Your coat collection is fantastic Janet! The only one that seems maybe not quite perfect is #3 to me. #1 is especially fab for a change of pace from dark colors and #8 is just wow on you with the blue and black combo.

Of course I'm biass & love the Pendleton. Agree with others about getting rid of the tipped jacket. It's Atlantic-Pacific, basically not you.

What a beautiful coat collection, Janet. I agree with everyone else to it is tame to let go of the #3. We are (almost) twins with two coats: I have the same J. Crew turquoise peacoat and extremely similar TT black military coat (mine is from this season). I quite like your dark burgundy coat and see no reason to get rid of it. I am actually wishing of a coat that length right now.

For a long time pre-YLF, I defaulted to short coats and jackets because they were typically easier to fit on my body (being a size larger on the bottom half, and short in the torso but not a petite, makes dresses and coats a difficult fit). I also wore bootcut pants and jeans exclusively, which looked fine with short toppers. The fact that I wear more varied silhouettes now seems to require more coats!

Wow, you've got an enviable coat wardrobe here. They all look fantastic on you. I agree with your decision to let 3 go.
You might keep an eye out for a longer coat, especially if you have dresses or longer toppers (vests, sweaters, tunics, etc.) that make you want a longer coat sometimes. I think they are super hard to find.

Your coats are gorgeous. Concurring with everyone else that #3 can go and you should keep the rest. Keep the burgundy until you find your new longer coat. Meanwhile, how fantastic that you have options in fit and colour. My favourites are 4, 6, 7, and 8.

Great feedback, all! It was a productive exercise -- three coats going out the door.

I'm mostly happy with the rest. I am maybe a little tired of the burgundy one (#2). It's probably my oldest coat -- I've had it for probably close to a decade. I would consider jettisoning that one if I found another longer, dressier coat, although I don't want a coat that's so dressy that I only wear it a couple of times a year. Good food for thought.

The military-ish one and the turquoise are my favorites. But I can see how the cocoon silhouette is necessary sometimes. I don't love the Pendleton, but neither do I hate it. I agree on passing on the tipped white coat.

I like the Pendleton on you! All of them actually except #3 as it feels a tad too intentional in trendiness at the time and not enough classic in design. I am more drawn to you in longer coats. You rock color! Esp because your hair is dark and longish.

Kind of jealous of your coat collection. I like in Texas, where there isn't much need for super-warm outerwear. Of course, I've lived in the south all my life, so I need a freaking parka if it dips much below 70F LOL

Love the burgundy, love the Trina Turk (I find her stuff to be very wearable if that makes sense). Drooling over the Pendleton.

I'm gonna agree that #3 might could go. To me, it feels like it references the 80s but I don't remember much of the 80s so I could be wrong LOL. I like #1 better for a light color overcoat

You know best which coats serve you best. I would part with 3. If you want to cull more, 2 and 6 seem to fill similar roles of being dark coats but a change from black. Maybe you would like a puffer coat. I really like the cream coat (#1) on you. You could give it a less conservative look with boots, scarves or even wear a furry or leather-look vest or scarf over it. Or maybe a silver or cream belt over it?
ETA: a shame about the alpaca coat. Would it be worth asking a tailor to make it into a robe for leisure on cold days? Could holes be darned and covered with something artistic...embroidery or applicay?

I say pass along #3 as the fit is not the best. In my book, "Constricting" equals "Will not be worn". The other coats are lovely on you. I really do have a fondness for the lightness/brightness of #1 and #4. Everything seems to be a sea of black and gray this time of year. So nice to have other options. And yes -- you should definitely get yourself a fab new long coat. You live in a 4 season climate. A long coat might be practical.

Very interesting point about my lack of a long, dramatic coat!

I remembered that I own such a thing, but it's very old and was given to me by a friend because it didn't fit her. Well, I pulled it out of storage and realized it doesn't fit me well either. I have not worn it since 2008, and these pics give a good idea why. The sad part is, it is a wool/alpaca coat and now has evidence of moth damage. Into the donate bag it goes.

JAileen, I've been a little unsure of the Pendleton coat, but the main reason I haven't worn it yet is because the weather has not been cold enough. Plus, I've only been back at home for a week now (this coat is definitely too nice to wear at the ranch, and it was way too warm there!).

Hi Janet

I see no need for 3, it is pretty similar to 1 for any occasions you need a shorter light coloured coat.

5 and 7 are my absolute favourites, but I like the fact you have a mix of tailored and relaxed styles here. I think 8 is a great coat too to add interest with plain jeans and black pants on cold days.

If you were looking at an additional one I could see a very luxe evening one, maybe in a cherry or eggplant type colour. Or even a very light silvery grey with a faux fur collar could be fun.

I like all of your coats! I bought #8 too, and have worn it several times. But you haven't cut the tags so maybe that means something? Are you not feeling it or has it just been too warm? I would jettison anything that feels constricting.

It sounds like you're ready to let go of #3, and between #1 and #4 it seems like your light neutral and peacoat bases are covered anyway. As for a longer coat -- I could see adding something statement-y in a knee length or longer. Perhaps you need an elegant wool duster of some sort? Or something with a faux-fur collar? If it were me, I'd need at least one wool coat with a hood and furry trim.

I pulled all my winter coats out today to take a good look at them and see what's getting worn (or not) and why. If any of you would be so inclined to help give an outside perspective, I'd appreciate it.

1. Cream BR coat bought at consignment a few years ago. Infrequently worn, and perhaps a little conservative for me, but I like the fit and it's nice to have a light option in my sea of mostly dark coats.

2. Dark burgundy Laundry coat from year ago. Still in good shape and fits well. Used to be a workhorse but still worn occasionally when I need the length and don't want to wear a black coat.

3. Cream and navy short, tipped pea coat from JCrew. Bought a few years ago when I was a little smaller and now seems a little skimpy to me. It's in very good shape but not worn often. It feels a little constricting even with just a light sweater underneath.

4. Turquoise JCrew pea coat from JCrew. I still love this. Not an everyday coat but a welcome shot of color.

5. Grey/black houndstooth Kenzie coat. Still love this. It's not terribly warm but I can layer a little under it so it works for me.

6. New last year. Dark forest green Madewell cocoon coat. I love this and it's been handy for layering underneath. This was a game changer coat for me.

7. Black Trina Turk military-ish coat. From maybe 3 years ago and a winter workhorse.

8. New blue plaid Pendleton coat from this year's NAS. Tags still on. I love the color. Looks a little A-line from the front but cocoon-ish from the side. It's quite roomy but I was reassured by Anna and Angie in Seattle that it does not look overly big.

I've already culled one old coat -- a fleece-soft wool in purple that now seems a little too small and has gotten a little worn out. It was cheap so no big loss.

One thing I'm realizing is that my preference has shifted over the last few years from shorter coats to longer ones. I also don't need ultra-warm or heavy coats -- I'm usually happy to layer under them rather than wear one big heavy layer.

I'd kind of like a little more rich vibrant color in my coats -- even the burgundy and deep green are very dark. But I am happy with most of these.

What do you think? Time to sell #3? Is everything else looking ok? Can I justify another longer coat? ;-)

ETA: I want to clarify that these are all my coats that solely function as outerwear. I have quite a few jackets that I sometimes wear as outfit toppers and sometimes as outerwear. The fact that I have many pieces that function both ways usually keeps me from justifying another coat-coat, if you get what I mean.
