Awww, thanks for checking in!
The answer is hahaha, noooooo. No new date night footwear as yet. We haven’t really been going out, which has reduced the urgency a bit (and is its own kind of issue, grumble grump). And I feel like there are so many “capsules” that need attention right now (she said, sitting on the couch with her elbow poking through the hole in her lounge sweater).
I did thrift a black/gold metallic tank and bought a pair of black/silver sparkly socks for my date night capsule but haven’t worn either yet.

Jenni NZ I am definitely inspired by your use of metallic footwear!

Christina those are really nice! I like the subtleness of the metallic. Too shiny/futuristic doesn’t seem quite right for me.

Jussie I think that formula would work really well with your style, please steal away!

Yeah Sarah I'm thinking that your skinnies must be very skinny at the bottom, because Suz's pics show similar styles to my pics, what I have called skinny ( not actual jeans though).
Metallic sounds good! ( No surprise for me to say that, right, me of the new bronze booties)

Suz, thanks! These are helpful visuals. Looking at your photos, I'm guessing that my skinnies will be too skinny to wear over booties, but I'll experiment a bit.

I'm homing in on the idea that a somewhat dressy, possibly metallic, higher-shaft bootie might be a good solution for this conundrum. I think such a thing could get wear outside of evening-out outfits as well.

I do like those Aquatalia sock booties, especially at that price! (They are sold out in my size though.) Sock booties have not been on my radar but now I am seeing how they could be helpful, and could fit with my style. This is all very interesting.

I haven't read all comments yet or followed all links, but...

1. I agree with Jenni that there is no reason you have to wear cropped jeans with short booties -- full length jeans will work with booties or shooties if you prefer.

2. You can also wear skinnies with sock booties -- absolutely! I do it all the time. Most of my booties are higher shaft to wear with cropped jeans and many of my jeans are skinny or slim.

First two booties in Finds -- I would usually wear with a sliver of skin (or stocking/ sock) visible and rolled/ cropped trousers.

Other booties -- I would typically "close the gap" -- i.e. even cropped trousers would cover the top of the booties.

I also have higher shaft boots/ booties that I wear with skinnies outside or tucked.

Not great examples necessarily in the pics but the best I could come up with.

Thanks, Well Dressed Guy. Yes, it's fascinating how a lot of this is as much about how outfits feel as how they look. Lots of thought processes to unpack.
I like those glitter boots, fun!

Yeah, waterproof + longer length are key for rainy weather around here. I bought the black one maybe 5-6 years ago. The zip-out liner makes it great for varying temps, but I would always hit a point in early March where I would go: I canNOT keep putting this coat on every day for the next two months! So last year I decided I wanted a navy coat for spring. Oh, I ordered and returned so many. So many! Finally I thought: hey why don't I just buy something that I know will fit?

Two! Mine is navy. I bought it mainly for travel. It doesn’t really rain here, it only snows, and it’s not warm enough for snowy weather, for me anyway, unless really layered up. But I’ve worn it a surprising number of times. It’s great for wind!

I have the same coat! I would wear boots/booties with it. If it’s cool or wet enough for that coat, it’s too cool or wet for ballet flats. Mostly I wear booties with boot cut jeans. My climate is different, though, because that coat isn’t warm enough in the evening this time of year. I’ve been wearing a wool coat with a quilted lining.

WDG mostly the latter. Here’s a ballet flat that I own in a couple different colors:
https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/s.....at/3194852

It’s a great shoe, but the sole is very thin, and the upper is quite unstructured. So yeah, not great for protecting the feet from winter.

And, this model is my winter coat:
https://www.patagonia.com/prod.....28567.html

Perfect for my chilly, wet climate. But, the ballet flats don’t really “stand up” to the coat if that makes sense. When I wear the two together I feel “off,” and the combination seems seasonally confused.

Re: tall boots, I think part of the issue is that tall boots and skinnies are SO ubiquitous to my cold weather everyday style that I’m drawn to find something different for evenings out — I want to switch it up, a break from my usual style that reflects the break from my usual life. But, the reason I lean so heavily on tall boots and skinnies is they are so dang practical! So it makes sense that they would be practical for evenings too. I do have a pair of black tall boots that are relatively dressy. Their heel is close to my 2” limit but still very comfortable. It may be that I need to reframe my thinking about boots and develop some night-out outfits with these boots that I’m excited to wear. I need to think on this some more.

Well Dressed Guy that’s true, cowboy boots aren’t really my style. With the current Western trend that means it’s hard to find booties that appeal, yet we must persevere. Re: jeans color, I do own black skinny jeans, and could wear them in this outfit formula. The finds I posted were just meant to indicate general silhouettes, not specific items or even colors. But, assuming black jeans, I run into the same questions: what footwear? Tall boots feel too everyday, ballet flats too insubstantial with winter gear, etc. I genuinely think this is a category problem, not a color problem.

did, but that sounded outside of what you were looking for, so I wasn't sure. Nothing wrong with skinny jeans, either, it was the color that was the problem. Maybe try a different color next time you purchase skinny jeans. That's probably why none of the shoes you've tried have been flattering, in all honesty, the color of the jeans. If a woman, on a date with me, were to wear what you described with black jeans...she would look so awesome.

Thanks all! Ok, I am feeling clearer about this.

I'll experiment with "scrunching" my skinnies as you suggest, smittie. La Ped, those are really helpful thoughts about juxtaposition. I know just what you mean. I'm really drawn to the idea of something vintage-y, especially a heeled oxford. I do have a pair of black ankle boots that I really like -- they are sleek and polished, but have a strap that is sort-of-riding-boot-sort-of-moto-boot if that makes sense. It alludes to moto-boot-ness. I'd love to be able to make those work. JAileen yeah, I like the idea of a metallic! Not with bootcuts for now though because I don't have any. Jane I'll look for shootie possibilities too.

Jenni NZ, thanks, those are helpful visuals. It looks to me like the jeans you are talking about are probably straight-leg jeans if they can rest on the outside of the bootie. I totally take your point about agonizing over shoes only for them to be invisible most of the night. It's so true. The interesting thing was that my internal response to your comment was, "Yeah, but it's not about how I look so much as how I feel!" Good thing for me to keep in mind about my motivations for this project.

Ok, I may try to do a little outfit lab later this week. And I'll poke around Zappos a bit and see what I can find in line with the suggestions in this thread. This isn't a nut I expect to crack in a day (but it's okay, I likely won't even have another evening out until mid-February, lol) but it's good to get some ideas to start turning over in my mind.

I think I'm talking stylish Kiwis? Most of them I see out and about are well younger than me, I'm talking 20s/30s/40s not 50s like me. I think the jeans just sit at sort of ankle crease level, where the top of the foot begins? The jeans are not tucked in. I have no examples of me in actual skinny jeans, but in skinny pants/ponte pants/leggings? Pic 1 is my tall best friend and I after dinner in what happened to be matching leather-front ponte leggings. That was a girls' night and date night in one as we each had our DH there- the dinners are often like a girls night and guys night in one as the two men talk their things and we talk our things. Pics 2-5 are where I mean other's jeans might sit?
And I was by no means suggesting the shoes were not important just that one can agonise about them and then they're not seen most of the night.

I think it's totally fine to "close the gap" so to speak between booties and skinny jeans. If the booties are very short, like right at the ankle bone, it will look a bit odd in most cases to have the jeans tucked in. But if you go with just a slightly higher shaft -- like the ones kkards shows -- then you can tuck to your heart's content.

As soon as you mentioned vintage jewelry, my thoughts went straight to chunkier low-shaft boots, either a western style or a moto/harness style, because I love juxtaposition. In the opposite direction, I love the idea of a heeled oxford, mary-jane, or t-strap pump to add a vintage vibe and maybe create a signature style when paired with your accessories.

You can wear booties and skinny jeans. The skinnies can be scrunched a little or you can roll them up to meet the top of the bootie. You can wear thin socks with the booties.

You could try sock boots with your skinnies and long as they’re not too high. I think even with the sock booties, you’d want to roll or scrunch your pants.

Nude knee highs seem unsexy to me too, but people only see the little tiny bit near your foot.

With kkards’ examples, some of the boots have a wider shaft, which means you can tuck the skinny jean into them. For tighter shaft booties, you’d want to roll them up.

Thank you all for the excellent suggestions! And I am so glad many of you "get" the appeal of the silky cami + soft cardi/sweater combo. I will forge ahead with confidence when it comes to the top half. :-)

Re: bottoms, OK, I think maybe I should have specified more in my original post. I am specifically hoping to wear skinny jeans with this formula. All of my jeans right now are skinnies. I am open to adding another style, like a straight-leg or slim boyfriend cut, but I'm soooo burned out on the search right now (buy-return, buy-return, buy-return, buy-wear twice-discard, etc.), I'm hoping to figure out something that will work with the jeans currently in my closet. So, Janet, that's why not a straight-leg or bootcut with pointy-toe booties...I just don't have any. :-(

So Jessikams and others who mentioned sock booties...do you wear those with skinny jeans? Over the jeans or under the jeans?

And, JenniNZ, are these stylish Kiwis in their full-length jeans and ankle boots wearing skinny jeans? If so do they just tuck the jeans into the boots? I thought that was a no-no. My skinny jeans won't stay tucked into my ankle boots anyhow -- the boot shafts are too short and narrow. Maybe I need a slightly higher shaft bootie, like kkards suggests? But I'm still not sure how those are supposed to play with skinny jeans, except for the rolled/cuffed option.

Gretchen yes, I think you're right about color and/or pattern being a good bet. So, Well Dressed Guy, I don't think I'm looking for a "basic black" flat, as it turns out. I really like the idea of a metallic, like Molly Mac and several others mentioned. That feels festive/dressy/special, and could serve as a pseudo-neutral so they could easily go with multiple top/sweater combinations.

So, thinking about the shootie (omg Bijou I love those ones you linked to...a not-too-high heeled oxford in a interesting color/pattern/texture could be a great bet) / loafer / flats options. What do you all do about hosiery? I have to admit that nude knee-highs feel deeply unsexy to me. Perhaps in part because they inevitably fall down! Maybe shorter nude hosiery would be a better bet? Or like a fishnet anklet? But those wouldn't provide much warmth. You see the conundrum...

Really it's just winter that's hard! Once I can ditch the big coat, ballet flats are just fine with the rest of the formula. And in summer I can do sundress/cropped cardi/wedge sandals or ballet flats -- easy!

Apologies to those I have not mentioned by name -- please do not think your comments were less helpful! I'm just trying to capture/interpret the gestalt of the discussion without an even longer monster of a post...
