to throw a big party and invite friends and family. I need to find a suitable outfit, and this sort of thing always seems to take longer than you might think, so I've been looking for a month or so and haven't found anything great yet.

It's going to be in July, at their house in the midwest US, likely on the back deck, so mostly outside rather than in a/c. I believe the time is going to be late afternoon into evening. So it will likely be humid and possibly buggy but I still want to look nice and cheerful and summery. They're getting a caterer to do most of the logistics but I'm sure I'll end up hauling chairs around or getting ice or helping people park, so I don't want to do impractical shoes or anything too ornate, which I don't think is necessary anyway.

My first thought is a cheery summer dress, maybe with a fuller skirt because it would be more breathable. I'd love to find something in Ted Baker-esque florals (preferably a little cheaper though). As some of you know I'm a cusp size and tallish, so if it's a misses' brand it needs to run up to a size 16 and not be too short. I have a hard time finding dresses since I'm a pear and bigger on the bottom. I'd like to stay in the $100 range unless it is something amazingly spectacular.
